Power Failure of Mitochondria and Oxidative Stress in Neurodegeneration and Its Computational Models.

The brain needs more energy than other organs in the body. Mitochondria are the generator of vital power in the living organism. Not only do mitochondria sense signals from the outside of a cell, but they also orchestrate the cascade of subcellular events by supplying adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP), the biochemical energy. It is known that impaired mitochondrial function and oxidative stress contribute or lead to neuronal damage and degeneration of the brain. This mini-review focuses on addressing how mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are associated with the pathogenesis of neuro

Myocardial remote ischemic preconditioning: from cell biology to clinical application.

Remote ischemic preconditioning (rIPC) is a cardioprotective phenomenon where brief periods of ischemia followed by reperfusion of one organ/tissue can confer subsequent protection against ischemia/reperfusion injury in other organs, such as the heart. It involves activation of humoral, neural or systemic communication pathways inducing different intracellular signals in the heart. The main purpose of this review is to summarize the possible mechanisms involved in the rIPC cardioprotection, and to describe recent clinical trials to establish the efficacy of these strategies in cardioprotection

Physiology and Pathophysiology of Oxygen Sensitivity.

Oxygen is an essential requirement for metabolism in mammals and many other animals. Therefore, pathways that sense a reduction in available oxygen are critical for organism survival. Higher mammals developed specialized organs to detect and respond to changes in O2 content to maintain gas homeostasis by balancing oxygen demand and supply. Here, we summarize the various oxygen sensors that have been identified in mammals (carotid body, aortic bodies, and astrocytes), by what mechanisms they detect oxygen and the cellular and molecular aspects of their function on control of respiratory and cir

Relapsing poly(peri)chondritis diagnosed by biopsy during inflammatory free interval: destructive polychondritis versus fibrosing perichondritis.

Relapsing poly(peri)chondritis (RP) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by recurrent inflammatory episodes of cartilaginous structures and the involvement of special sense organs. The diagnostic criteria of McAdam 1976 include at least three of the following criteria: a) bilateral auricular chondritis, b) nonerosive sero-negative inflammatory polyarthritis, c) nasal chondritis, d) ocular inflammation, e) respiratory tract chondritis, f) audiovestibular chondritis. A cartilage biopsy according to these criteria is not mandatory. Nevertheless, unclear cases still remain as there is a b…

Recent advances in MXene, MOF, and COF based NH3 gas sensors for environmental monitoring: sensing mechanisms, analytical performance, and future perspectives.

The increasing use of ammonia (NH3) in agriculture, refrigeration, chemical processing, and energy applications has increased concerns over its toxicity and corrosiveness. This suggest the need for sensitive NH3 monitoring under practical conditions. This review critically evaluates recent advances in MXene, metal-organic framework (MOF), and covalent organic framework (COF) based NH3 sensors. MXenes are promising for room-temperature sensing because of their high conductivity and efficient charge transport, but oxidation, restacking, and humidity interference continue to hinder stable and rep

Covalent Organic Framework as Selective Fluorescence Sensors for Cancer Inducing Volatile Organic Compounds.

Certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, acetone, and ethanol, are overexpressed in some terminal diseases like cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, etc. Therefore, high-precision detection and quantification of VOCs is imperative for early diagnosis of such detrimental diseases. Non-invasive and accurate fluorescence-based detection of such analytes has garnered widespread attention. The inherent luminescent properties of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), resulting from their extensive π-conjugation, have made them suitable for sensing applications. Structural tunability a

Bioresorbable metal-free molecular magnets enable untethered organ monitoring.

Metal-free molecular magnets differ from conventional magnetic devices that predominantly rely on metallic magnets as these metal-free materials may offer biocompatibility and bioresorbability. However, existing molecular materials lack the ferromagnetic strength required for high-fidelity sensing at clinically relevant tissue depths. Here we introduce a bioresorbable metal-free molecular magnet derived from graphitic carbon nitride, combining metallic-level ferromagnetism with full bioresorbability. De-nitrogenation creates spin centres coupled through a reconstructed π-σ conjugated framework

A Biomimetic Solvatochromic Chip With Optimized Chemical Diversity for On-Site Liquid Identification.

Colorimetric sensors for instant and on-the-spot identification of organic liquids have been actively developed across diverse fields such as chemical hazard inspection, manufacturing process monitoring, and beverage safety. Multi-target sensing scenarios often necessitate large-scale sensor arrays, which inevitably increase the fabrication complexity, complicate visual interpretation, and exacerbate data redundancy. Here, we present a biomimetic photonic-gustatory chip (BiPC) comprising a polyacrylate-based solvatochromic disk (PSD) array. The elastic photonic crystal PSDs generate distinct c

Real-time sensing-integrated organoid-on-a-chip platforms: Technological progress and emerging biomedical applications.

As micro-scale 3D tissues self-organized from stem cells, organoids can highly recapitulate the cellular composition and complex spatial architecture of human organs, establishing themselves as pivotal physiological models in biomedical research. Although organoids offer significant advantages in mimicking human physiological structures, traditional monitoring methodologies predominantly rely on destructive endpoint assays, which fail to capture the transient fluctuations inherent in biological processes. To overcome this limitation, we propose the sensing-integrated organoid-on-a-chip, a fron

Multimodal smart suture for dynamic postoperative wound monitoring.

Postoperative wound management remains challenging, owing to the lack of tools for continuous, localized, and quantitative assessment of wound inflammation. To address this limitation, we advance a device-level integration strategy that enables localized multimodal monitoring within a suturable platform. We develop a multifunctional smart suture by engineering a metal-organic framework (MOF) layer onto a conductive thermoelectric (TE) fiber. This unique structure integrates bifunctional electrochemical and thermoelectric sensing on a single platform for real-time monitoring of wound healing dy

Functional Infectious Nanoparticle Detector: Finding Viruses by Detecting Their Host Entry Functions Using Organic Bioelectronic Devices.

Emerging viruses will continue to be a threat to human health and wellbeing into the foreseeable future. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the necessity for rapid viral sensing and inhibitor screening in mitigating viral spread and impact. Here, we present a platform that uses a label-free electronic readout as well as a dual capability of optical (fluorescence) readout to sense the ability of a virus to bind and fuse with a host cell membrane, thereby sensing viral entry. This approach introduces a hitherto unseen level of specificity by distinguishing fusion-competent viruses from fusion-incomp

Bioinspired Low-Power Mechanical Sensing Technologies.

Bioinspired low-power mechanical sensing technology offers a promising solution to address the escalating energy consumption challenges faced by conventional sensing systems. Traditional mechanical sensing architectures, relying on dense sensor arrays and continuous data acquisition, suffer from substantial power consumption and limited long-term deployability. In contrast, biological mechanosensory systems achieve high sensitivity, robustness, and adaptive intelligence with minimal energy expenditure through structure-enabled signal acquisition, efficient neural processing, and closed-loop ac

From Sensing Mechanisms to System Co-Design: Graphene-Based Sensors and Readout Circuits.

Graphene-based materials combining outstanding electrical, thermal, optical and mechanical properties have demonstrated remarkable potential for high-performance sensing across optoelectronic, molecular, mechanical, magnetic and thermal applications. However, practical graphene sensing often involves relatively small stimulus-induced changes in diverse electrical quantities, requiring dedicated readout electronics for accurate detection and conditioning. Existing reviews rarely treat sensing mechanisms and readout architectures in a unified system co-design context, which leaves a gap between

Extracellular proteins as enterobacterial thermometers.

Biological thermometers are cellular components or structures which sense increasing temperatures, interaction of the thermometer and the thermal stress bringing about the switching-on of inducible responses, with gradually enhanced levels of response induction following gradually increasing temperatures. In enterobacteria, for studies of such thermometers, generally induction of heat shock protein (HSP) synthesis has been examined, with experimental studies aiming to establish (often indirectly) how the temperature changes which initiate HSP synthesis are sensed; numerous other processes and

Localization of epidermal growth factor precursor in tooth and lung during embryonic mouse development.

The murine epidermal growth factor (EGF) precursor is a 1217 amino acid protein which contains mature EGF (amino acid residues 977-1029) as well as eight EGF-like repeats. Although the highest levels of EGF are found in the adult male mouse submandibular gland, the results of in situ hybridization studies and mRNA analyses suggest that EGF precursor mRNA is synthesized in several adult mouse tissues including the lung and the incisor. To determine if EGF precursor gene expression is intrinsic to the developmental program for either embryonic tooth or lung organogenesis, sense and antisense oli
