Acute spontaneous atraumatic bilateral anterior dislocation of the shoulder joint with Hill-Sachs lesions: first reported case and review of literature.

The anatomy of the shoulder joint comprises a relatively large humeral head with a shallow glenoid cavity allowing a remarkable range of motion at the expense of inherent instability. Despite anterior shoulder dislocations being the most common type encountered, bilateral dislocations are rare and almost always posterior. The aetiology is usually direct or indirect trauma related to sports, seizures, electric shock or electroconvulsive therapy. We present the first reported case of atraumatic bilateral acute anterior shoulder dislocations with associated Hill-Sachs lesions in a young, fit and …

Evaluating Joint Position Sense With 3D Motion Capture System: The Effect of Muscle Activation Without a Reference Angle in Shoulder Movements.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Joint position sense (JPS) is frequently assessed using joint position reproduction (JPR); however, JPR has limitations, where reference angles are typically unavailable. This study aimed to examine the accuracy of achieving an angle corresponding to 50% of the elevation angle previously attained during shoulder flexion and abduction, without a reference angle. METHODS: Participants first performed shoulder flexion to an absolute target angle (set at 90°), and the actual angle achieved was recorded. A relative target angle, corresponding to 50% of the achieved angle, w

Cascade learning in multi-task encoder-decoder networks for concurrent bone segmentation and glenohumeral joint clinical assessment in shoulder CT scans.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that affects bones and cartilage, often leading to structural changes, including osteophyte formation, bone density loss, and the narrowing of joint spaces. Over time, this process may disrupt the glenohumeral (GH) joint functionality, requiring a targeted treatment. Various options are available to restore joint functions, ranging from conservative management to surgical interventions, depending on the severity of the condition. This work introduces an innovative deep learning framework to process shoulder CT scans. It features the semantic segmentat

Joint Preserving Treatment of Chronic Locked Posterior Shoulder Dislocation by Means of Combined Humeral Allograft Reconstruction and Posterior Glenoid Autograft Augmentation.

Chronic locked posterior shoulder dislocations are challenging to treat and often warrant total shoulder arthroplasty. While joint preservin … two metal screws. This treatment strategy resulted in a full range of motion and a centered stable shoulder joint at one-year follow-up. Therefore, the procedure of segmental reconstruction of the humeral head with a fresh-frozen allograft combined with a posterior glenoid augmentation with an iliac crest bone autograft is a joint-preserving treatment alternati …

A Comparison of Revision Rates for Osteoarthritis of Primary Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty to Primary Anatomic Shoulder Arthroplasty with a Cemented All-polyethylene Glenoid: Analysis from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry.

BACKGROUND: There has been decreased use of anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) because reverse TSA (rTSA) is increasingly being used for the same indications. Although short-term studies generally have not found survivorship differences between these implant designs, these studies are often small and their follow-up is limited to the short term. Likewise, the degree to which patient characteristics (such as gender, age, and American Society of Anesthesiologists [ASA] score) may or may not be associated with survivorship differences calls for larger and longer-term studies than is ofte

Arthroscopic removal of loose bodies in synovial chondromatosis of shoulder joint, unusual location of rare disease: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Synovial chondromatosis is a benign mono-articular arthropathy affecting synovial joints. It mostly affects knee joint, followed by hip, elbow and wrist and is rarely reported for shoulder joint. The exact pathogenesis is not known. Usual symptoms are pain, difficulty in movement due to mechanical obstruction. The classic treatment is arthrotomy, removal of chondromatoid loose bodies and synovectomy. With recent advances arthroscopic removal of the chondromatoid loose bodies is a good option with relatively better post op rehabilitation and faster recovery. CASE PRESENTATION: 20…

The prevalence of joint contractures, pressure sores, painful shoulder, other pain, falls, and depression in the year after a severely disabling stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Complications after stroke have been shown to impede rehabilitation, lead to poor functional outcome, and increase cost of care. This inception cohort study sought to investigate the prevalence of immobility-related complications during the first year after severely disabling stroke in relation to functional independence and place of residence. METHODS: Over a 7-month period, 600 stroke survivors were identified in the hospital through the Nottingham Stroke Register. Those who had a Barthel Index score <or=10 3 months poststroke and did not have a primary diagnosis of

Polyethylene glenospheres in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty have greater long-term implant survivorship than metallic glenospheres: A New Zealand Joint Registry Study.

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) is increasingly common and clinically effective. Conventional-bearing rTSA (CB-rTSA) employs a metallic glenosphere articulating with a polyethylene humeral liner. Inverted-bearing rTSA (IB-rTSA), using a polyethylene glenosphere with a metallic or ceramic humeral liner, was developed to eliminate polyethylene wear debris at the scapular neck and thereby reduce polyethylene-induced osteolysis and the severity of scapular notching. Comparative data on survivorship and patient-reported outcomes between these configurations remain limited. Th
