Morphea profunda presenting as a neuromuscular mimic.

Localized scleroderma is characterized by idiopathic fibrosis of the skin and adjacent structures, and muscle involvement occurs predominantly in deep morphea. We report a patient with linear scleroderma who presented with slowly progressive atrophy, muscle weakness, and loss of function of her right arm, mimicking a neuromuscular disorder. Muscle biopsy eventually revealed zones of myositis, compatible with morphea profunda. Morphea profunda may thus present as a neuromuscular mimic, even in case of nonprogressive skin sclerosis. Myositis in morphea profunda is generally limited to one region

Neuroimaging is useful for monitoring disease activity in linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre".

Scleroderma is a group of rare chronic connective tissue disorders characterized by collagen accumulation that causes tissue hardening with consequent fibrosis. Skin involvement is mostly frequent, although several internal organs can be impaired (heart, lungs, liver, etc.). In childhood, juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS) is more frequently observed; in this subtype cutaneous lesions predominate frequently on the limbs but also on the face and scalp; in this case, it is referred to as scleroderma "en coup de sabre" (ECDS). Neurological abnormalities have been described in association with E

Antinuclear antibodies: diagnostic markers and clues to the basis of systemic autoimmunity.

Systemic autoimmune diseases include systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma, Sjögren's syndrome and dermato-polymyositis among others. These diseases are characterized by the occurrence of autoantibodies directed against nuclear antigens. Each disease is associated with a distinctive group of autoantibodies which can be used as diagnostic markers or reagents to separate one disease from another. Examples include antibodies to native DNA and to Sm antigen which are distinctive for SLE, antibodies to DNA topoisomerase I, centromere antigens and RNA polymerase I which are distinctive for

A teen-ager with linear atrophoderma of Moulin.

Linear atrophoderma, first described by Moulin, is an acquired unilateral dermatitis localized along the Blaschko lines. It affects children or adolescents of both genders, involving the trunk and the limbs. It is, presumably, a rare cutaneous form of mosaicism. The differential diagnosis of atrophoderma of Moulin involves congenital dermopathies along the Blaschko lines, atrophoderma of Pasini and Pierini, and linear scleroderma. We present here a peculiar case of linear atrophoderma affecting a teenager.

Frontal linear scleroderma en coup de sabre associated with epileptic seizure.

Linear scleroderma is a rare variant of localised scleroderma, which is usually seen in childhood and during the adolescent period, and can cause severe functional morbidity as well as cosmetic and psychological problems. Although its ethiopathogenesis is yet obscure, autoimmunity, local ischaemia and injuries, vaccination, irradiation, vitamin K injections, Borrelia burgdorferi and Varicella infections have been incriminated. A 4-year-old girl who had been followed up for about 18 months with diagnosis of epilepsy had a colour discolouration and depression that first appeared 1

Increased expression of latent TGF-β-binding protein 4 affects the fibrotic process in scleroderma by TGF-β/SMAD signaling.

Scleroderma is a fibrosis-related disorder characterized by cutaneous and internal organ fibrosis, and excessive collagen deposition in extracellular matrix (ECM) is a major cause of fibrosis. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)/SMAD signaling has a central role in the pathogenesis of fibrosis by inducing abnormal collagen accumulation in ECM, and latent TGF-β-binding protein 4 (LTBP-4) affects the secretion of latent TGF-β to ECM. A previous study indicated that bleomycin (BLM) treatment increased LTBP-4 expression in lung fibroblasts of Thy-1 knockout mice with lung fibrosis, and LTBP-4 fur

Linear Scleroderma Causing Arrest of Root Development in a Pediatric Patient.

Localized scleroderma (LoS) or morphea is a rare group of inflammatory disorders resulting in excessive collagen deposition and subsequent sclerosis of the skin and subdermal tissues. Linear scleroderma (LiS) or linear morphea is the most common subtype of LoS in children and primarily affects the face and extremities. This case report details the three-year follow-up of a five-year-old girl with LiS of the left upper lip and adjacent oral mucosal tissue. She also presented with a concurrent developmental root defect of the permanent maxillary left central incisor. Intralesional corticosteroid

Adipose Tissue Grafting for the Treatment of Morphea En Coup De Sabre: A Simple Filler or an Emerging Cellular Therapy?

Linear scleroderma en coup de sabre is a rare chronic autoimmune disease. This form of localized scleroderma manifests through an inflammatory phenomenon of collagen overproduction and extracellular matrix destruction, affecting the skin and subcutaneous tissues of the face. This active pathological process is challenging to control and often goes unnoticed at its early stage. The sequelae manifest as an alopecic frontal scar lesion, causing the patient significant aesthetic and psychological damage. In this study, we report two clinical cases in which aesthetic sequelae were treated by autolo

Autoantibodies in Morphea: An Update.

Skin autoimmune conditions belong to a larger group of connective tissue diseases and primarily affect the skin, but might also involve underlying tissues, such as fat tissue, muscle, and bone. Autoimmune antibodies (autoantibodies) play a role in autoimmune skin diseases, such as localized scleroderma also termed morphea, and systemic scleroderma, also called systemic sclerosis (SSc). The detailed studies on the biological role of autoantibodies in autoimmune skin diseases are limited. This results in a few available tools for effective diagnosis and management of autoimmune skin diseases. Th

Neurologic involvement in scleroderma en coup de sabre.

Localized scleroderma is a rare disease, characterized by sclerotic lesions. A variety of presentations have been described, with different clinical characteristics and specific prognosis. In scleroderma en coup de sabre (LScs) the atrophic lesion in frontoparietal area is the disease hallmark. Skin and subcutaneous are the mainly affected tissues, but case reports of muscle, cartilage, and bone involvement are frequent. These cases pose a difficult differential diagnosis with Parry-Romberg syndrome. Once considered an exclusive cutaneous disorder, the neurologic involvement present in LScs ha

Parry-romberg syndrome with en coup de sabre.

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a relatively rare degenerative disorder that is poorly understood. PRS is characterized by slowly progressing atrophy affecting one side of the face, and is frequently associated with localized scleroderma, especially linear scleroderma, which is known as en coup de sabre. This is a report of the author's experiences with PRS accompanying en coup de sabre, and a review of the ongoing considerable debate associated with these two entities. Case 1 was a 37-year-old woman who had right hemifacial atrophy with unilateral en coup de sabre for seven years. Fat graftin

Eosinophilic fascitis: a report of two cases treated with ultraviolet A1 phototherapy.

Eosinophilic fascitis (EF) (synonyms: Shulman's syndrome, diffuse fascitis with eosinophilia) is a disease characterized by a complex set of symptoms with scleroderma-like skin lesions, the absence of Raynaud's phenomenon and other non-mandatory symptoms including eosinophilia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hypergammaglobulinemia and high levels of circulating immune complexes. EF is probably not a separate disease entity, but an acute variant of localized scleroderma. This rare disease of unknown etiology is usually seen in middle-aged adults. Data on CUX1 isoforms in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis lung and systemic sclerosis skin tissue sections.

This data article contains complementary figures related to the research article entitled, "Transforming growth factor-β-induced CUX1 isoforms are associated with fibrosis in systemic sclerosis lung fibroblasts" (Ikeda et al. (2016) [2], http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.bbrep.2016.06.022), which presents that TGF-β increased CUX1 binding in the proximal promoter and enhancer of the COL1A2 and regulated COL1. Further, in the scleroderma (SSc) lung and diffuse alveolar damage lung sections, CUX1 localized within the α- smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) positive cells (Fragiadaki et al., 2011) [1], "High do

[Parry-Romberg syndrome and Rasmussen syndrome: only an incidental similarity?].

The Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare and poorly understood disease characterized by slowly progressive, localized atrophy of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and bones. The atrophy is typically localized in the face and begins in youth. In some patients, imaging can show the lesions and atrophy of the ipsilateral hemisphere of the brain. We report on a patient in whom the disease has lasted 36 years and discuss the possibility that the Parry-Romberg syndrome is related to known autoimmune disorders of the soft tissue (e.g., linear scleroderma) and Rasmussen's syndrome. There are some re

Calcinosis cutis in systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report and review of the published work.

Calcinosis cutis is a common clinical feature of dermatomyositis and scleroderma but rarely reported in association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Calcinosis cutis in SLE occurs without calcium and phosphorus metabolic abnormalities and may be localized or generalized. The pathophysiology remains unclear and no effective therapy is currently available. We report a 30-year-old woman with a 13-year history of SLE who developed multiple calcinosis cutis around both knees and we review the relevant published work.

Juvenile Scleroderma.

Localised scleroderma and systemic sclerosis are rare chronic fibrosing disorders seen in children, and are collectively referred to as Juvenile Scleroderma. Histopathology of the two forms is non-distinct but they differ in terms of vasculopathy, internal organ involvement, morbidity and mortality. Raynaud's phenomenon with digital tip ulcers is considered hallmark of systemic sclerosis. Quality of life gets greatly affected by these diseases. Early identification in the inflammatory phase of the disease, effective treatment and strict surveillance remain crucial for better outcomes. Emerging
