INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate the relationship between central sarcopenia and survival in patients with pathological fracture.
METHODS: We reviewed records of patients who were treated for pathological fracture of axial and appendicular skeleton in our clinic between 2011 and 2020. We used the psoas: lumbar vertebral index (PLVI) on axial computer tomographic evaluation to assess for central sarcopenia. A multivariate Cox algorithm was applied to recognize these factors independently associated with one month, six months, one year, and overall survival.
RESULTS: A total of 147 patien…

Cirrhosis predisposes to abnormalities in energy, hormonal, and immunological homeostasis. Disturbances in these metabolic processes create susceptibility to sarcopenia or pathological muscle wasting. Sarcopenia is prevalent in cirrhosis and its presence portends significant adverse outcomes including the length of hospital stay, infectious complications, and mortality. This highlights the importance of identification of at-risk individuals with early nutritional, therapeutic and physical therapy intervention. This manuscript summarizes literature relevant to sarcopenia in cirrhosis, describes…

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia is one of the most common complication associated with mortality in cirrhotic patients. However, the lack of an objective and reliable method to quantify muscle mass has limited the general incorporation of sarcopenia into cirrhosis prognostic scores. In this article, we highlight crosssectional imaging-based estimation of skeletal muscle mass for diagnosing sarcopenia in cirrhotic patients and its effect on health related quality of life.
METHODS: After getting ethical clearance and informed consent, all patients with cirrhosis were taken and assessed for …

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia (SA) is a progressive skeletal muscle disorder, associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes, including falls, fractures, physical disability and mortality. Several risks factors may contribute to the development of SA in the elderly; among them, nutrition plays a key role in muscle health. The elderly are at risk of inadequate intake in terms of micronutrients affecting muscle homeostasis, such as B vitamins, related to homocysteine (Hcy) metabolism.
OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: This narrative review analysed the association between increased Hcy levels and SA, accord…

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia has been recognized as an inevitable part of aging. However, its severity and the age at which it begins cannot be predicted by age alone. The condition can be categorized into primary or age-related sarcopenia and secondary sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is diagnosed as primary when there are no other specific causes. However, secondary sarcopenia occurs if other factors, including malignancy or organ failure, are evident in addition to aging. The prevalence of secondary sarcopenia is far greater than that of primary sarcopenia and requires special attention. To date, nutrition…

Although the numbers of aged populations have risen considerably in the last few decades, the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has revealed an extensive vulnerability among these populations. Sarcopenia is an age-related disorder that increases hospitalization, dependencies, and mortality in older adults. It starts to develop in midlife or even earlier as a result of unbalanced diet/poor nutrition and low levels of physical activity, in addition to chronic disorders such as obesity and diabetes mellitus. Given that social isolation is adopted as the most protective measure against C…

INTRODUCTION: In view of the method of diagnosing sarcopenia being complex and considered to be difficult to introduce into routine practice, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) recommends the use of the SARC-F questionnaire as a way to introduce assessment and treatment of sarcopenia into clinical practice. Only recently, some studies have turned their attention to the presence of sarcopenia in systemic sclerosis (SSc).There is no data about performance of SARC-F and other screening tests for sarcopenia in this population.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of S…

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of sarcopenia with osteoporosis results in a higher risk of falling and fractures. It was noted that patients who had completed their planned 5-year denosumab therapy course as treatment for these conditions started to sustain falls.
PURPOSE: To assess (a) whether denosumab has a unique dual effect on both bone and muscle in comparison to other anti-resorptive agents and (b) its effectiveness in the follow-up period post-treatment completion compared to other anti-resorptive agents.
METHOD: One hundred thirty-five patients diagnosed to have postmenopausal/senile os…

Cancer is often complicated by the deterioration of both muscle mass and function, which may be more pronounced in older people. The prevalence of sarcopenia varies according to tumour type, stage and sarcopenia definition; in gynaecologic malignancies it ranges from 25 to 50%. Unfortunately, sarcopenia is often underdiagnosed especially in overweight and obese patients. The consequences of sarcopenia are serious: shorter time of tumour progression, increased chemotherapy-related toxicity, post-operative complications, poor functional status, hospitalisation, increased length of hospital stay,…

Skeletal muscle is capable of secreting different factors in order to communicate with other tissues. These mediators, the myokines, show potentially far-reaching effects on non-muscle tissues and can provide a molecular interaction between muscle and body physiology. Sarcopenia is a chronic degenerative neuromuscular disease closely related to cardiomyopathy and chronic heart failure, which influences the production and release of myokines. Our objective was to explore the relationship between myokines, sarcopenia, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The autocrine, paracrine, and endocrine act…

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture is both a cause and a consequence of sarcopenia. Older persons with sarcopenia have an increased risk of falling, and the prevalence of sarcopenia may be increased in those who suffer a hip fracture. The aim of this study was to explore potential biomarkers (neuromuscular and peripheral pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress markers) that may be associated with sarcopenia in very old persons with hip fracture.
METHODS: We recruited 150 consecutive patients ≥80 years old admitted to an orthogeriatric unit for an osteoporotic hip fracture. Muscle mass was assessed pre-op…
