Effectiveness of Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises (SOVTEs) in Patients with Dysphonia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dysphonia is a disorder characterized by an alteration in the overall quality of the voice which reduces quality of life. Therefore, we assessed the effectiveness of SOVTEs in the management of dysfunctional and organic dysphonia for acoustic, perceptual-auditive, aerodynamic parameters and self-perception of the disease. METHODS: a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Findings were reported according to the PRISMA statement. Five databases were searched for RCTs and non- or quasi-RCTs. Studies were independently assessed using the Cochrane Risk of bias (RoB) and RO

The behavioral presentation of an individual with a disordered sense of self.

There is increased recognition that the brain processes a "sense of self" (best understood as a sense of "mineness") in the right hemisphere association area and which can be distorted due to neurologic injury. Although there are numerous descriptions of types of disorders of the self (e.g., asomatognosia, anosognosia, mirror misidentification disorder, Capgras syndrome, schizophrenia), there are few descriptions of the subjective experiences of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who experience a reduced sense of self. This article presents a longitudinal case study of a woman in he

Do Genital Cosmetic Procedures Improve Women's Self-Esteem? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The popularity of genital cosmetic procedures in women is increasing. These procedures are often assumed and promoted as having a positive effect on women's psychological well-being, particularly their self-esteem. Empirical support for these claims is lacking. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the impact of genital cosmetic procedures on self-esteem in women. METHODS: The authors performed a systematic literature review of MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE, Ebase, EMBASE, OVID, CINAHL, Cochrane, PsycINFO, and PubMed to identify articles

Resilience, trauma, and hopelessness: protective or triggering factor for the development of psychopathology among migrants?

BACKGROUND: Recently, many studies have investigated the role of migration on mental health. Nonetheless, only few focused on the consequences of childhood trauma, hopelessness, and resilience on migrants' psychopathology, including psychiatric disorders and symptoms. METHOD: 119 migrants were recruited between May 2017 and April 2018, among those applying for assessment to the Mental Health Operational Unit of the National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty (NIHMP) in Rome, Italy. Assessment included the following: Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Sc

Voice modulation, self-perception and motor branch of the superior laryngeal nerve.

OBJECTIVES: Vocal morbidity resulting from damage to the motor branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) after endocrine surgery is well known, but diagnosis is often delayed. The present study aimed to quantify these vocal changes acoustically (main objective), and correlate this with the vocal complaints of patients with suspected SLN motor impairment (secondary objective). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty females patients with suspected injury of the SLN cricothyroid branch (CT-) were compared to 30 patients without postoperative vocal impairment (CT+) and to 30 control subjects. Mean, mini

Co-opting the Body of the Identified Other: The Hysterization of Otherness in Relation to Self.

As transsexual and transgender identity and experience have emerged from the outer boundaries of sexual identity and have become part of mainstream awareness of the full potential for sexual self-definition, cultural response has ranged widely. Responses include acceptance and approval; moderate levels of anxiety concerning perceptions of gender, sexual identity, and sex; obsessive fascination with the "otherness," the "not-me-ness" of those identifying as transsexual or transgender; the desire of non-trans-people to co-opt the experience of trans-people without personal risk; alarm at the rei

Insight across mental disorders: A multifaceted metacognitive phenomenon.

There is now general agreement that lack of insight is not merely a fundamental aspect of delusions and hallucinations, or just a symptom of psychotic disorders but rather a multi-dimensional construct. Several different components of insight have been proposed and empirically examined during the last three decades, such as the ability to recognize that one has a mental illness, the capacity to relabel unusual mental events as pathological, the specific attribution of one's symptoms to having a mental illness, awareness of illness' consequences, and compliance with treatment.1 Insight impairme

Revisiting formulation: part 2. The task of addressing the concept of the unique individual. Remediating problems with formulation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to review the theoretical basis of addressing the concept of the unique individual, one of the tasks prescribed in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Formulation guidelines for candidates, and to propose a rational basis for remediation of the problems that many candidates and other professionals have with formulation. CONCLUSION: The difficulty that RANZCP candidates and other mental health professionals have in producing a completely integrated account of an individual is multi-determined, but is partly explainable

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 'Systems for Social Processes' in eating disorders.

Social and emotional problems have been implicated in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (ED). This paper reviews the facets of social processing in ED according to the NIMH Research and Domain Criteria (NIMH RDoC) 'Systems for Social Processes' framework. Embase, Medline, PsycInfo and Web of Science were searched for peer-reviewed articles published by March 2013. One-hundred and fifty four studies measuring constructs of: attachment, social communication, perception and understanding of self and others, and social dominance in people with ED, were identified. Eleven meta-ana

Loneliness and eating disorders.

This article examines the link between loneliness and eating disorders. This concept is evaluated through a systematic review of the literature that links loneliness and eating disorders and through a survey of themes connecting the 2 conditions. Eating disorders-including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and eating disorders that are not otherwise specified, which include binge eating disorder-are challenging health issues. Each of these diagnoses specifically relates to loneliness. This negative emotion contributes to and fuels eating disorder symptoms. Negative interpersonal relationships

Self-recognition deficits in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations: a meta-analysis of the literature.

Theories about auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia suggest that these experiences occur because patients fail to recognize thoughts and mental events as self-generated. Different theoretical models have been proposed about the cognitive mechanisms underlying auditory hallucinations. Regardless of the cognitive model being tested, however, experimental designs are almost identical in that they require a judgment regarding whether an action was self-originated or not. The aim of the current study was to integrate all available literature for a meta-analysis on this topic and reach conclusio

[Paranoia and Asperger syndrome].

Paranoia in patients diagnosed with Asperger syndrome in adulthood is discussed and illustrated with the help of a case study. Impaired mentalisation, characteristic for Asperger disorder, influences the way an individual experiences life, making him more vulnerable for the development of delusional beliefs.

Psychosocial effects of vitiligo.

A limited number of studies have paid attention to the psychosocial well-being of patients affected with vitiligo. We review the psychosocial effects of vitiligo, how patients deal with them and the psychiatric morbidity in vitiligo patients. Given the appreciable comorbidity, it is important to consider these observations in the management of patients, for example in patient-physician interaction but also in treatment strategies and evaluation of treatments. The effects of the psychological state on the disease itself together with the potential therapeutic implications are reviewed. Based on

Protective and damaging effects of stress mediators: central role of the brain.

The mind involves the whole body and two-way communication between the brain and the cardiovascular, immune, and other systems via neural and endocrine mechanisms. Stress is a condition of the mind-body interaction, and a factor in the expression of disease that differs among individuals. It is notjust the dramatic stressful events that exact their toll, but rather the many events of daily life that elevate and sustain activities of physiological systems and cause sleep deprivation, overeating, and other health-damaging behaviors, producing the feeling of being "stressed out." Over time, this

When asking "why" does not hurt. Distinguishing rumination from reflective processing of negative emotions.

Two experiments examined the psychological operations that enable individuals to process negative emotions and experiences without increasing negative affect. In Study 1, type of self-perspective (self-immersed vs. self-distanced) and type of emotional focus (what vs. why) were experimentally manipulated following the recall of an anger-eliciting interpersonal experience. A why focus on emotions from a self-distanced perspective (distanced-why strategy) was expected to enable "cool," reflective processing of emotions, in which individuals can focus on their experience without reactivating exce
