Distribution and structural characterization of neurons giving rise to descending spinal projections in the turtle, Pseudemys scripta elegans.

Descending spinal projections were investigated in the turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans following injections of horseradish peroxidase and/or radioactive wheat germ agglutinin into the spinal cord at various levels. Using various planes of section the cells of origin in the brainstem, cerebellum, and diencephalon were characterized according to their size, dendritic tree, and precise location. Projections to levels as far caudal as the lumbar spinal cord were found to arise from medial and lateral rhombencephalic reticular fields, including the perihypoglossal complex, the nucleus raphe inferi

The origin of the preganglionic parasympathetic fibres to the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands in the rat: a horseradish peroxidase study.

Horseradish peroxidase was applied to a ligation of the chorda tympani nerves running alongside the submandibular duct in order to label the preganglionic parasympathetic salivatory neurons in the brain stem. Labelled neurons were found in the ipsilateral motor trigeminal nucleus, lateral reticular formation and in the facial motor nuclei of both sides. However, the labelling of neurons in the motor nuclei of the trigeminal and facial nucleus was caused by the uptake of horseradish peroxidase by axons in the musculature surrounding the injection site which were probably damaged by the dissecti…

Ultrastructural differentiation of stromal and vascular components in early macaque placental villi.

In this study, closely staged placental villi from rhesus monkeys between 19 and 60 days of gestation were used to examine 1) the origin of endothelial cells and the mechanism of angiogenesis in villi; 2) the origin of placental macrophages (Hofbauer cells), and 3) the origin of the reticular cells that compartmentalize the stroma. The results did not support the concept that early stromal cells in the villi were derived by in situ delamination from cytotrophoblast. The extraembryonic mesodermal (mesenchymal) cells at the earliest of ages examined contained considerable granular ER. These cell

Midlatency auditory evoked responses: differential effects of sleep in the cat.

Middle latency responses (MLRs) in the 10-100 msec latency range, evoked by click stimuli, were studied in 8 adult cats during sleep-wakefulness to determine whether such changes in state were reflected by any MLR component. In particular, we wanted to determine whether the 20-22 msec positivity recorded at the vertex, 'wave A,' shown in previous studies to reflect a generator substrate within the ascending reticular formation, was tightly linked to changes in sleep-wakefulness, as reported for single neurons in the ascending reticular activating system. Evoked potentials were collected in 100…

Interference of dexamethasone in the pulmonary cycle of Strongyloides venezuelensis in rats.

The aim of this study was to investigate the interference of a daily treatment of dexamethasone in the pulmonary cycle of Strongyloides venezuelensis infection in rats. Three principal effects were found: 1) increased alveolar hemorrhagic inflammation provoked by the passage of larvae into alveolar spaces; 2) significant decrease of eosinophil and mast cell migration to the axial septum of the lungs; and 3) impaired formation of the reticular fiber network, interfering with granuloma organization. This study showed that the use of drugs with immunomodulatory actions, such as dexamethasone, in

Lateral gaze disturbance due to cerebral microbleed in the medial lemniscus in the mid-pontine region: a case report.

A 72-year-old man who was attending the outpatients clinic in our hospital because of multiple lacunar cerebral infarctions and mild mental disturbance developed an inability to gaze to the left side voluntarily. MR imaging revealed a new cerebral microbleed in the medial lemniscus of the right side in the mid-pontine region. The finding in this case suggests that the pathways from the frontal eye field descend at least to the level of the mid-pontine region ipsilaterally, and that the pathways then contralaterally decussate and terminate in the paramedian pontine reticular formation. Cerebral…

Audiogenic startle reflex in acute hemiplegia.

The generators of the audiogenic startle reflex (ASR) are located in the bulbopontine reticular formation. We studied the influence of acute vascular supratentorial lesions on ASR. Ten patients with hemiplegia due to hemispheric cerebral infarct were studied within 5 days of stroke onset. ASR and magnetic cortical stimulation were performed the same day. A muscle response to magnetic stimulation was not elicited over the plegic side in any patient. In four of seven patients, ASR was enhanced over the plegic side. We suggest that enhanced ASR is due to the loss of a predominantly inhibitory hem…

Inhibition of N-linked glycosylation prevents inclusion formation by the dystonia-related mutant form of torsinA.

Most cases of early-onset torsion dystonia are associated with a mutation in the DYT1 gene that results in the loss of a glutamic acid residue in the carboxy terminus of the encoded protein, torsinA. When overexpressed in cultured cells, wild-type torsinA distributes diffusely throughout the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), while the dystonia-related mutant, torsinADeltaE, accumulates within multilamellar membrane inclusions. Here we show that inclusion formation requires the addition of an N-linked oligosaccharide to one of two asparagine residues within the ATP-binding domain of the mutant protei

Vertebrobasilar artery insufficiency and electroencephalogram.

This is a renewed diagnostic approach to vertebrobasilar artery insufficiency (VBI)--a condition which stood in the focus of this author's interest several decades ago. The time for a revisitation has come. The EEG findings consist mainly of generally reduced voltage output and enhanced photic driving response. There is also some theta activity over anterior temporal and midtemporal region, but this finding is common in the early stage of all cerebrovascular disorders. Dysfunction of the pontine portion of the ascending reticular formation might be the cause of the lowered voltage output. The …

Vestibular findings and brainstem pathology in two siblings with Cockayne's syndrome.

Two siblings with Cockayne's syndrome (CS) are described. Both showed cachectic dwarfism, photosensitivity and progressive neurological dysfunction. The damped-rotation test revealed no vestibular nystagmus in one of them, and reduced per-rotatory nystagmus in the other. Neuropathological examination in the former subject disclosed neuronal loss with fibrillary gliosis in the vestibular nuclei, whereas neuronal degeneration was not apparent in the abducens nuclei, the oculomotor nuclei and the paramedian pontine reticular formation. Our findings suggest that CS might cause vestibular dysfuncti…

Intractable singultus: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Hiccup or singultus is a repeated involuntary, spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm accompanied by a sudden closure of the glottis mediated by sensory branches of the phrenic and vagus nerves as well as dorsal sympathetic afferents. The principle efferent limb and diaphragmatic spasms are mediated by motor fibers of the phrenic nerve. Hiccup has been classified as a respiratory reflex and the central connection probably consists an interaction among the brainstem respiratory centers, phrenic nerve nuclei, medullary reticular formation and the hypothalamus. Chronic intractable hiccup may be d…

[Unilateral paralysis of saccades caused by pontine tuberculoma].

A unilateral lesion of the paramedian pontine reticular formation results in an ipsilateral laterality paralysis with abolition of all saccadic movements directed to the side of the lesion. It is generally accepted that the oculocephalic reflex alone enables the eyes to be deviated beyond the median line of the affected side. In the present case of a paramedian pontine tuberculoma, a paralysis of laterality in accordance with the above mentioned opinion was observed initially. Treatment led to recovery of an ipsilateral pursuit of normal amplitude, contrasting with the persistent abolition of …

Brainstem Stroke and Increased Anal Tone.

After suffering a brainstem stroke, a 62-year-old man developed locked-in syndrome including loss of horizontal eye movement and increased anal tone. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the patient revealed a massive stroke in the pons and right cerebellum, which seemed to involve the pontine micturition/defecation center (Barrington's nucleus) and the rostral pontine reticular formation (RPRF). As his increased anal tone was intractable to medical treatment, he required intermittent catheterization with an anal bougie tube. In light of the reported cases, our patient developed increased anal …

Corticosterone Upregulates Gene and Protein Expression of Catecholamine Markers in Organotypic Brainstem Cultures.

This occurs either directly, by acti … el, although they overlap remarkably with disorders affecting catecholamine nuclei of the brainstem reticular formation. In fact, the present study indicates that various doses of glucocorticoids alter the expression of genes and proteins, which are specific for reticular catecholamine neurons. Change of Ascending Reticular Activating System Following Shunt Operation for Hydrocephalus in a Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Patient.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the change of the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS) concurrent with the recovery of impaired consciousn … ed in both hemispheres. In terms of configuration of DTT, the lower portion of the ARAS between the reticular formation and the intralaminar thalamic nuclei did not show a significant change. CONCLUSIONS: A patient with subarachnoid and intraventricular hemorrhage showed recovery of an injured ARAS and consciousness after a shunt operation for hydrocephalus.

Foam sclerotherapy for reticular veins and nontruncal varicose veins of the legs: a retrospective review of outcomes and adverse effects.

BACKGROUND: Sclerotherapy is the criterion standard of treatment for reticular veins. Foam sclerotherapy is safe and effective, although current guidelines limit the volume of foam used per session. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the safety and efficacy of large-volume foam sclerotherapy for the treatment of reticular and nontruncal leg veins. METHODS & MATERIALS: A retrospective review was conducted on all patients undergoing sclerotherapy from 2003 to 2009. Contacted patients graded side effect severity and the degree of vein resolution on a 4-point scale (0-3). The occurrence of cardiovascular

Myoclonus and epilepsy in childhood: 1996 Royaumont meeting.

Sudden and brief involuntary movements of central nervous system (CNS) origin called myoclonus may be cortical (motor strip), thalamocortical (thalamocortical loop) or reticular (caudal reticular formation). Epileptic, cortical and thalamocortical myoclonus are combined with a spike which, when it is focal, needs back-averaging to be demonstrated. Negative myoclonus due to lapse of tone can only be demonstrated during antigravidic posture and may be combined with either a slow wave or the second, positive component of a polyspike-wave. Epileptic myoclonus must be distinguished from epileptic s…

Neurons in the Intermediate Reticular Nucleus Coordinate Postinspiratory Activity, Swallowing, and Respiratory-Sympathetic Coupling in the Rat.

Breathing results from sequential recruitment of muscles in the expiratory, inspiratory, and postinspiratory (post-I) phases of the respiratory cycle. Here we investigate whether neurons in the medullary intermediate reticular nucleus (IRt) are components of a central pattern generator (CPG) that generates post-I activity in laryngeal adductors and vasomotor sympathetic nerves and interacts with other members of the central respiratory network to terminate inspiration. We first identified the region of the (male) rat IRt that contains the highest density of lightly cholinergic neurons, many of
