Examining the joint contribution of trauma and adverse neighborhood characteristics to paranoid ideation.

It has been proposed that paranoid ideation may, in part, be a consequence of experiencing trauma and exposure to adverse environments. However, few studies have examined the joint contribution of these factors to paranoid ideation. Additionally, it is unclear if these associations are unique to paranoid ideation or if these factors are more broadly related to increases in symptomatology. In this study, we examined the association between paranoid ideation and other symptom dimensions with individual-level (i.e., personal trauma) and system-level (i.e., neighborhood) factors in a transdiagnost

Health Predictors of Neighborhood Selection: A Prospective Cohort Study of Residential Mobility in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Health selection into neighborhoods describes unhealthy people moving disproportionately to lower-income neighborhoods, producing observable socioeconomic gradients sometimes falsely attributed to neighborhood effects on health. We investigated residential mobility outcomes and their relationship to baseline health using population-level data linkages in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: We included Canadian Community Health Survey respondents ages 25 to 64 between 2005 and 2014 (n = 93,235). We assessed baseline health using self-reported health and multimorbidity. We captured moves usin

Examining Child and Caregiver Perceptions of Environmental Facilitators and Barriers to Healthy Eating and Active Living During the Summer Months in a Neighborhood With a High Hispanic/Latinx Population: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Children from low-income neighborhoods and of Black or Hispanic/Latinx minority groups are at relatively high risk of accelerated unhealthy weight gain during prolonged school break times when children lose access to a structured environment that provides healthy meals and snacks and opportunities for physical activity. OBJECTIVE: To identify child and caregiver perceptions of the neighborhood- and household-level environmental barriers and facilitators to healthy eating and active living during the summer months in low-income neighborhoods with a high percentage of Hispanic/Latin

The Role of Race/Ethnicity on the Association between Neighborhood Deprivation and Breast Cancer Outcomes among Kentucky Patients with Breast Cancer (2010-2022).

BACKGROUND: Kentucky is within the top five leading states for breast cancer mortality nationwide. This study investigates the association between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and breast cancer outcomes, including surgical treatment, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and survival, and how associations vary by race and ethnicity in Kentucky. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis using data from the Kentucky Cancer Registry for patients with breast cancer diagnosed between 2010 and 2017, with follow-up through December 31, 2022. We linked Kentucky Cancer Registry data with

Besides the Drinking in Alcohol's Harm to Others: Potential Economic and Environmental Factors.

OBJECTIVE: This article considers how harm from others' drinking is distributed across several economic and environmental factors. METHOD: Economic, environmental, demographic, and drinking measures include household income, financial disadvantage indicators, and home spaciousness; neighborhood socioeconomic status, connections, and safety; and respondent's gender, age group, and risky drinking status. This article explores the interactions of these factors with harms from the drinking of others in a 2021 survey of 2,574 Australian adults. RESULTS: The home's degree of crowding (persons per

Neighborhood Walkability Is Associated With Global Positioning System-Derived Community Mobility of Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood walkability may encourage greater out-of-home travel (ie, community mobility) to support independent functioning in later life. We examined associations between a novel walkability audit index and Global Positioning System (GPS)-derived community mobility in community-dwelling older adults. We compared associations with the validated Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Walkability Index and further examined moderation by clinical walking speed. METHODS: Participants were 146 older adults (Mean = 77.0 ± 6.5 years, 68% women) at baseline of a randomized trial

Neighborhood Stressors and Epigenetic Age Acceleration Among Older Americans.

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to stressful neighborhood environments is a well-established risk factor for health deterioration and premature death. However, the biological underpinnings are not fully understood. Epigenetic aging may function as a key molecular pathway to adverse health outcomes among residents of high-stress neighborhoods. This study examines the associations between neighborhood social stressors (socioeconomic deprivation, observed and perceived disorder, and low social cohesion) and epigenetic age (DunedinPACE and Principal component adjusted [PC] PCHorvath, PCHannum, PCPhenoAge, PC

Neighborhood-Level Social Determinants of Health and Presenting Characteristics for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachments.

IMPORTANCE: Functional outcomes after repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) are highly dependent on baseline visual acuity and foveal status. Adverse social determinants of health (SDOH) can present barriers to timely presentation for repair and limit vision outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between neighborhood-level SDOH with baseline severity (visual acuity and fovea status) of RRD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a retrospective cohort study that included adult patients 18 years and older who underwent primary repair of uncomplicated RRD at the Wi

Area Deprivation Index and Frailty Among Older People With HIV.

We evaluated the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage (measured by the Area Deprivation Index [ADI]) and frailty. We performed a secondary analysis, pooling cross-sectional data collected from 209 people with HIV (PWH) aged ≥50 years enrolled in studies in Colorado (CO) and Missouri (MO). MO participants (N = 137) had a higher ADI (µ= 70, ơ2 = 25) compared to CO (µ= 32, ơ2 = 15; p < .001). No significant differences in ADI were observed between frailty categories when cohorts were examined either separately or combined; however, when comparing individual frailty criteria, the most ap

Patterns of early childhood adversity and neighborhood deprivation predict unique challenges in adolescence: A UK birth cohort study.

This study applies a comprehensive bioecological perspective to address a significant gap in the childhood adversity literature by employing latent profile analysis to examine the impact of diverse combinations of early childhood adversities and protective factors on adolescent psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. Drawing from the United Kingdom's Millennium Cohort Study (N = 19,444), we identified eight unique profiles of early childhood adversity and protective factors. These profiles provide a nuanced understanding of adversity combinations and allow for differentiation between groups with

Multidimensional structural racism and estimated cancer risk from traffic-related air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollutants have been associated with a variety of adverse human health impacts, including cancers. In the United States, numerous studies have documented racial inequities in neighborhood exposures to traffic-related air pollution. Emerging evidence suggests that structural racism may influence neighborhood exposures to air pollutants. However, existing research has largely focused on residential racial segregation, one indicator of structural racism. This study developed a multidimensional measure of structural racism to examine the relationship between structu

Associations of Household and Neighborhood Contexts and Hair Cortisol Among Mexican-Origin Adolescents From Low-Income Immigrant Families.

Although neighborhood contexts serve as upstream determinants of health, it remains unclear how these contexts "get under the skin" of Mexican-origin youth, who are disproportionately concentrated in highly disadvantaged yet co-ethnic neighborhoods. The current study examines the associations between household and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES), neighborhood racial-ethnic and immigrant composition, and hair cortisol concentration (HCC)-a physiological index of chronic stress response-among Mexican-origin adolescents from low-income immigrant families in the United States. Neighborhood environment and quality of life of older adults in eastern Nepal: findings from a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Quality of life (QoL) is a subjective measure reflecting individuals' evaluations based on their personal goals and values. While global research shows the role of neighborhood factors like ethnic diversity and socio-cultural dynamics on QoL, these are unexplored in the Nepali context. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between neighborhood environment and QoL among Nepali older adults in eastern Nepal. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 847 non-institutionalized older adults (aged ≥ 60 years) from two districts in eastern Nepal. QoL was evaluated using th

Genetic Risk, Neighborhood Characteristics, and Behavioral Difficulties Among African American Adolescents Living in Very Low-Income Neighborhoods.

Behavioral difficulties among African American youth are disproportionately detrimental to their future well-being compared to when demonstrated by White American youth. The majority of gene-environment studies of behavior have been conducted with European ancestry samples, limiting our knowledge of these processes among African Americans. This study examined the influence of positive and negative neighborhood conditions, in the context of genetic risk, on behavioral difficulties among low-income African American adolescents. Data were from the Genes, Environment, and Neighborhood Initiative s

Living alone is associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality: 32 years of follow-up in the Copenhagen Male Study.

AIMS: As a consequence of modern urban life, an increasing number of individuals are living alone. Living alone may have potential adverse health implications. The long-term relationship between living alone and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, however, remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants from The Copenhagen Male Study were included in 1985-86 and information about conventional behavioural, psychosocial, and environmental risk factors were collected. Socioeconomic position (SEP) was categorized into four groups. Multivariable Cox-regression models were performed with fol

Local social environmental factors are associated with household food insecurity in a longitudinal study of children.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is a significant public health problem in North America and elsewhere. The prevalence of food insecurity varies by country of residence; within countries, it is strongly associated with household socioeconomic status, but the local environment may also play an important role. In this study, we analyzed secondary data from a population-based survey conducted in Québec, Canada, to determine if five local environmental factors: material and social deprivation, social cohesion, disorder, and living location were associated with changes in household food insecurity over

Does food planning mediate the association between living arrangements and fruit and vegetable consumption among women aged 40 years and older?

The objective of this paper was to investigate whether food planning strategies mediate the association between living arrangements and fruit and vegetable consumption amongst women aged 40 years and over. A community sample of 473 women aged 40 years and over from metropolitan Melbourne, Australia, provided survey data on their living arrangements, education, fruit and vegetable consumption and the amount of food planning they undertake. Fruit and vegetable consumption was significantly higher amongst women who lived with others compared to those living alone. Food planning was found to media

Individual factors explain neighbourhood variations in accidents to children under 5 years of age.

Previous studies have identified possible neighbourhood-level influences on the risk of injuries to preschool children, but none have had sufficient data at both household and area level to explain these neighbourhood effects. We used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, which recruited over 14,062 children at birth in the former county of Avon, UK, and collected information about accidents, as well as extensive social, health and developmental data throughout the first 5 years of life. This information was combined with census and geographical data in order to identi

Prevalence of hyperimmunization against tetanus in Italians born after the introduction of mandatory vaccination of children with tetanus toxoid in 1968.

Systematic mandatory immunization of children against tetanus was started in Italy in 1968. Prevalence of tetanus hyperimmunization (> 5 IU/ml) was assessed among 214 immune subjects born after 1968 and found to be 17.3%. This figure is significantly higher (p < 0.01) than the 10.8% found in a previous study of subjects born before 1968. This increase is statistically significant in the Center (p < 0.01) and in the South (p < 0.05) of Italy, but not in the North. Hyperimmunization is not associated with family size (odds ratio 2.16; C. I. 95% = 0.5-7.6) or the father's years of education (odds
