Influence of surface treatment and simulated aging on the shear bond strength of different luting agents to zirconia.

BACKGROUND: Zirconia, or stabilized zirconium oxide (ZrO2), is a widely used dental ceramic for full-coverage crowns owing to its favorable biological and esthetic properties. Upon cooling after high-temperature sintering, zirconia undergoes a tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation, which causes volume expansion and brittleness. Adhesive cementation (AC) is crucial for the clinical performance of zirconia restorations, enhancing their retention, marginal adaptation and fracture resistance, thereby contributing to their suitability for dental restorations. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the pre

Retention of teeth with reduced root length through use of a resin-bonded splint: a case report.

Orthodontic relapse and tooth migration are commonly observed in patients with severe postorthodontic root resorption. If conventional removable retention is not adequate, fixed splint retention is necessary. Proponents of flexible splints suggest that the difference in mobility between natural teeth and the rigid systems is responsible for the loss of cement seal in the rigid systems. Proponents of rigid splints suggest that the flexibility that allows physiologic movement of the teeth also contributes to fatigue and subsequent failure of the material in the flexible splint systems. A clinica

Pulpal response to adhesive resin systems applied to acid-etched vital dentin: damp versus dry primer application.

A number of studies have reported that acid etching of dentin is toxic to the cells of the odontoblastic layer and dental pulp. Other studies report that pulpal inflammation is a consequence of bacterial microleakage. The purpose of this study was to observe the degree of pulpal healing after pretreatment of vital dentin prior to placement of All-Bond and Scotch-bond 2 composite resin adhesives. Zinc oxide-eugenol cement and an acidic cement were employed as controls. One hundred twelve Class V nonexposed cavity preparations were placed throughout the dentitions of five healthy adult rhesus mo

In vitro comparison of enamel shear bond strength to four restorative substrates used in resin-bonded prostheses.

The success of resin-bonded restorations relies on durable adhesion to enamel; however, the choice of restorative substrate may affect initial bonding behavior. This in vitro investigation evaluated and compared the micro-shear bond strength (SBS) to human enamel of 4 materials commonly used as substrates for resin-bonded prostheses: polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), cobalt-chromium (CoCr) alloy, zirconia ceramic, and a fiber-reinforced resin composite. Twenty-four extracted third molars with intact enamel surfaces were assigned to 4 groups (n = 6 per material). Standardized specimens measuring 5
