OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reproductive outcome after hysteroscopic metroplasty.
STUDY DESIGN: We analysed the reproductive outcome of 69 patients, with different degrees of septate uterus, undergoing hysteroscopic metroplasty in the outpatient infertility clinic of Naples 'Federico II' University. Of the 69 patients, 48 had a history of recurrent abortion while 21 had a primary infertility. In all cases the procedure was performed by means of the resectoscope.

BACKGROUND: Women who suffer recurrent miscarriage are a heterogeneous group. Known causes include genetic and endocrine abnormalities, anti-phospholipid syndrome and autoimmune disease. Congenital uterine abnormalities (CUAs) such as bicornuate, unicornuate, septate and arcuate uterine abnormalities are known to negatively impact on pregnancy rates, and to increase the miscarriage rates of genetically normal pregnancies. A case of simultaneous uterine and renal cell carcinoma in an elderly woman who had a septate vagina, double cervix, uterus didelphys, and a single kidney secondary to contralateral renal agenesis is reported. She was treated for a period of 8 months, first with pelvic irradiation followed by total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and subsequently with heminephrectomy. From 1984 to 1989, 805 infertile women were examined hysterosalpingographically and 127 (15.8%) proved to have one of the congenital uterine anomalies. The control group consisted of 45 fertile women with the anatomically normal form of the uterine cavity as was checked by the HSG method.
