Racial and ethnic disparities in insufficient sleep among US in infants and preschoolers.

OBJECTIVE: To examine racial and ethnic disparities and associated factors of insufficient sleep among children from infancy to preschool-aged. METHODS: We analyzed parent-reported data on US children ages 4 months-5 years (n = 13,975) from the 2018 and 2019 National Survey of Children's Health. Children who slept less than the age-specific minimum hours recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine were classified as having insufficient sleep. Logistic regression was used to estimate unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (AOR). RESULTS: An estimated 34.3% of children from infancy to p

Addressing the critical palliative care gaps in ethnic minority regions of low- and middle-income countries: a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is an important approach to relieving suffering and improving quality of life for people living with serious illness. Yet its development remains challenging in many low- and middle-income countries, particularly among vulnerable populations such as ethnic minorities. In ethnic minority regions of China, the palliative care implementation is shaped by distinctive social-cultural and practical realities. This study aims to systematically develop the major barriers and to generate actionable recommendations to policymakers to facilitate the advancement and implementat

Representation of racial and ethnic minorities in U.S. depression trials comparing psychotherapy vs. controls: A meta-analysis using state population benchmarks.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotherapies for depression are effective. To generalize to the diverse U.S. population, clinical trials must adequately represent racial/ethnic minority groups. Prior reviews of diversity of clinical trial participants are limited by incomplete reporting of race/ethnicity, use of national rather than state-level comparators, and pooling practices where a few diverse trials skew estimates. METHODS: We evaluated racial/ethnic representation in U.S. randomized trials comparing psychotherapy with an inactive control in depressed adults using meta-analysis with state-specific pop

"Coming Out" of Prison: An Exploratory Study of LGBT Elders in the Criminal Justice System.

This two-phase qualitative study explores the experiences of 10 formerly incarcerated LGBT elders' experiences prior to, during, and after release from prison. A core theme of self and the social mirror emerged from the data that represented LGBT elders ongoing coming-out process of unearthing their "true selves" despite managing multiple stigmatized identities or social locations, such as being LGBT, elderly, HIV positive, formerly incarcerated, and a racial/ethnic minority. These findings further our awareness of an overlooked population of LGBT who are older and involved in the criminal jus

Racial/ethnic differences in alcohol-related suicide: a call for focus on unraveling paradoxes and understanding structural forces that shape alcohol-related health.

A substantial proportion of injuries worldwide are attributable to alcohol consumption, and US estimates indicate that the drinking patterns of racial/ethnic groups vary considerably. The authors reviewed evidence from 19 publications regarding racial/ethnic differences in overall alcohol-attributable injury as well as percent blood alcohol content positivity for injury deaths in the United States. They found that Native Americans evidence higher rates of alcohol-attributable motor vehicle crash fatality, suicide, and falls compared with other racial/ethnic groups; conversely, Asians evidence

A qualitative analysis of barriers to opioid agonist treatment for racial/ethnic minoritized populations.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical guidelines strongly recommend opioid agonist treatment (OAT) as first-line treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, racial/ethnic minoritized patients are less likely to receive OAT compared to non-Hispanic White patients. Reasons for this treatment gap must be elucidated to address racial/ethnic disparities in OAT. Our objective is to evaluate perceptions of and barriers to OAT across racial/ethnic groups in individuals with OUD (not on OAT). METHODS: This qualitative study used semi-structured telephone interviews of adult patients (n = 41) with OUD (not curr

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Management and Outcomes of Acute Myocardial Infarction Complicated by Ventricular Arrhythmias.

Background: Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) represent a high-risk complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Racial and ethnic disparities in the management and in-hospital outcomes of AMI with VAs remain incompletely understood. Methods: Using the National Inpatient Sample, we conducted a retrospective analysis of hospitalizations in which AMI was complicated by VAs from 2002 to 2022. Hospitalizations were stratified by race/ethnicity including White, Black, Hispanic, and other racial/ethnic groups. Baseline characteristics and in-hos

Assessing racial disparities in healthcare expenditure using generalized propensity score weighting.

PURPOSE: This paper extends current propensity score weighting methods for causal inference to better understand disparities in healthcare access across multiple racial groups. By treating each racial group as a distinct entity (or "treatment") in the causal inference framework, we can assess and evaluate heterogeneity in healthcare outcomes across various racial or ethnic categories. Furthermore, we leverage modern propensity score weighting techniques to address the challenges inherent to multiple group evaluations, such as violations of the positivity assumption, and compare the performance…

Racial/Ethnic Differences in Bone Mineral Density for Osteoporosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We primarily aim to review differences in bone mineral density (BMD) for osteoporosis among different racial/ethnic groups and to highlight the magnitude of racial/ethnic differences in obesity and diabetes. We also explore the factors contributing to the BMD differences among various subgroups. In addition, we investigate the existing disparities in research, educational initiatives, screening practices, and treatment options for osteoporosis and discuss these findings' clinical and public health implications. RECENT FINDINGS: Racial/ethnic differences in BMD for osteoporo

Heterogeneous associations of socioeconomic status with metabolic disease in racial and ethnic subgroups in the United States: A cross-sectional cohort study in NHANES and All Of Us.

BACKGROUND: Unfavorable socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with adverse health outcomes and is believed to at least partially mediate racial and ethnic health disparities such that some clinical risk algorithms now incorporate SES measures. However, whether the associations of improved SES with improved health are uniform across US racial and ethnic subpopulations is unknown. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Among adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018 and the All of Us cohort v7, we used logistic regression to examine the association between SES measu

Racial differences in cardiovascular events and adverse pregnancy outcomes among pregnant individuals with SLE.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterise differences in the occurrence of maternal cardiovascular events (CVEs) and adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) in each of four racial/ethnic groups compared with non-Hispanic white women with SLE and to evaluate whether the relationship between CVEs and APOs differed across or within racial/ethnic groups. METHODS: Using a California population-based birth cohort (2005-2020), we identified pregnant individuals with SLE via International Classification of Diseases codes from maternal discharge records. Self-reported racial/ethnic groups were categorised as Asia

Dugald Stewart and Racial Theory in the Late Scottish Enlightenment.

This article recovers the racial theory that Dugald Stewart taught as Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh from 1785 until 1810. In the third, political, segment of his lecture course Stewart presented various racial theories and offered his own opinion that non-European races were not naturally inferior to Europeans. Slavery, he concluded, was therefore unnatural in all its forms. However, though he believed all races were equally perfectible, Stewart nevertheless presented a picture of the world's peoples arranged along a civilizational scale with "civilised" white Eu

Author diversity in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior 1958-2025.

We used application programming interfaces (APIs) to estimate gender and race/ethnicity based on names of first and last authors in 4,833 articles published in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB) from 1958 to 2025. From the first to the most recent 5-year interval, Gender API estimated that the percentage of articles with women first authors increased from 6% to 33% and the percentage of first authors Ethnicolr API classified as more likely than not to be authors of color (AOC) increased from 5% to 25%, with similar gains in percentages of last authors estimated to be w

Osteoporosis Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Management Across Race and Ethnicity in the United States.

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease of reduced bone strength that leads to an increased risk of fragility fracture. Osteoporosis epidemiology, diagnosis, and management all are influenced by race and ethnicity. Studies have found approximately 40% to 50% lower fracture rates in Black and Asian as compared to White women. Hispanic women have generally been shown to have lower fracture rates than White women, but the magnitude of difference is uncertain. Studies in men are fewer. Substantial differences in bone density and structure contribute to these differences in fracture rates. The
