OBJECTIVE: Diagnosing myeloid sarcoma remains challenging, and we aimed to provide clinicopathological features to facilitate diagnosis.
METHOD: Clinicopathological data from 41 patients with de novo and 31 with secondary myeloid sarcoma were reviewed.
RESULTS: Most de novo cases presented with isolated myeloid sarcoma (n = 19) or myeloid sarcoma with concurrent acute myeloid leukemia (n = 15). Most secondary cases presented after acute myeloid leukemia (n = 11), myeloproliferative neoplasm (n = 9), or myelodysplastic syndrome (n = 8). Most frequent localizations were skin and lymph nodes. Myeloid sarcomas (MS) are tumors composed by myeloid elements and developing outside bone marrow. The prognosis is overall poor, only stem cell transplantation being consistently reposted as a potentially curative approach. In this study we explored whether microvessel density, a biomarker of angiogenesis, might be relevant in MS. We studied 60 MS, 24 acute myeloid leukemia, 5 normal bone marrow samples and 2 cases of extramedullary hemopoiesis in patients without evidence of hematological malignancy. We used immunohistochemistry (anti-CD34) to identify and quantify micro-vessel density (MVD)

We report the rare occurrence of donor-derived myeloid sarcoma in two kidney transplant patients who received organs from a single deceased donor. There was no evidence of preexisting hematologic malignancy in the donor at the time of organ recovery. Both recipients developed leukemic involvement that appeared to be limited to the transplanted organ. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and molecular genotyping analyses confirmed that the malignant cells were of donor origin in each patient. Allograft nephrectomy and immediate withdrawal of immunosuppression were performed in both cases;

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics, treatment and prognosis of solitary myeloid sarcoma (MS).
METHODS: The clinical data of 14 solitary MS patients were retrospectively analysed, including their clinical features and treatment, and were evaluated.
RESULTS: A total of 14 cases of solitary MS mainly occurred in middle-aged population with the median age 41 years old (17-62 years old). The involved sites were more extensive, including breast, testis, spinal canal, skin, gastrointestinal system, nose and so on. The poorly differentiated cells of small to medium size showed di

Mediastinal granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is a relatively rare disease. We experienced a case of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that took a rapid turn for the worse after the resection of a mediastinal GS. A healthy 60-year-old man had been in good general health all his life, but was diagnosed with a mediastinal tumor by his family physician and was referred to our department. The patient underwent resection of the mediastinal tumor because thymoma was highly suspected. On postoperative day (POD) 3, the patient suffered a fever as well as an elevated white blood cell (WBC) count and a high C-reacti

Myeloid sarcoma involving the genitourinary system is a rare complication associated with acute myelogenous leukemia or other myeloproliferative disorders. The diagnosis is made by pathologic findings of diffuse infiltration of intermediate-size neoplastic cells and fibrosis of the affected organ. Immunohistochemically, the cells stain positive for myeloperoxidase, CD45, and CD117 but negative for CD34. Treatment involves local surgical extirpation, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. We report the second known case of myeloid sarcoma involving the epididymis in a patient with a history of acute m

Myeloid sarcomas are tumour masses of myeloid leukaemic cells at extramedullary sites. These tumours can, on occasion, occur without concurrent or antecedent leukaemia. Myeloid sarcomas have been described at unusual locations including the female genital tract. An unusual case of therapy-related acute myeloid leukaemia (t-AML) presenting as isolated monoblastic myeloid sarcoma of the uterus in a patient who had received adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer is presented. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation analysis performed on paraffin-wax-embedded tumour tissue revealed a mixed-lineage leu

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), Langerhans cell sarcoma (LCS), and myeloid sarcoma are distinct haematological malignancies. While CLL is a common mature B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder, LCS and isolated myeloid sarcoma are rare entities that can present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report the case of a patient with established CLL whose clinical condition deteriorated rapidly during treatment. Computed tomography (CT) imaging demonstrated the development of new masses that were initially suspicious for Richter's transformation. However, tissue biopsy confirme

The molecular mechanism of myeloid sarcoma (MS) formation remains nuclear. Our clinical and mouse model findings from a previous study revealed that cooperation of KMT2A (MLL) translocation (MLL-t) with activating N-/K-RAS mutations promoted MS formation in a shorter latency. To improve the understanding of MS formation, in this study, we performed imaging cell trafficking analysis and demonstrated that cells harboring cooperating mutations migrated more slowly to omental adipose tissues and more cells were retained in adipose tissues in vivo. Comparison of transcriptome profiling among three

Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a rare neoplasm that has a roughly 15-30% chance of transforming into acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Acute leukemias have been known to cause pleural or pericardial effusions but having CMML transform into AML while presenting as a cardiac myeloid sarcoma causing pericardial effusions makes this case unique. A 59-year-old patient presented to the emergency room with shortness of breath and was found to be in cardiac tamponade requiring urgent care. The thoracic surgery team performed a pericardiectomy and placed a window drain. Cardiac tissue biopsy pro

This report describes a 56-year-old man who was diagnosed with myeloid sarcoma (MS) of the testis and right shoulder after receiving allogenic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) at the age of 47 for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with inv (16) (p13.1;q22). Nine years after allo-SCT, he complained of a painful right testicular mass. He underwent orchiectomy, and the pathologic diagnosis was MS. Inv (16) was identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using testicular tumor specimens. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) revealed FDG

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary neoplasm of myeloid cells, which can arise before, concurrently with, or following hematolymphoid malignancies. We report 04 such cases of MS, diagnosed in this institute over a period of 6 years, during various phases of their respective myeloid neoplasms/leukemias. These cases include MS occurring as a relapse of AML (Case 1), MS occurring as an initial presentation of CML (Case 2), MS occurring during ongoing chemotherapy in APML (Case 3), and MS presenting as a progression of MDS to AML (Case 4). In the absence of relevant clinical history and

BACKGROUND Myeloid sarcoma is a rarely observed extramedullary presentation of myeloid leukemia that seldom manifests in the breast. Myeloid sarcoma can occur before, concurrently with, or following acute myeloid leukemia presentation. Few reports have focused on the imaging findings in cases of myeloid sarcoma of the breast, and the existing findings are variable and nonspecific; the present case report aimed to bridge this gap. CASE REPORT A 24-year-old female presented with a palpable lump at the upper outer quadrant of her right breast. She had noticed the mass 2 days prior to presentation

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is an extramedullary tumor composed of immature myeloid precursor cells and represents a tissue manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It may occur concurrently with AML, precede marrow disease, or present at relapse. Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement is uncommon and frequently poses a diagnostic challenge due to morphological overlap with lymphoid and other GI malignancies. We report the case of a 38-year-old man presenting with acute intestinal obstruction secondary to a duodenal-jejunal mass. Histopathological examination demonstrated diffuse submucosal infiltra

Myeloid sarcoma (MS), also known as granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma, is a rare extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). It represents a tumour-like accumulation of myeloid blasts outside the bone marrow. Orbital involvement is uncommon and may mimic inflammatory or infectious conditions, creating significant diagnostic challenges. We report a 24-year-old female who presented with a two-week history of progressive left orbital pain and swelling, initially managed as presumed orbital cellulitis with oral flucloxacillin and topical chloramphenicol, which subsequently progre

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is an extramedullary tumor of myeloid precursor cells, frequently associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and rarely occurring in isolation. We present a child with obstructive jaundice secondary to a pancreatic head mass. Initial imaging was consistent with pancreatic hematoma; however, continued symptoms led to endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided biopsies that raised concern for autoimmune pancreatitis. Further histological and cytogenetic analysis confirmed pancreatic MS associated with a RUNX1::RUNX1T1 fusion. Bone marrow evaluation was negative by conventional di

Following a case report in which acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) presenting as a soft tissue mass was misdiagnosed as composite hemangioendothelioma due to ERG and CD31 co-expression, we investigated whether this vascular marker co-expression is an isolated phenomenon or a reproducible feature of AMKL and other myeloid neoplasms, with particular relevance to distinguishing extramedullary myeloid neoplasms from vascular tumors. We studied 11 AMKL, 17 myeloid sarcoma (MS), 10 acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 40 chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (10 each of essential thrombocythemia, chron
