Transmission in fractionated monosynaptic spinal reflex systems.

A study has been made of conditions that support monosynaptic reflex transmission from afferent fibers of one part of a synergic muscle mass to motoneurons of another part. Heteronymous response so called can be brought on by prior tetanization of the afferent pathway and by asphyxiation to a critical stage. The response is facilitated by cooling and may appear in the cold preparation without need for prior tetanization. By appropriate asymmetrical subdivision of a monosynaptic reflex system an afferent inflow can be obtained that is sufficiently powerful to secure heteronymous transmission wi…

Enhancement of carotid chemoreceptor reflex and cardiac chemosensitive reflex in the acute phase of myocardial infarction of the anesthetized rabbit.

In the acute phase of cardiac ischemia there is an imbalance of the autonomic outflow with a depression of the baroreceptor reflex. Carotid chemoreceptor stimulation evokes an increase on arterial blood pressure and bradycardia in the anesthetized and paralyzed animal. The activation of cardiac chemosensitive fibers elicit the Bezold-Jarisch reflex comprising a decrease of arterial blood pressure and bradycardia. In the present study, we studied the modifications of the carotid chemoreceptor reflex and the Bezold-Jarisch reflex elicited during the acute phase of myocardial infarction (MI) in t…

Diagnostic potential of acoustic startle reflex, acoustic blink reflex, and electro-oculography in progressive supranuclear palsy: a prospective study.

We carried out a prospective study to analyze the diagnostic potential of acoustic startle reflex (ASR), acoustic blink reflex (ABR) and electro-oculography (EOG) in early stages of atypical parkinsonian syndrome. The study was carried out in a consecutive series of 41 patients clinically diagnosed as atypical parkinsonism (mean time from first symptoms of 38 months and follow-up of 26 months). The three procedures were carried out immediately after the first clinical evaluation. ASR and ABR were elicited by auditory stimuli while the patient was attending to a simple reaction time task. Outco…

Is Reflex Parotitis a Forgotten or an Unknown Pathology?

Reflex parotitis is a recurrent parotid inflammation caused by an imbalance in the parasympathetic innervation of the salivary gland. However, due to a poor understanding of its pathophysiology, it can go unnoticed. Causes of ignored norms can trigger these repetitive episodes of glandular disease with a difficult diagnosis and inadequate treatment.

Manipulation of the inflammatory reflex as a therapeutic strategy.

The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway is the efferent arm of the inflammatory reflex, a neural circuit through which the CNS can modulate peripheral immune responses. Signals communicated via the vagus and splenic nerves use acetylcholine, produced by Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)+ T cells, to downregulate the inflammatory actions of macrophages expressing α7 nicotinic receptors. Pre-clinical studies using transgenic animals, cholinergic agonists, vagotomy, and vagus nerve stimulation have demonstrated this pathway's role and therapeutic potential in numerous inflammatory diseases. In t…
