Effects of pre- and postnatal protein malnutrition in hypoxic-ischemic rats.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HI) is a major cause of nervous system damage and neurological morbidity. Perinatal malnutrition affects morphological, biochemical and behavioral aspects of neural development, including pathophysiological cascades of cell death triggered by ischemic events, so modifying resulting brain damage. Female Wistar rats were subjected to protein restriction during pregnancy and lactation (control group: 25% soybean protein; malnourished group: 7%). Seven days after delivery (PND7), their offspring were submitted to unilateral cerebral HI; rats were then test

A mouse model of human repetitive mild traumatic brain injury.

A novel method for the study of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) that models the most common form of head injury in humans is presented. Existing animal models of TBI impart focal, severe damage unlike that seen in repeated and mild concussive injuries, and few are configured for repetitive application. Our model is a modification of the Marmarou weight drop method and allows repeated head impacts to lightly anesthetized mice. A key facet of this method is the delivery of an impact to the cranium of an unrestrained subject allowing rapid acceleration of the free-moving head and t

Palmitoylethanolamide modulates pentobarbital-evoked hypnotic effect in mice: involvement of allopregnanolone biosynthesis.

Palmitoylethanolamde (PEA) is an endogenous lipid neuromodulator that mediates a broad spectrum of pharmacological effects by activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha). Detectable or high levels of PEA in the CNS have been found, but the specific function of this lipid remains to be clarified. Here we report evidence that PEA, activating PPAR-alpha receptor and involving neurosteroids de novo synthesis, modulates pentobarbital-evoked hypnotic effect. A single i.c.v. administration of PEA (1-5microg) increases pentobarbital induced loss of righting reflex (LORR

Erythropoietin promotes neuronal replacement through revascularization and neurogenesis after neonatal hypoxia/ischemia in rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Erythropoietin (EPO) has been well characterized and shown to improve functional outcomes after ischemic injury, but EPO may also have unexplored effects on neurovascular remodeling and neuronal replacement in the neonatal ischemic brain. The current study investigates the effects of exogenous administration of EPO on revascularization and neurogenesis, 2 major events thought to contribute to neuronal replacement, in the neonatal brain after hypoxia/ischemia (H/I). METHODS: Seven-day-old rat pups were treated with recombinant human EPO or vehicle 20 minutes after H/I a

Aniracetam reversed learning and memory deficits following prenatal ethanol exposure by modulating functions of synaptic AMPA receptors.

Specific pharmacological treatments are currently not available to address problems resulting from fetal ethanol exposure, described as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). The present study evaluated the therapeutic effects of aniracetam against cognitive deficits in a well-characterized and sensitive FASD Sprague-Dawley rat model. Ethanol, administered orally at a moderate dose (4 g/kg/24 h; 38% v/v) during the entire course of pregnancy, caused severe cognitive deficits in offspring. Furthermore, both progeny genders were affected by a spectrum of behavioral ab

Potentiation of morphine antinociception by pentobarbital in female vs. male rats.

It has been shown previously that female rats are more sensitive than males to barbiturate anesthesia, whereas males may be more sensitive than females to opioid antinociception. The aim of the present study was to determine whether enhancement of morphine antinociception by pentobarbital, previously demonstrated in male animals and humans, occurs similarly in females. Pentobarbital (50 mg/kg i.p.) produced longer-lasting anesthetic effects (loss of muscle tone, righting reflex) in gonadally intact female rats than in males, but greater antinociceptive effects in males at some time points post

Interaction between thiopental and fentanyl in mice is different between hypnotic and lethal doses.

Much is known about the interaction of intravenous anesthetics and opioids at the therapeutic level, but less is known regarding their combined lethal effect, leaving some uncertainty regarding the window of safety for their clinical use. We set out to document the type of interaction between thiopental and fentanyl for both the hypnotic effect (loss of righting reflex) and lethal effect in mice. Hypnotic and lethal dose-response curves were constructed for thiopenthal alone and in combination with fentanyl (0.8 microg/kg, each based on five to seven subgroups of six to ten ICR mice. The dose

Increased neuronal cell survival after L-deprenyl treatment in experimental thiamine deficiency.

Experimental thiamine deficiency results in a reproducible pattern of selective neuronal cell death. Events such as blood-brain barrier breakdown, N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor-mediated excitotoxicity, and increased reactive oxygen species have been implicated in thiamine deficiency-induced neural loss. L-deprenyl protects dopaminergic, noradrenergic, and acetylcholinergic neurons from neurotoxic, mechanical, and excitotoxic damage. In the present study, the effects of l-deprenyl on neuronal cell survival were examined in rats made thiamine deficient by daily administration of the c

Sedative and hypnotic midazolam-morphine interactions in rats.

The midazolam-morphine interactions in relation to the sedative effect and in relation to the hypnotic effect were studied in rats. Two series of experiments (sedative and hypnotic) were performed. In the sedative series, doses that inhibited locomotor activity to 10% or more of the control level were determined when the agents were given singly or in combination. Dose-response curves were determined with a probit procedure. The ED50 values of both agents and their combination were compared with algebraic (fractional) and isobolographic analyses in one subseries of experiments. The effect of a

[Electrophysiological study of a case of clinically diagnosed corticobasal degeneration with rhythmic myoclonus].

A 66-year-old man with clinically diagnosed corticobasal degeneration was studied electrophysiologically. The patient had bilateral forced grasping, rigidity, bradykinesia and hyperreflexia which were predominant on the right side, motor aphasia, constructional apraxia, forced laughing, dysequilibrium and myoclonus of the right upper extremity. Several anti-parkinsonism drugs were ineffective. Brain MRI revealed cortical atrophy of the fronto-temporo-parietal lobes with left predominance. On single photon emission computed tomography, cerebral blood perfusion was decreased, especially on the l

Changes in intra- and interlimb reflexes from forelimb cutaneous afferents after staggered thoracic lateral hemisections during locomotion in cats.

In quadrupeds, such as cats, cutaneous afferents from the forepaw dorsum signal external perturbations and send inputs to spinal circuits to co-ordinate the activity in muscles of all four limbs. How these cutaneous reflex pathways from forelimb afferents are reorganized after an incomplete spinal cord injury is not clear. Using a staggered thoracic lateral hemisections paradigm, we investigated changes in intralimb and interlimb reflex pathways by electrically stimulating the left and right superficial radial nerves in seven adult cats and recording reflex responses in five forelimb and ten h

The elecrophysiological bulbocavernosus reflex test in female dogs: Its technique and applicability.

The intent of the study was to clarify the technique and the application of the electrophysiological bulbocavernosus reflex (EBCR) test in healthy female dogs. For this aim, 15 healthy female dogs were used in the study. The stimulations were made on the clitoris and the responses were recorded from the right side of the external anal sphincter muscle with a concentric needle recording electrode. The EBCR had response latencies between 18.99 and 25.69ms with the mean value of 22.26ms. The EBCR reflex test is not yet widely used for the evaluation of the functional integrity of sacral spinal co

Delayed Recovery of Visual Acuity after Sphenoorbital Meningioma Surgical Removal: Case Report and Review of the Literature. Is Visual Acuity Recovery Possible after an Initial Decline?

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: To report a case of late recovery of visual acuity after surgical removal of a sphenoorbital meningioma (SOM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 42-year-old woman was referred for progressive proptosis of the right eye for 5 years. Her best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 10/10 in her right eye and 10/10 in her left eye, and thyroid function tests were negative. Ophthalmic examination showed slight exophthalmos of her right eye, but eye movements and pupillary light reflexes were normal. Intraocular pressure and fundus examination (FE) in both eyes were normal. Computed t

Sexual orgasm as a trigger for reflex epilepsy.

Reflex epilepsy is a syndrome in which seizures can be elicited by a specific afferent sensory stimulus or an activity undertaken by the patient. Among all reported stimuli, orgasm has rarely been mentioned. We describe a woman presenting with seizures following orgasm. On interictal EEG, no epileptiform activity was found, even during hyperventilation. Brain MRI showed a small cyst next to the right choroid fissure, modulating the superior surface of the right hippocampus. We reviewed all published case reports of reflex epilepsy induced by orgasm in order to compare clinical, electroencephal

Changes in segmental reflexes following chronic spinal cord hemisection in the cat. I. Increased monosynaptic and polysynaptic ventral root discharges.

The effect of a chronic spinal cord hemisection on segmental reflex transmission was studied in cats. Recordings of ventral root responses were made after a terminal transection below the initial lesion to eliminate descending influence through the intact spinal half. Procedures to ensure comparability between sides, that are lacking in earlier work on this experimental model, were introduced in the present work. It was demonstrated that there was an increase in reflex size on the lesioned (left) side, relative to the other side, of both mono- and polysynaptic reflexes. The reflex changes were

Modulation of spinal motor asymmetry by neuroleptic medication of schizophrenia patients.

The effects of chlorpromazine treatment on spinal motor asymmetry was studied in right-handed chronic schizophrenia patients. Spinal motor asymmetry and lower motor neuron excitability were tested by the Hoffmann reflex recovery curve. In drug-free patients, the Hoffmann reflex recovery curve from the left leg was significantly higher than that from the right leg as in the healthy subjects. This spinal motor asymmetry disappeared and even reversed within three weeks of the neuroleptic treatment. The chlorpromazine medication lowered the left recovery curve predominantly, and slightly augmented

[Pheochromocytoma and Recklinghausen's cutaneous neurofibromatosis. Localizing value of abdominal reflexes in a case].

The authors present a case of pheochromocytoma observed in a 49 year old man suffering from the cutaneous form of von Recklinghausen's disease. In this patient, they noted the constant absence of the inferior abdominal cutaneous reflex on the right side, contrasting with the briskness of the other abdominal cutaneous relexes. From this they concluded that the chromaffin tumor was very probably situated in the right adrenal region. This hypothesis was confirmed by retro-pneumoperitoneum, selective arteriography and finally surgical intervention. After having reviewed the essential medical data

Reduction of lower limb spasticity after the suppression of intravesical noxious stimulus documented by gait analysis.

CONTEXT: Spasticity is characterized by muscle hypertonia due to a velocity-dependent increase in tonic stretch reflexes, mostly related to hyperactive spinal reflexes. After spinal cord injury, the impact of noxious stimuli on autonomic dysreflexia is well documented. It is admitted in clinical practice that sublesional noxious stimuli can also increase spasticity. However, this has never been reported in the literature. In this single case study, we describe the impact of a noxious stimulus (bladder stone) on the spasticity of lower limbs in a male with spinal cord injury, using quantitative
