The placental barrier in allogenic immune conflict in spontaneous early abortions: immunohistochemical and morphological study.

PROBLEM: Morphologic changes in the placental barrier in spontaneous early abortions under the maternal-embryonic immune conflict, and the role of maternal immunoglobulins (Igs) in these changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined chorionic villi and other tissues obtained from 54 aborts between weeks 3.5 and 8 of pregnancy. Material was divided into two groups. Group 1 (control) contained 15 medically recommended and spontaneous early aborts with no signs of inflammations or pathologic immune processes. Group 2 contained 39 spontaneous early aborts with acute chorionic villitis. Immunohistoc

Public-Private Partnerships in tuberculosis service delivery in Somalia: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in Somalia, where a fragile health system and reliance on private providers complicate care. Although Public-Private Partnerships are globally recognized for strengthening TB services, their role and implementation in Somalia's conflict-affected context are not well understood. This study aimed to explore the role, challenges, and opportunities of Public-Private Partnerships in delivering TB services in Somalia, generating evidence to inform policy and practice. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted in urban and

The Influence of Cognitive Appraisals on the Association between Callous-Unemotional Traits and Conduct Problems during Middle Childhood.

Existing research on callous-unemotional (CU) traits and conduct problems primarily focuses on the concurrent or unidirectional associations between these constructs (i.e., from CU traits to CP), with less attention given to their dynamic interplay during middle childhood. It is possible that socialization agents, such as peers, play a significant role in shaping the dynamic relation between CU traits and conduct problems early in development. Additionally, prior studies have shown that both CU traits and conduct problems are associated with poorer peer functioning. Considering the social info

[Suicidal behavior in the elderly].

Major depression is an often unrecognized cause of suicide in the elderly. The high risk of suicide is not realized early enough and depression not treated rigorously. The most common initiating events are marital conflict, social isolation, loneliness, physical illness and conflicts with relatives, especially children. Socio-cultural influences and the role of elderly people in society have a significant relevance for the incidence of suicide in the elderly. "Considered" suicides are less common than is often assumed. The treatment of suicidal elderly people must involve the whole life situat

Religion and mental health seeking behaviors in war-torn zones of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

ObjectiveAlthough religious leaders play an important role in providing informal mental health care to individuals struggling to seek religious and spiritual care, existing studies have not explored the role of psychiatric symptoms and motivating factors in seeking mental health services from religious leaders in religious listening centers and mental hospitals. This paper presents preliminary data from a survey aimed at assessing psychiatric symptoms and factors associated with access to spiritual services among 151 individuals at a religious listening center, as well as to determine the path

TPJ-M1 interaction in the control of shared representations: New insights from tDCS and TMS combined.

There is extensive evidence that perceived and internally planned actions have a common representational basis: action observation can induce an automatic tendency to imitate others. If perceived and executed action, however, are based on shared representations, the question arises how we can distinguish self-related and other-related representations. It has been suggested that the control of shared representations involves a neural network centered on the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ). However, the specific role of the TPJ in controlling shared representations is still not clear. In a confl

The impact of conflicts on patients with chronic kidney disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with kidney disease, especially patients with kidney failure, are disproportionately affected in settings of active conflict, as they rely on near constant medical care for survival. Recent increases in violent conflicts are endangering increasing numbers of patients, requiring immediate attention, a revision of current knowledge and constructive actions. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent violent conflicts have revealed the profound vulnerability of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In war-torn regions such as Ethiopia, Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine, availability of ess

Hemispheric asymmetry in the prefrontal cortex for complex cognition.

With the exception of language, hemispheric asymmetry has not historically been an important issue in the frontal lobe literature. Data generated over the past 20 years is forcing a reconsideration of this position. There is now considerable evidence to suggest that the left prefrontal cortex is an inference engine that automatically makes simple conceptual, logical, and causal connections to fill in missing information and eliminate uncertainty or indeterminacy. This is a fine-tuning of the "left hemisphere interpreter" account from the callosotomy patient literature. What is new is an unders

Fighting force and experience combine to determine contest success in a warlike mammal.

Conflicts between social groups or "intergroup contests" are proposed to play a major role in the evolution of cooperation and social organization in humans and some nonhuman animal societies. In humans, success in warfare and other collective conflicts depends on both fighting group size and the presence and actions of key individuals, such as leaders or talismanic warriors. Understanding the determinants of intergroup contest success in other warlike animals may help to reveal the role of these contests in social evolution. Using 19 y of data on intergroup encounters in a particularly violen

The Synergistic Influence of Life Experiences and Cultural Nuances on Development of Depression: A Cognitive Behavioral Perspective.

The synergistic influences of everyday life experiences, societal expectations, and cultural nuances affect a person's ability to successfully manage their life and remain mentally healthy. Persons from culturally and ethnically diverse populations may incur depression when societal expectations and cultural influences are in conflict with each other. Chronic stress, often-referred to as toxic stress, contributes to the development of depression as it is unrelenting, beginning in childhood and continuing into adulthood. This article discusses connections between societal expectations, persons'

Negative consequences of conflict-related sexual violence on survivors: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Conflicts exacerbate dynamics of power and inequalities through violence normalization, which acts as a facilitator for conflict-related sexual violence. Literature addressing its negative outcomes on survivors is scant. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the qualitative evidence reported in scientific literature and focusing on the negative consequences of conflict-related sexual violence on victims' physical, psychological, and social dimensions of health in a gender-inclusive and disaggregated form. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on January 13, 2023 on

Diagnostic reframing of intractable environmental problems: case of a contested multiparty public land-use conflict.

Intractable conflicts are omnipresent in environmental management. These conflicts do not necessarily resist resolution but need to be fundamentally transformed in order to reach agreement. Reframing, a process that allows disputants to create new alternative understandings of the problem, is one way of transforming these conflicts. Cognitive and interactional reframing are the two major approaches to conflict transformation. These approaches have some drawbacks. Cognitive reframing does not guarantee commensurate consideration of all disputants' views about the problem. Interactional reframin

[Anorexia nervosa in boys: a fact].

Adolescent anorexia nervosa is characterised by its relationship to pubertal conflicts. The authors report two cases showing that this syndrome is not confined to girls. In boys, it usually results in delayed puberty. The diagnostic criteria are detailed. The concept of pathological process, causing stereotyped syndrome, is distinguished from the notion of psychological organisation which gives rise to wide individual variation. The pathological outcome is considered in the context of pubertal dynamics, marked by the reemergence of the oedipus conflict and the rearrangement of the patients ide
