Comparison of Blood Glucose Values Used for Impending Non-Severe Hypoglycemia Management with Corresponding Continuous Glucose Monitoring Data in Type 1 Diabetes: A Secondary Analysis of the REVERSIBLE Trial.

BACKGROUND: To assess continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data corresponding to blood glucose (BG) values used for impending non-severe (NS) hypoglycemia management in people living with type 1 diabetes (PwTID). METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of the REVERSIBLE trial, a three-arm open-label crossover study assessing the efficacy of 16 g oral carbohydrates (CHO) for preventing NS hypoglycemia at different BG levels: <72 mg/dL (4 mmol/L, level 1), ≤80 mg/dL (4.5 mmol/L), or ≤90mg/dL (5.0 mmol/L). CGM data (DexcomG6®) were compared with BG to assess their variances and mean absolute r

Host-derived Delta-like Canonical Notch ligand-1 in sepsis and septic shock: Infection site, pathogens and disease severity matter - Secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition and many biomarkers for diagnosing and treatment guidance have been investigated in recent years. However, new ones are emerging almost daily, only few markers with diagnostic value have passed to entered clinical routine application. Delta-like canonical Notch ligand-1 (DLL-1) seems to be a potential contributor in the differentiation between sepsis and non-septic infection. Its role for clinical application and potential septic outcome prediction is yet unclear. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of data and DLL-1 measurements from

Time from injury to hip-fracture surgery in low-income and middle-income regions: a secondary analysis of data from the International Orthopaedic Multicentre Study in Fracture Care (INORMUS).

BACKGROUND: Globally, fall-related injuries are a substantial problem, and 80% of fatal falls occur in low-income and middle-income countries. We aimed to measure time from injury to hip-fracture surgery in people aged 50 years or older living in low-income and middle-income regions, as well as to measure the proportion of patients with surgical stabilisation of their hip fracture within 72 h of admission to hospital and to identify risk factors associated with surgical delay. METHODS: For this secondary analysis, we analysed data collected from Africa, Latin America, China, India, and Asia (

Water, sanitation, and hygiene-specific risk factors of recent diarrheal episodes in children aged under 5 years: analysis of secondary data from the multiple indicator cluster survey (MICS 2019).

OBJECTIVES: Access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene, collectively called WASH, is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of public health. However, inadequate WASH practices and environments significantly contribute to the global burden of diarrheal diseases, particularly, in children aged under 5 years. Inadequate WASH conditions are the primary drivers of various infectious diseases, including cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. METHODS: We conducted secondary data analysis using the 2019 Zimbabwe Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey to investigate the spec…

Prevalence of smoking and smokeless tobacco use during breastfeeding: A cross-sectional secondary data analysis based on 0.32 million sample women in 78 low-income and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Smoking and smokeless tobacco use during the postpartum period is well studied in high-income countries, whereas low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) lack evidence. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study we used data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) conducted in 78 LMICs between January 2010 and December 2019 to study tobacco use among 0.32 million sample lactating women. Age-standardized prevalence of smoking and smokeless tobacco use was estimated and presented with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) for 78 LMICs.

Demographic, socio-economic, obstetric, and behavioral factors associated with small-and large-for-gestational-age from a prospective, population-based pregnancy cohort in rural Nepal: a secondary data analysis.

BACKGROUND: In South Asia, a third of babies are born small-for-gestational age (SGA). The risk factors are well described in the literature, but many studies are in high-and-middle income countries or measure SGA on facility births only. There are fewer studies that describe the prevalence of risk factors for large-for-gestational age (LGA) in low-income countries. We aim to describe the factors associated with SGA and LGA in a population-based cohort of pregnant women in rural Nepal. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of community-based trial on neonatal oil massage (22,545 women co…

Burden of malaria in pregnancy among adolescent girls compared to adult women in 5 sub-Saharan African countries: A secondary individual participant data meta-analysis of 2 clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is among the top causes of death in adolescent girls (10 to 19 years) globally. Adolescent motherhood is associated with increased risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. The interaction of malaria, adolescence, and pregnancy is especially relevant in malaria endemic areas, where rates of adolescent pregnancy are high. However, data on burden of malaria among adolescent girls are limited. This study aimed at investigating whether adolescent girls were at a greater risk of experiencing malaria-related outcomes in pregnancy-parasitaemia and clinical disease-than adult
