BACKGROUND: Salinity is a major abiotic stress factor that affects plant growth, secondary metabolism, and genomic stability. Phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity are key biochemical indicators of plant stress responses, while retrotransposon activity reflects molecular-level genomic plasticity. This study investigated the physiological and molecular responses of Linum usitatissimum L. (flax) to different salt concentrations, aiming to better understand the mechanisms underlying salinity tolerance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Flax plantlets were grown in vitro on Murashige and Skoog (MS) mediu

Salinity stress is a major environmental problem affecting agricultural productivity worldwide. Bioagents such as plant growth-promoting fungi (PGPF) are gained increasing attention to improve plant growth and resilience to this problem. This study addresses the isolation and screening of endophytic fungal isolates from Atriplex nummularia as well as soil fungi for salinity tolerance. Screening revealed two fungal isolates AS1 and B4, exhibiting exceptional salt tolerance at different concentrations of NaCl from 2 to 10%. Morphological and molecular identification confirmed AS1 was identified …

The use of yeasts tolerant to acid (low pH) and salt stress is of industrial importance for several bioproduction processes. To identify new candidate genes having potential roles in low-pH tolerance, we screened an expression genomic DNA library of a multiple-stress-tolerant yeast, Issatchenkia orientalis (Pichia kudriavzevii), for clones that allowed Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells to grow under highly acidic conditions (pH 2.0). A genomic DNA clone containing two putative open reading frames was obtained, of which the putative protein-coding gene comprising 1629 bp was retransformed into the

An in situ generated pyridinium trifluoromethoxide salt (PyOCF3) is a highly effective deoxyfluorination reagent for the synthesis of acid fluorides. PyOCF3 is formed at room temperature from the reaction of 2,4-dinitro(trifluoromethoxy)benzene with 4-dimethylaminopyridine. PyOCF3 undergoes slow release of fluorophosgene and fluoride, which serve as the electrophile and nucleophile, respectively, for deoxyfluorination. A wide substrate scope and high functional group tolerance are demonstrated. Furthermore, the acid fluorides can be purified by filtration and telescoped to various known reacti

Soil salinity is major abiotic stresses affecting morphological, biochemical and physiological processes of plant growth. Chryseobacterium gleum sp. SUK isolated from salt-stressed soil exhibited ACC (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate) deaminase activity with IAA (indole acetic acid), siderophore, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide production, 2% salt tolerance and fungal cell wall degrading enzyme production (cellulase, protease). The isolate also showed a poultry feather degrading activity which is the main waste material of poultry industry and opulent source of proteins, amino acids, nitrogen, phos…

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a common benign vascular lesion characterized by rapid growth and a tendency to bleed. This case series presents 5 patients with solitary PG lesions successfully treated with the topical application of table salt under occlusion. All patients achieved complete clinical and dermoscopic resolution without scarring or recurrence, and treatment was well tolerated with high patient satisfaction. Given its simplicity, safety, and cost-effectiveness, topical salt application may represent a valuable noninvasive alternative for managing PG.

Feline obesity is an increasingly prevalent health concern and is closely associated with metabolic disorders and intestinal dysbiosis. This study aimed to screen feline-derived lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for bile salt hydrolase activity, in vitro cholesterol-removal capacity, and selected probiotic-associated characteristics. Approximately 700 LAB isolates were obtained from fecal samples of healthy domestic cats and evaluated for bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity, among which 105 isolates were identified as BSH-positive. Further screening was performed based on BSH activity, cholesterol-rem

Drought stress severely limits plant growth and crop productivity. Although wild species adapted to extreme environments represent valuable genetic resources for understanding stress tolerance mechanisms, their molecular basis remains largely unexplored. Here, KaMYB71, encoding an R2R3-MYB transcription factor, was identified from the desert shrub Krascheninnikovia arborescens through transcriptomic screening. KaMYB71 was predominantly expressed in roots and was rapidly induced by salt, osmotic stress, and abscisic acid (ABA). It encoded a nuclear-localized transcriptional activator. Overexpre

miRNAs function as negative regulators that significantly influence plant growth and stress responses. Within rice and other monocotyledonous plants, miR1432 plays a conserved role in seed development and disease resistance. However, its involvement in the response to abiotic stresses remains unclear. Our study aimed to elucidate this mechanism by predicting the targeting of the rice P-type IIB Ca2+ ATPase gene OsACAs by miR1432 and identifying its cleavage sites via 5'RACE. We observed induced expression of miR1432 and its target gene, OsACA6, under abiotic stresses. Overexpression (OX) of mi

Salt therapy has been used for millennia, but modern salt therapy can be traced to the salt mines and caves in Europe and Russia from the early 19th century. Today, breathing in the microclimate of caves with their stable air temperature and moderate to high humidity in the presence of sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium and the absence of airborne pollutants and pollen is called speleotherapy. The inhalation of natural pure sodium chloride (NaCl) in a controlled environment (air temperature 18° to 24°C and relative humidity 40% to 60%) is called halotherapy. The main active ingredient in

Nitrate tolerance is defined as an attenuation or even loss of hemodynamic and anti-ischemic effects during continuous nitrate medication. The blunted response may be due to the development of pseudotolerance and true pharmacologic tolerance. Pseudotolerance is the result of volume and salt retention, as well as the stimulation of counter-regulatory mechanisms which may alter the baseline hemodynamics of a patient during nitrate therapy. Far less important are changes in nitrate pharmacokinetics. True pharmacological tolerance may also be of practical importance. Diminished uptake of nitrates

There is a high incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs) in Ethiopia and folate insufficiency, a primary risk factor for NTDs, is common among Ethiopian women of reproductive age (WRA). Folic acid fortification of salt has been proposed as a strategy to control these problems. In preparation for an intervention trial to assess the nutritional effects of folic acid-fortified salt, we measured discretionary salt intakes among nonpregnant WRA using observed weighed food records, and we assessed household salt disappearance rates. We estimated the distribution of usual discretionary salt intake by

This study investigated l-malic acid (l-MA) as a protectant enhancing Bifidobacterium breve Bb18 (Bb18) bile tolerance and its synergistic therapeutic efficacy against DSS-induced colitis in mice. In vitro, 0.4% l-MA optimally enhanced Bb18 tolerance to glycodeoxycholic acid (GDCA) by 52.3%, preserving membrane integrity, boosting energy metabolism, and upregulating bile salt efflux genes, thus promoting a multidimensional cellular adaptive response. In vivo, the combination of Bb18 and l-MA synergistically alleviated the colon length shortening by 20.1%, reduced inflammation, and restored gut

Efficient cargo delivery is essential for plant trait engineering, yet existing methods are often species-specific and ineffective across diverse habitats. Here, we develop core-shell microneedles for targeted delivery of biomolecular cargoes and active microorganisms into both terrestrial and aquatic plants. The microneedle architecture is rationally engineered to resist water exposure and release cargo upon contact with plant interstitial fluid, enabling controlled delivery into tissues and cells. We demonstrate that these core-shell microneedles can efficiently transport diverse cargoes, fr

Soil salinity is a significant abiotic stress that restricts plant growth and agricultural productivity. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offer an eco-friendly and sustainable strategy to mitigate the detrimental effects of salinity by enhancing nutrient availability and promoting plant development. In this study, twelve halophilic bacterial isolates were obtained from saline soils of coastal regions in India and screened for PGPR traits, including siderophore production, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), ammonia production, exopolysaccharide (EPS), cellulase activ

Fasciola-induced fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease with significant health and economic impacts on humans and livestock. Freshwater Lymnaea snails serve as intermediate hosts, contributing to the increasing prevalence of fascioliasis in cattle in coastal areas. The salinity tolerance of Lymnaea snails was investigated along with their distribution and Fasciola infection rates in both snails and grazing cattle in Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, and Soc Trang provinces in Mekong Delta, Vietnam, where seawater reversely enters into the paddy field during the dry season. Lymnaea snails were collected from 53

UNLABELLED: Soil salinization usually occurs in arid and semi-arid climate areas from 37 to 50 degrees north latitude and 73 to 123 degrees east longitude. These regions are inhabited by a large number of Coleopteran insects, which play an important role in the ecological cycle. However, little is known about the endosymbiotic microbial taxa and their biological characteristics in these insects. A study of endosymbiotic microorganisms of Coleoptera from Xinjiang, a typical arid and inland saline area, revealed that endosymbiont bacteria with salinity tolerance are common among the endosymbiont

To address salinity stress in plants in an eco-friendly manner, this study investigated the potential effects of salinity-resistant bacteria isolated from saline agricultural soils on the growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativus, cv. Royal) seedlings. A greenhouse factorial experiment was conducted based on a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors, salinity at four levels and five bacterial treatments, with three replications (n = 3). Initially, fifty bacterial isolates were screened for their salinity and drought tolerance, phosphate solubilization activity, along with production of a
