An outbreak of diarrhoeal disease attributed to Shigella sonnei.

An outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred in a village on the Island of Crete, with 1479 inhabitants. One hundred and thirty-eight symptomatic patients from 57 different families were examined. Thirty percent of children under 12 years were affected compared with 4% of adolescents and adults (P < 0.0001). Thirty-five out of 105 stool cultures (33%) grew Shigella sonnei. Thirty-four isolates had the same susceptibility pattern and were sensitive to ampicillin, while one was resistant to this antibiotic. Thirty-three isolates had the same plasmid profile. Based on epidemiologic and environmental f…

[Shigellosis in the USSR: the biochemical picture of Shigella sonnei].

The article deals with original data characterizing the biochemical picture of S. sonnei circulating in the USSR in 1983-1985. Sub-biovars IIe, IIg and Ia have been shown to prevail practically in all regions, irrespective of the intensity of functioning of the centralized alimentary and chronic water routes of transmission of shigellae. These sub-biovars most frequently cause significant alimentary outbreaks of Sonne dysentery transmitted with milk. Doubts are expressed concerning the importance of the immunological factor in the formation of the biochemical picture of S. sonnei. The necessit…

[Shigella sonnei. An epidemic in a day-care institution].

Epidemics caused by dysentery bacteria among children and adults in day-institutions are rare in Denmark. The course of an epidemic of this type is reviewed. Thirty children and six adults went on holiday to a deserted farmer's cottage under primitive conditions in the southern Swedish woods. Immediately prior to this holiday, two of the adults had had serious gastrointestinal infections during a hiking trip in South America. Shigella sonnei was subsequently demonstrated in the stools from a total of 11 children but not in the adults. Three cases of intrafamilial infection occurred. Prior to c…

[Biological properties of bacteria of the species Shigella flexneri].

Some biological properties of S. flexneri have been studied. The strains of this bacterial species have been shown to produce DNAase in 98.8 +/- 0.77% of cases and RNAase in 97.4 +/- 1.5% of cases. The capacity for the positive reaction with Congo red as early as after 24-hour incubation in the thermostat has proved to be characteristic of S. flexneri (91.1 +/- 3.6%). If stored at 4 degrees C in semiliquid agar, S. flexneri cultures have been found to retain their capacity for producing the above-mentioned enzymes as long as 10-13 years. All S. flexneri serovars under study, with the exception

Nutritional requirements of shigellae for growth in a minimal medium.

Most (about 81%) of the clinical isolates of shigellae that were tested failed to grow in a minimal medium. Of the auxotrophic isolates belonging to the four Shigella species, 98% grew in a minimal medium containing methionine, nicotinic acid, and tryptophan. The combination of methionine and tryptophan appears to be an obligatory requirement for Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 strains, while the combination of nicotinic acid and tryptophan appears to be obligatory for serotype 2. Requirements which varied in other isolates were, however, genetically stable, indicating that the auxotypes may b…

[Dynamics of Shigella interaction with the epithelium in the infection process].

The study of the adhesion of Shigella flexneri to intestinal mucosal explants from human postabortion fetuses, used as an experimental model, has revealed that the process of interaction between the infective agent and the epithelium develops in accordance with Langmuir's equation of the adsorption isotherm. The specific biological feature of the adhesive interaction between bacteria and the mucous membrane is the fact that the effective adhesion of microbes is possible only in case of their high concentration on the surface of the mucous membrane. In case of their low concentration in the par…

Colicine production as an epidemiological marker for Shigella sonnei.

The reliability of colicine typing of Shigella sonnei: as an epidemiological marker has been investigated. Strains from 13 of 110 excretors showed variation in type as determined by typing serial isolates and in 14 of 106 epidemics there was a lack of uniformity in typing results. The simultaneous presence of two types was found in 11.4% of patients. In vitro variation was seen after 10 days in 6.8% of isolates from 44 stools; variation had risen to 9% when isolates were re-examined after one month. These results suggest that restrictions should be placed on the use of colicine typing as an ep…

Involvement of a plasmid in the invasive ability of Shigella flexneri.

Representative Shigella flexneri strains were studied to determine whether plasmids are involved in their virulence. All invasive S. flexneri strains, irrespective of serotype, were found to harbor a large plasmid of approximately 140 megadaltons in size, although some strains carried additional plasmid species. Spontaneous variants of strains of serotypes 1, 2, and 5 had lost this 140-megadalton plasmid and had concomitantly become avirulent, i.e., could neither invade HeLa cell monolayers nor produced keratoconjunctivitis in guinea pigs. To monitor plasmid transfer, the 140-megadalton plasmi…

Cardiovascular effects of Shigella sonnei endotoxin in the rat.

Shigella sonnei lipopolysaccharide (LPS), either in phase I (extracted from the smooth strains), or in phase II (extracted from the rough strains) reduced mean arterial pressure and heart rate following a 640 micrograms/Kg intravenous (iv) bolus injection in the urethane-anesthetized rat. Lower doses were without significant effects. Escherichia coli LPS (640 micrograms/Kg iv) produced a greater and more prolonged hypotension, however the negative chronotropic effect was less severe. The iv injection of the lipid A moiety of the LPS molecule of Shigella sonnei resulted in a more pronounced hyp…

Patterns of Shigella infection in families in rural Bangladesh.

To assess the mode of transmission of Shigella infection in rural Bangladesh, questionnaire and culture surveys were conducted in baris (neighborhoods) where persons with diarrhea associated with Shigella infection and index controls with non-Shigella diarrhea lived. Nineteen percent of persons in Shigella baris and 7% of persons in control baris were infected during the survey periods (P less than 0.001). The prevalence of Shigella infection was highest for children 1-9 years of age and for females than 39 years and was not related to socioeconomic status, family size or household crowding. U…

[Evaluation of new media for the isolation of salmonella and shigella].

Two hundred stool specimens were studied by using direct and indirect methods on XLD, HE, EMB and SS culture media. The results were consistent with the previous studies. As the media currently used in Turkey seem inadequate in the bacteriological diagnosis of salmonella and shigella infections, the introduction of the more satisfactory media such as XLD and HE is suggested for routine use.

Resistance to antibiotics of Shigella strains isolated in Somalia.

The resistance to antibiotics of 240 Shigella strains isolated in Somalia from 1973 to 1976 was studied. Many strains, particularly those of Shigella dysenteriae type 1, were found to be resistant to more than one drug. In view of their resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, tetracycline, and sulfonamides, it is suggested that polymyxin B or M sulfate - which have proved to be effective in vivo - should be used for the treatment of clinically typical cases of bacillary dysentery.
