PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the influences of high-heeled shoe (HHS) parameters on gait cycle, center of pressure (COP) trajectory, and plantar pressure in young females.
METHODS: Twenty healthy adult females were recruited to participate in this study. Subjects walked on a treadmill at a fixed speed (1 m/s). Overall, six pairs of HHSs were evaluated, presenting two heel types (thin and thick) and three different heel heights (low: 3 cm, medium: 6 cm, and high: 8.2 cm). Subjects also wore flat shoes (heel height: 0.2 cm) as the control group.
RESULTS: The gait cycle, COP paramet…

High-heeled shoes are associated with instability and falling, leading to injuries such as fracture and ankle sprain. This study investigated the effects of habitual wearing of high-heeled shoes on the body's center of mass (COM) motion relative to the center of pressure (COP) during gait. Fifteen female experienced wearers and 15 matched controls walked with high-heeled shoes (7.3cm) while kinematic and ground reaction force data were measured and used to calculate temporal-distance parameters, joint moments, COM-COP inclination angles (IA) and the rate of IA changes (RCIA). Compared with ine…

This is the first known study to examine the relationship between high-heel use and bone mineral density (BMD). Because women are disproportionately affected by osteoporosis, it is important to identify possible modifiable behaviors of women that may adversely affect bone health. Many studies have shown changes in body mechanics when wearing high-heeled shoes in comparison to normal gait. Because the composition of bone changes according to mechanical load and muscle activity, this study investigates whether wearing high heels may alter BMD. Two hundred and twenty-one participants at a communi…

BACKGROUND: There is controversy in the literature with regards to the short-term effects of wearing footwear with motion control features on running mechanics and whether commercially available footwear with motion control features has extra benefits compared with non-commercially available motion control footwear. In this systematic review with meta-analysis, we investigated the effects of wearing commercially available and non-commercially available footwear with motion control features versus standard shoes applied during one experimental session on lower limb joint angles and moments duri…

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the influence of Advanced Footwear Technology (AFT) on biomechanical, muscle damage, metabolic and oxidative stress markers in experienced long-distance runners.
METHODS: Using a counter-balanced randomized experimental design with twelve tier 3 male runners, two AFTs were tested: Cloudboom Strike (CS) and Cloudboom Echo 3 (CE). All participants completed, in both conditions, a graded exercise test (GXT) to determine the VT1, followed by a prolonged effort test (60-min) at an intensity 10% above VT1. Finally a GXT to exhaustion to assess the changes in b

AIMS: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a predictor of foot ulcers and leads to sedentary behaviour. This comparative study evaluated gait and feasibility of a 20-minute fast walk, at 40-60% of cardiopulmonary capacity, in individuals with DPN wearing an offloading boot and a contralateral shoe balancer.
METHODS: Gait parameters were measured with inertial sensors on 32 individuals (group with DPN [n = 16], group with diabetes but without DPN [n = 9], and a group without diabetes/DPN [n = 7]). Feasibility was assessed by feedback on perceived effort and adverse events. Gait outcomes wer

This pilot study aimed to investigate postural adaptations in spinopelvic parameters on the sagittal plane following the use of high-heeled shoes over a prolonged period in a population of healthy young women. Thirty-four female participants were assessed using rasterstereography at three time points: standing barefoot (T1), immediately after wearing their own high-heeled shoes (T2), and after two consecutive hours of standing or walking while wearing the shoes (T3). The evaluation focused on trunk inclination, pelvic tilt, lumbar lordotic angle, and thoracic kyphotic angle. Participants were …

BACKGROUND: Different shoe design features can reduce peak plantar pressure to help prevent foot ulcers in people with diabetes. A carbon reinforcement of the shoe outsole to maximize bending stiffness is commonly applied in footwear practice, but its effect has not been studied to date.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the effect of a carbon shoe-outsole reinforcement on peak plantar pressure and walking comfort in people with diabetes at high risk of foot ulceration?
METHODS: In 24 high-risk people with diabetes, in-shoe regional peak pressures were measured during walking at a comfortable speed

IMPORTANCE: Multiple techniques for a more secure and stable anchoring of the foot of a total ossicular replacement prosthesis (TORP) on the footplate have been proposed. To address this issue, a technique was developed that fits a cartilage shoe into the oval niche to guide the base of the prosthesis into a preformed central perforation.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term results of the cartilage shoe technique used to anchor a titanium TORP on the stapes footplate in patients after type III tympanoplasty.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Medical record review of total ossiculoplasties

BACKGROUND: Many people with multiple sclerosis experience problems with walking, which can make daily activities difficult and often leads to falls. Foot sensation plays an important role in keeping the body balanced whilst walking; however, people with multiple sclerosis often have poor sensation on the soles of their feet. Wearing a specially designed shoe insole, which enhances plantar sensory information, could help people with multiple sclerosis to walk better. This study will explore whether long-term wear of a textured insole can improve walking in people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Female football (soccer) players are at increased risk for lower extremity injuries, yet prevention strategies remain based mostly on male athlete data. Modifiable extrinsic factors including footwear design and playing surface have not been well defined in youth female athletes. The Protect our Players (POP) pilot survey examined links between lower extremity injuries, footwear, and playing surfaces among youth female football players to guide future large-scale research.
HYPOTHESIS: Modifiable factors, including footwear design and playing surface, are associated with lower extr

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Tibia fractures are relatively common injuries that are accompanied with acute compartment syndrome in approximately 2% to 20% of cases. Although the shoe-lace technique, where vessel loops are threaded in a crisscross fashion and tightened daily, has been widely used, no studies have compared the shoe-lace technique with the conventional one. The aim of this study was to compare the shoe-lace technique with the conventional technique.
METHODS: We identified 359 consecutive patients with intramedullary nailed tibia fracture and complete medical records including outp

Fourteen children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy were evaluated wearing threedifferent ankle-foot orthoses and shoes alone. The ankle-foot orthoses included solid, articulated ankle, and posterior leaf-spring types. Evaluation measures included computerized gait analysis, Energy Efficiency Index data, and individual preference. Highly significant kinematic differences were found at the ankle with shoes alone approaching normative data and braces showing abnormal dorsiflexion. No significant differences, were found in velocity, cadence, stride length, or in the Energy Efficiency Index. Ei…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate relationships between static foot posture, dynamic plantar foot forces and knee pain in people with medial knee osteoarthritis (OA).
DESIGN: Data from 164 participants with symptomatic, moderate to severe radiographic medial knee OA were analysed. Knee pain was self-reported using a numerical rating scale (NRS; scores 0-10; higher scores worse) and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score pain subscale (KOOS; scores 0-100; lower scores worse). Static foot posture was assessed using clinical tests (foot posture index, foot mobility magnitude, navicular drop).
