PURPOSE: To report a case of neovascular glaucoma due to central retinal artery occlusion treated with a single intravitreal injection of bevacizumab.
METHODS: A 68-year-old patient with a 10-week history of central retinal artery occlusion presented with neovascularization of the iris and the angle and intraocular pressure of 30 mm Hg. The patient received a single injection of 1.25 mg bevacizumab in 0.1 mL intravitreally.
RESULTS: Iris and angle neovascularization regressed within 48 hours of the injection. Intraocular pressure dropped from 30 to 15 mm Hg, and there was marked improvement …

CLINICAL CASE: We present a case study of a patient with sudden visual loss, who had 20/200 visual acuity and macular edema at initial evaluation. Angiographies showed no interruption of vascular flow and in the visual field a central island of vision in the inferior hemifield was identified, surrounded by absolute scotoma.
DISCUSSION: Clinical aspect at the initial evaluation required a differential diagnosis between retinal and neural disease. The clinical approach used to integrate the retrospective diagnosis of central retinal artery occlusion is presented, and an explanation is proposed …

The authors report a case of a patient with coronary insufficiency who developed central retinal artery occlusion following cardiac catheterism through the brachial artery and cineangiocoronography. This procedure can lead to embolic phenomena like that which was reported.

BACKGROUND: Charles Bonnet syndrome is characterized by complex, formed visual hallucinations that occur in patients without psychiatric disorders. To the best of our knowledge, it has not been described following central retinal artery occlusion.
OBJECTIVE: To describe 2 patients who experienced formed visual hallucinations characteristic of Charles Bonnet syndrome after sudden, severe visual loss precipitated by central retinal artery occlusion.
PATIENTS: Two patients, aged 77 and 63 years respectively, experienced sudden deterioration of vision following central retinal artery occlusion. …

The authors report a case of local intraarterial fibrinolysis (LIF) in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). A 79-year-old man with stenosis of the left internal carotid artery (ICA) suffered sudden loss of vision in his left eye. LIF was carried out using a microcatheter in the origin of the ophthalmic artery on the side of the CRAO. Treatment was performed with 120,000 IU of urokinase. After LIF, marked improvement of vision was established. No complication occurred during LIF. One month later, carotid artery stenting was performed for the left ICA stenosis. We consider LIF in CRAO is eff…

A case is reported of a patient with bilateral central retinal artery occlusion secondary to giant cell arteritis. After treatment the vision recovered in one eye but remained poor in the other eye. Treatments employed are discussed with particular attention drawn to differences in the treatment of each eye and suggestions are made for treatment of similar cases.

Two cases of transient central retinal artery occlusion were observed preoperatively after uneventful sub-Tenon's infusion of local anesthetic for cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation. In these eyes, the retinal circulation reperfused spontaneously before surgery and there were no visual sequelae. A third case was observed in an eye after strabismus surgery with sub-Tenon's anesthesia. The patient was left with profound visual loss in this eye. The cause of this complication is unknown, but possible factors include mechanical pressure from the bolus of the anesthetic solution or …

Obstruction of the retinal arterial system is most commonly associated with elderly patient populations. The major etiologic factor in adults has been attributed to emboli from atherosclerotic vascular disease of the carotid arteries, with about 75% of patients over the age of 40 years demonstrating this finding. Conversely, arterial obstruction in young patients is rarely secondary to atheromatous disease and has a variety of causative factors.(1) We describe an unusual case of a previously healthy 8-year-old boy who developed a unilateral central retinal artery occlusion in conjunction with …

PURPOSE: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a serious iatrogenic complication of ovulation induction. It is a potentially lethal condition, with severe complications which include ovarian enlargement, and massive fluid redistribution from the vascular system into free spaces resulting in ascites, pleural effusion, electrolyte imbalance, hemoconcentration, hypovolemia, oliguria, and adult respiratory distress syndrome. Thromboembolism is a rare but extremely serious complication.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of severe OHSS, presenting with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).

BACKGROUND: The Wada test induces short-term anesthesia of one hemisphere by injection of sodium amytal into an internal carotid artery. It … evealed small dense hyperfluorescent spots within the occluded retinal vessels.
CONCLUSION: Branch retinal artery occlusions are a possible complication of the Wada test, possibly induced by undissolved contrast medium or sodium amytal.

PURPOSE: To report the first case of bilateral central retinal artery occlusion caused by giant cell arteritis in a Chinese patient.
METHODS: We studied a Chinese patient who had a history of weight loss, calf claudication and sequential right and left central retinal artery occlusion.
RESULTS: The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was greater than 150 mm/h. Temporal artery biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis. Systemic steroid prevented further visual loss in the second eye.
CONCLUSIONS: We believe that this is the first report in literature on the ophthalmological presentat…

There have been few clinical studies that analyzed quantitatively the visual field defects observed in eyes with branch retinal artery occlusion. In the current report we retrospectively studied Humphrey static perimetric results in 7 eyes and Goldmann kinetic perimetric results in 8 eyes with branch retinal occlusion. All but one eye showed altitudinal-like field defects. The static perimetric results demonstrated large difference between sensitivities in each pair of upper and lower measured points adjacent to the horizontal line nasal to Mariott's scotoma, which indicated a steep slope betw…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the agreement between two ophthalmologists in the evaluation of two important funduscopic features related to acute retinal artery occlusion: retinal cloudy swelling and visible retinal emboli.
DESIGN: An interobserver variability study in which two ophthalmologists (one trained in glaucoma, the other in neuro-ophthalmology) independently viewed fundus photographs and categorized them with respect to the presence or absence of cloudy swelling and retinal emboli. Inter- and intraobserver agreement was calculated with the kappa statistic.
SETTING: Retina service at a un…

Retinal artery occlusion related to ocular compression is an uncommon but severe complication of general anaesthesia, most of the time results in blindness. We report a case of central retinal artery occlusion following spinal surgery. We discuss the mechanism of blindness and review the circumstances that may lead to this complication. Proper positioning of the head and avoidance of ocular compression will prevent the occurrence of retinal occlusion during general anaesthesia.
