Retinal diseases are a leading cause of visual impairment globally. Early detection is crucial for effective management, and recent advances in ocular imaging and deep learning have facilitated the development of automated diagnostic systems. Traditional deep learning methods often struggle to effectively capture the overall structural context of the retina and the subtle, localised pathological features required for accurate multi label classification. Moreover, their decision-making processes typically lack transparency, limiting clinical trust and adoption. In this study, we propose an expl…

Diabetic retinal disease remains a leading cause of vision loss, with current treatment limited by frequent injections and poor adherence. Ongoing clinical trials are evaluating topical therapies, sustained delivery systems, and gene therapy as alternatives to current gold standard treatments. The field is shifting toward earlier, more personalized, and more durable disease-modifying strategies.

Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) is a non-invasive retinal imaging technique that helps visualize naturally occurring fluorophores, such as lipofuscin, and provides valuable insight into retinal diseases-particularly inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). FAF is especially useful in detecting subclinical or early-stage IRDs and in monitoring disease progression over time. In Stargardt disease, areas of decreased autofluorescence correlate with disease progression and have been proposed as a biomarker for future clinical trials. FAF can also help differentiate Stargardt disease from other macular dyst…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neurodegeneration is a common endpoint of various blinding retinal diseases. Yet, despite exciting advances in disease treatment, there continues to exist a critical need for the development of neuroprotective strategies to prevent retinal cell death. Here, we summarize the recent advances in neuroprotective strategies.
RECENT FINDINGS: From laboratory deciphering of the mechanisms involved in disease, many novel neuroprotective strategies have emerged and are currently under investigation for the treatment of various retinal and ocular diseases such as inherited retinal de…

Zinc is an essential trace mineral that plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions, including immune response, wound healing, and protein synthesis. Regarding eye health, zinc is particularly important due to its high concentration, functional abundance, and critical roles in the retina/RPE/choroid complex, where both deficiency and excess can lead to cellular dysfunction. This mineral contributes significantly to the maintenance of the structure and function of the tissues, and it is believed to help protect against oxidative stress, which can damage cells in the eye. The retinal pigme

The complement cascade is a vital system in the human body's defense against pathogens. During the natural aging process, it has been observed that this system is imperative for ensuring the integrity and homeostasis of the retina. While this system is critical for proper host defense and retinal integrity, it has also been found that dysregulation of this system may lead to certain retinal pathologies, including geographic atrophy and diabetic retinopathy. Targeting components of the complement system for retinal diseases has been an area of interest, and in vivo, ex vivo, and clinical trials…

PURPOSE: To investigate interocular asymmetry (IA) of retinal structure and vessel density in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and normal controls (NC).
METHODS: Seventy-eight subjects including 40 PD patients and 38 NC had completed optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and neurological examinations for three rating scales (UPDRS-III, MMSE and MoCA). The IA was calculated by the absolute value of difference in right and left eyes. The IA of thickness in macular ganglion cell inner-plexiform layer (GCIPL), peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), and vessel density of

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a sight threatening condition that warrants immediate surgical intervention. To date, 29 genes have been associated with monogenic disorders involving RRD. In addition, RRD can occur as a multifactorial disease through a combined effect of multiple genetic variants and non-genetic risk factors. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the spectrum of hereditary disorders involving RRD. We discuss genotype-phenotype correlations of these monogenic disorders, and describe genetic variants associated with RRD through multifactorial inherita

Abnormal vasculature in the retina, specifically tortuous vessels and capillary degeneration, is common in many of the most prevalent retinal degenerative diseases, currently affecting millions of people across the world. However, the formation and development of abnormal vasculature in the context of retinal degenerative diseases are still poorly understood. The FVB/N (rd1) and rd10 mice are well-studied animal models of retinal degenerative diseases, but how photoreceptor degeneration leads to vascular abnormality in the diseases remains to be elucidated. Here, we used advancements in confoc

Ceramide (Cer) plays an essential role in photoreceptor cell death in the retina. On the one hand, Cer accumulation emerges as a common feature during retina neurodegeneration, leading to the death of photoreceptors. On the other hand, Cer deficiency has also recently been associated with retinal dysfunction and degeneration. Although more and more evidence supports the importance of maintaining Cer homeostasis in the retina, mechanistic explanations of the observed phenotypes, especially in the context of Cer deficiency, are still lacking. An enhanced understanding of Cer's role in the retina

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma are degenerative conditions of the retina and a significant cause of irreversible blindness in developed countries. Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common dementia of the elderly, is often associated with AMD and glaucoma. The cardinal features of AD include extracellular accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ) and intracellular deposits of hyper-phosphorylated tau (p-tau). Neuroinflammation and brain iron dyshomeostasis accompany Aβ and p-tau deposits and, together, lead to progressive neuronal death and dementia. The accumulation of Aβ and iron i

The retina is the neural portion and light-sensitive layer of the eye, which has been observed in most of the vertebrates. The retina is composed of light-sensitive cells that absorb light and convert it into neural signals. These signals are sent to the brain for visual recognition. It has been shown that many pathogenesis conditions, including inflammation, angiogenesis, oxidative stress, and imbalanced histone modifications in the retina are associated with initiation and progression of retinal diseases (ie, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration). Currently avai…

INTRODUCTION: To report an unusual case of CMV retinitis in Primary Immune Deficiency Disease (PIDD).
CASE REPORT: 13-year-old child with combined T and B cell deficiencies was diagnosed of bilateral zone 1 CMV retinitis. Intravitreal injections were unable to be given in a regular and timely manner under general anaesthesia due to her underlying systemic disease. The child was treated with intravenous ganciclovir for 8 weeks until eventual resolution of the retinitis. However, visual acuity deteriorated due to progressive optic nerve involvement.
CONCLUSION: Paediatric patients often do not

PURPOSE: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant, neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disturbances. Studies have shown retinal abnormalities in patients and mouse models with HD; however, to our knowledge, no prior research papers evaluated retinal structure and function in a presymptomatic patient with HD. The aim of this report is to present a case of retinal dysfunction in a presymptomatic patient with HD.
METHODS: We investigated retinal structure and function in a 25-year-old male who tested positive for
