The North Carolina Life (NC Life, R01DA056264, MPI: O'Shea and Taggart) study is a 20-year follow-up to a groundbreaking adolescent study (R01DA013459, PI: Ennett), which examined the health behaviors of over 8,000 racially diverse adolescents in rural North Carolina communities during the early 2000s. This extension study aimed to leverage the initial R01 NIH investment by investigating health trajectories from adolescence through emerging adulthood, with a particular focus on how exposure to neighborhood-, health system-, social network-, and school-level structural racism influences these p…

INTRODUCTION: Literature indicates that racism, sexism, homophobia and HIV-related stigma have adverse impacts on health, well-being, and quality of life among HIV-positive women of African descent (African/Black diaspora). However, limited evidence exists on the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing stigma tailored for these women. This study systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomized observational and quasi-experimental studies evaluating the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing stigma experienced by this population.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We summarize the recent literature investigating exposure to four nonchemical stressors (financial stress, racism, psychosocial stress, and trauma) and DNA methylation, miRNA expression, and mRNA expression. We also highlight the relationships between these epigenetic changes and six critical perinatal outcomes (preterm birth, low birth weight, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, childhood allergic disease, and childhood neurocognition).
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple studies have found financial stress, psychosocial stress, and trauma to be associated with DNA methylation and/o…

BACKGROUND: Food and nutrition are shaped by power structures that perpetuate historical injustices. In marginalized and low-income contexts, racial, gender, and class inequities restrict access to adequate and culturally appropriate food, with serious public health impacts. These disparities are reinforced by colonial legacies, institutional racism, gender oppression, and neoliberal policies that commodify nourishment and erase traditional knowledge. This study examines how these intersecting oppressions shape global nutrition inequities and proposes transformative, justice-oriented approache…

PURPOSE: In this review, we examine the intersection of cardiovascular disease (CVD), race/ethnicity, and homelessness/unstable housing-a key social determinant of cardiovascular health. Homelessness has deep roots reflecting structural racism in housing, educational, and economic policies, leading to disproportional representation of Black, Native American, and Hispanic people among the U.S. homeless population.
RECENT FINDINGS: Increasingly rigorous observational studies detail the disproportionate incidence, prevalence, and mortality of CVD among people experiencing homelessness. Studies o…

Following the atomic bomb attacks on Japan in 1945, scientists from the United States and Japan joined together to study the Hibakusha - the bomb affected people in what was advertised as a bipartisan and cooperative effort. In reality, despite the best efforts of some very dedicated and earnest scientists, the early years of the collaboration were characterized by political friction, censorship, controversy, tension, hostility, and racism. The 70-year history, scientific output and cultural impact of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission and the Radiation Effects Research Foundation are describ…

Racial and ethnic inequities in paediatric care have received increased research attention over the past two decades, particularly in the past 5 years, alongside an increased societal focus on racism. In this Series paper, the first in a two-part Series focused on racism and child health in the USA, we summarise evidence on racial and ethnic inequities in the quality of paediatric care. We review studies published between Jan 1, 2017 and July 31, 2022, that are adjusted for or stratified by insurance status to account for group differences in access, and we exclude studies in which differences…
