[Occupational risk related to natural optical radiation exposure and skin cancers].

Skin tumors are the most frequent neoplasms worldwide in Caucasian subjects, and UV exposure is one of the most relevant risk factors in their etiology. Cumulative UV exposure is strongly associated with an increased occurrence of both basal and squamous cell carcinomas (i.e. Non melanoma skin cancers - NMSC), while for malignant melanoma the role of UV radiation as risk factors seems more related to intermittent and intense exposures, able to induce repeated sunburns, at young ages. Considering the occupational risk, currently UV radiation, part of the solar radiation (SR) spectrum, is one of

Ionizing Radiation Exposure During Pregnancy: Effects on Postnatal Development and Life.

Reliable human data on the effects of prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation are largely based on high-dose exposures. Exposure to low dose … ment: pre-implantation, organogenesis and fetal development. Overall, long-term effects of prenatal radiation exposure (including the possible role on the developmental programing of disease) are important factors to consider when assessing radiation risk, since these effects are of relevance even in the low-dose range.

Maternal occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and major structural birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation (IR) is known to be carcinogenic and mutagenic, but little is known about the association between maternal occupational exposure to IR and birth defects. METHODS: We studied 38,009 mothers who participated in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study and delivered between 1997 and 2009. We assessed odds ratios [ORs] for the association between maternal occupations with potential exposure to IR and 39 birth defects. RESULTS: We observed significant odds ratios (ORs) for isolated hydrocephaly (adjusted OR [AOR], 2.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-4.2), isol

Evaluating the Radiation From Accidental Exposure During a Nondestructive Testing Event.

Industrial radiography is a common nondestructive testing (NDT) method used in various industries. An investigation was conducted for a 1999 incident in Taiwan where two workers (Operators A and B) were accidently exposed to an unshielded Ir source while conducting industrial radiography. Operators A and B experienced acute close-range radiation exposure to a source of Ir for 3 h at a strength of 2.33 × 10 Bq. The health of mammary glands, bone marrow, thyroid glands, eyes, and genital organs of these two workers after radiation exposure was examined. Subsequently, Operator A experienced sever…

Nanosensor dosimetry of mouse blood proteins after exposure to ionizing radiation.

Giant magnetoresistive (GMR) nanosensors provide a novel approach for measuring protein concentrations in blood for medical diagnosis. Using an in vivo mouse radiation model, we developed protocols for measuring Flt3 ligand (Flt3lg) and serum amyloid A1 (Saa1) in small amounts of blood collected during the first week after X-ray exposures of sham, 0.1, 1, 2, 3, or 6 Gy. Flt3lg concentrations showed excellent dose discrimination at ≥ 1 Gy in the time window of 1 to 7 days after exposure except 1 Gy at day 7. Saa1 dose response was limited to the first two days after exposure. A multiplex assay

Patient exposure to ionising radiation due to nuclear medicine cardiac procedures.

Nuclear cardiology procedures are among the most extensively performed radionuclide studies. Procedures for the assessment of myocardial perfusion, contractile function and metabolism have gained a prominent position in clinical practice. Health risk to patients from radiopharmaceuticals results only from exposure to ionizing radiation. Nuclear medicine diagnostic procedures, including the cardiological ones, are accompanied by a very small risk of radiation induced malignant tumours. Death risk from stress and rest perfusion of myocardium (effective dose of about 10 mSv) could be estimated as

Childhood exposure to ultraviolet radiation and harmful skin effects: epidemiological evidence.

We review the general amount and patterns of exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation that children and teenagers experience and the spectrum of UV-related skin damage that can occur as a result. Data about the amount of solar UV received by children and teenagers are relatively few but suggest that around 40-50% of total UV to age 60 occurs before age 20. Among white children, those with the palest complexions suffer the most damage. Comparisons of prevalence and incidence of outcomes in children and teenagers sharing common ancestry, but living at different latitudes, show that prevalenc

Exercise-induced protection of bone marrow cells following exposure to radiation.

The hormetic effects of exercise training have previously been shown to enhance cellular protection against oxidative stress. Therefore, adaptations to exercise training may attenuate the harmful effects of radiation induced by oxidative stress. Flow cytometric analysis of genotoxicity (γH2AX foci and micronucleated reticulocytes (MN-RET)) and cytotoxicity (apoptosis and percentage of reticulocytes) were conducted on bone marrow cells isolated from acutely exercised (Acute EX), exercise-trained (EX), and sedentary (SED) mice following 1 and 2 Gy radiation challenges in vitro. Acute EX increase

MicroRNA dysregulation in human thyroid cells following exposure to ionizing radiation.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation is a well-known mutagen and a risk factor for thyroid cancer. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in the regulation of gene expression on post-transcriptional level and are dysregulated in thyroid cancer. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of acute exposure to 1 and 10 Gy of γ-irradiation on miRNA expression in normal human thyroid cells. METHODS: Expression of 319 miRNAs was studied in primary cultures of normal human thyroid cells 4 and 24 hours postirradiation using a miRNA expression array with further confirmation of miRNAs expressi

[Cancer incidence and mortality after low-dose radiation exposure: epidemiological aspects].

Current recommendations for limiting exposure to ionizing radiation are based on the linear-no-threshold (LNT) model for radiation carcinogenesis under which every dose, no matter how low, carries with it some cancer risk. In this review, epidemiological evidences are discussed that the LNT hypothesis is incorrect at low doses. A large set of data was accumulated that showed that cancer risk after ordinarily encountered radiation exposure (natural background radiation, medical X-rays, etc.) is much lower than projections based on the LNT model. The discovery of the low-level radiation hormesis…

[Early leukemia effect during chronic exposure to radiation with high doses].

The preliminary results of the analysis of leukemia morbidity in the sub-cohort of workers from PA "Mayak" exposed with high (more than 4Gy) doses during relatively short time range (few years) have been obtained in terms of materials from the medical-dosimetry register (SUrIBPh). The earlier dynamics of the leukemia morbidity implementation (2-5 years after the beginning of exposure) was established for this sub-cohort, in contrast to that predicted on the base of examination of the cohort of atomic bombardment victims from Japan cities (LSS). The "'early" leukemia effect is connected with in

Radiation exposure to operating theatre personnel during fluoroscopic-assisted orthopaedic surgery.

Orthopaedic procedures especially dynamic hip screw (DHS) fixation, interlocking nailing (ILN) of the tibia and femur require fluoroscopic a … f tibial ILN, ten cases of DHS and six cases of femur ILN respectively. The surgeon has the highest radiation exposure than other theatre personnel and the whole body exposure for DHS was higher than that of for ILN. However, the estimated cumulative dose was still far below the permissible annual dose limit.
