BACKGROUND: To evaluate the frequency of Blastocystis hominis parasitation and to ascertain its role as an intestinal a prospective study during 18 months pathogen has been carried out.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included 2,039 patients, which were classified in three groups (asymptomatic [group A], with suspicion of parasitosis [group B], with diarrhoea [group C]). In all cases a coproparasitological study was performed. In the group C the presence of non-parasitic enteropathogens was also investigated. In patients with B. hominis in the absence of other pathogens clinical and epidemiol

A review of laboratory isolates and notifications of meningococcal disease in the Cork area was conducted for the period 1989-93. The study aimed to describe the epidemiology of meningococcal disease in the area. The incidence of meningococcal disease is high in the Cork area and has been increasing since 1991 with a peak incidence of laboratory confirmed cases of 6.5 per 100,000 in 1993. In the five year review period 113 notifications of meningococcal disease were identified of which 61 (54%) were laboratory confirmed and 52 (46%) were clinically diagnosed only. All laboratory confirmed case

Histologic and quantitative techniques were compared in an evaluation of the intensity of Pneumocystis carinii infection in common shrews (Sorex araneus) at Espoo, southern Finland, from September 1992 to May 1993. The histological scores were comparable to the results of the cyst count technique. The number of P. carinii cysts found in common shrews was low compared to those reported by others in clinically ill laboratory rats. The inflammatory changes detected in the lung sections had no significant relation to the presence of P. carinii infection.

The convulsive disorders are among the more frequently occurring neurologic disorders of childhood, affecting more than 4% of all children. The most frequently occurring disorder, febrile convulsions, shows wide geographic variation and is usually benign. Children with epilepsy (which affects about 1% of the population by age 20) generally have an excellent prognosis. The small proportion of patients whose epilepsy is not controlled after two years of treatment should be considered for alternative therapies.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of arthritis in patients with rubella in an Asian compared to a Western setting.
METHODS: During a widespread outbreak of rubella in Kyoto, Japan, 29 patients with rubella who visited a general medical clinic in that city were investigated for arthritic symptoms.
RESULTS: Among 9 women with rubella infection, 3 (33%) had acute polyarthritis. Among 20 men with the infection, 2 (10%) had arthritis. Of the 5 patients who developed rubella arthritis, 4 were over 18 years old. Recurrence of arthritis was not seen in any individuals.
CONCLUSION: The high in

This article calls attention to the importance of more carefully defining femaleness and maleness and more fully acknowledging the existence of mixed-sex people. Mixed-sex people are defined as people with at least one female and one male characteristic, where female or male characteristics are defined as characteristics that are possessed by no more than roughly half the population (the distribution criterion) and either play a clear role in reproduction (the reproduction criterion) or are very highly correlated across all cultures with characteristics that meet both the distribution and repr

PREMISE: Angiosperms range in sexual system from hermaphroditism through gynodioecy and androdioecy to dioecy. Trioecy, where females and males coexist with hermaphrodites, is rare. Recently, trioecy was documented in hexaploid populations of the wind-pollinated herb Mercurialis annua in Spain.
METHODS: We surveyed the frequency of males, hermaphrodites, and females in M. annua across its distribution in the Iberian Peninsula, tracked sex-ratio variation in several populations over consecutive generations, and assessed evidence for pollen limitation. In a common garden, we estimated male, fem

Differences between biological sex, gender identity, and their impact on health may have significant implications for the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of several diseases, including allergies. Asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR), atopic dermatitis (AD), and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) have different prevalences and different risk factors in infancy. Although boys present allergies more often in childhood, it quickly changes during girls' sexual development, leading to lifelong female predominance of allergic diseases. This can be explained by the influence of sexual hormones, di

Atrial fibrillation is the most common supraventricular arrhythmia. Its prevalence increases with age and preferentially affects male patients. Over 75 years of age, however, female patients being more prevalent, the absolute number of patients affected is similar between sexes. Despite this, few data are available in the literature concerning sex-related differences in atrial fibrillation patients. The present systematic review therefore considers comorbidities, referring symptoms, quality of life, pharmacological approaches and trans-catheter ablation in female rather than in male atrial fib

BACKGROUND: Current data suggest that 30%-50% of patients with syncope leave the hospital without a defined etiology of their syncopal event. Recent studies have shown significant differences in both presentation and therapy in women with coronary disease and congestive heart failure.
METHODS: To assess the impact of sex on the frequency of syncope and the rate of identifying a specific etiology among elderly patients who present to the emergency department (ED), a retrospective chart review was performed during a 1-year period. Consecutive patients older than 65 years presenting with syncope

Women have generally worse outcomes after myocardial infarction (MI) compared to men. The reasons for these disparities are multifactorial. At the beginning is the notion-widespread in the community and health care providers-that women are at low risk for MI. This can impact on primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in women, with lower use of preventative therapies and lifestyle counselling. It can also lead to delays in presentation in the event of an acute MI, both at the patient and health care provider level. This is of particular concern in the case of ST elevation MI (STEMI), wher

BACKGROUND: Danon disease (DD) is a rare X-linked autophagic vacuolar myopathy, characterized by high penetrance and severe cardiomyopathy. Because of its rarity, the natural history (NH) is uncertain.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe disease variability and outcomes through a systematic review of all published DD cases.
METHODS: Among 83 manuscripts in MEDLINE and EMBASE on DD cases published until October 2017, we identified 146 patients with positive genetic testing for DD or positive muscle biopsy in a relative of a genetically diagnosed proband.
RESULTS: 56 females and 90 males were id

There is growing epidemiologic data demonstrating sex differences with respect to prevalence and progression of airway diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF-related bronchiectasis. In asthma, for example, young boys have increased exacerbations and higher morbidity than girls which distinctly reverses after adolescence and into adulthood. In COPD, a disease that was historically considered an illness of men, the number of women dying per year is now greater than in men. Finally, women with CF-related bronchiectasis have a decr

BACKGROUND: Lacrosse is a fast growing youth sport in the United States. Although there have been published studies examining injuries associated with lacrosse, significantly less research has been conducted in high school lacrosse players than in older lacrosse players. The objective of this study was to compare high school lacrosse injury rates and patterns by type of athletic activity (ie, competition vs practice) and sex.
HYPOTHESIS: Lacrosse injury rates and patterns differ by type of athletic activity and sex.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: Using the High Schoo

PURPOSE: To characterize gender differences in the Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus (CLEK) Study.
DESIGN: Observational, longitudinal study.
METHODS: A total of 1209 subjects at 16 clinics. For eye-specific categorical variables, the number of eyes per subject with the characteristic was counted. For eye-specific continuous variables, the mean of both eyes was calculated. Multivariate linear (for continuous outcomes) and logistic (for categorical outcomes) regression models were created for each baseline characteristic with statistically significant (P < or = .05) differe

The prevalence of reading difficulties is typically higher in males than females in both referred and research-identified samples, and the ratio of males to females is greater in more affected samples. To explore possible gender differences in reading performance, we analysed data from 1133 twin pairs in which at least one member of each pair had a school history of reading problems and from 684 twin pairs from a comparison sample with no reading difficulties. Although the difference between the average scores of males and females in these two samples was very small, the variance of reading pe

The study evaluated the sex distribution of major isolated malformations and common trisomies among a large and geographically varied sample. Eighteen registries from 24 countries contributed cases, which were centrally reviewed and classified in three clinical types as isolated, associated, or syndromic. We selected cases of 26 major defects (n = 108,534); trisomy 21, 18, and 13 (n = 30,114); other syndromes (n = 2,898); and multiple congenital anomalies (n = 24,197), for a total of 165,743 cases. We observed a significant deviation of sex distribution (compared to a sex ratio of 1.06 or male…

This paper outlines the general characteristics and results obtained with heart transplantation in Spain after including the data for the year 2000. In the course of last year 353 transplants were performed; along with the operations performed since 1984, this represents an overall total of 3445 transplants. The year 2000 was the first year in which the limit of 350 yearly operations was exceeded. The average clinical profile of the Spanish heart transplant patient corresponds to a male of about 50 years of age, with an A blood group, coronary disease that is not amenable to revascularization,
