Ecological and bacteriologic observations of small mammals captured in Dhaka, Bangladesh, indicated that Bartonella infections occurred in high prevalence among lesser bandicoot rats (Bandicota bengalensis), black rats (Rattus rattus), and house shrews (Suncus murinus). In May 2005, CDC received reports of illness in four solid-organ transplant recipients who were later determined to have been infected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) from a common organ donor. Three of the four organ recipients died, 23-27 days after transplantation. This report updates information about the ongoing investigation and provides interim measures for reducing the risk for LCMV infection from pet rodents associated with this outbreak.

A Preble's meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius preblei) parasitized by five grey flesh fly (Wohlfahrtia vigil) larvae was discovered at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado (USA), in June 1998. This is the first documented case of grey flesh fly parasitism of jumping mice (Family Dipodidae). The lesion was approximately 6 mm wide and was partially hidden under a mat of wet fur. In all fertile females the fragile X chromosome was almost always late replicating (inactive) in an average 82% of cells whereas in infertile females, it was early replicating (active) in about the same percentage of cells. Over 100 million persons suffer from diseases caused by filariae infestation, and one billion are at risk. A simple isolation method for both analytical and preparative separation is presented. Based on the simplest field-flow fractionation technique, the gravitational one, effective isolation of microfilariae is achieved. The toxicity of the rodenticidal product Pyriminyl (Vacor) was tested in 4 dogs, 9 cats, 11 coypus and 16 ducks. In the tested dogs the 1000mg dose per kg l. w. was lethal only in 17% of cases. The results demonstrate that the LD50 for the dog is higher than stated in the literature (1000 mg/kg l. w.).
