Evaluation of chronic orofacial pain and its relationship to the microvascular facial response in women with fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations suggest that central nervous system dysfunction and changes in peripheral blood microcirculation may explain the symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). OBJECTIVES: To analyze the presence of chronic orofacial pain (COP) and assess facial skin microcirculation through surface temperature in women with FMS and healthy controls and to examine the relationship between peripheral facial skin temperature and oral symptomatology in FMS. DESIGN AND METHODS: An observational case-control study was conducted with 46 women with FMS and 44 healthy women. Infrared ther…

Effect of Transcutaneous Electrode Temperature on Accuracy and Precision of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen Measurements in the Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: High electrode temperature during transcutaneous monitoring is associated with skin burns in extremely premature infants. We evaluated the accuracy and precision of CO2 and O2 measurements using lower transcutaneous electrode temperatures below 42°C. METHODS: We enrolled 20 neonates. Two transcutaneous monitors were placed simultaneously on each neonate, with one electrode maintained at 42°C and the other randomized to temperatures of 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42°C. Arterial blood was collected twice at each temperature. RESULTS: At the time of arterial blood sampling, values for trans

Humans vary in their ability to elicit biting responses from Simulium venustum (Diptera:Simuliidae).

Human subjects were exposed to Simulium venustum (sensu lato) to determine whether biting rates differed among individuals. Tests with S. ve … show that biting rates are partially dependent on interindividual variation in skin secretions and skin temperature.

Revisiting a classical theory of sensory specificity: assessing consistency and stability of thermosensitive spots.

Thermal sensitivity is not uniform across the skin, and is particularly high in small (∼1 mm2) regions termed "thermosensitive spots." These spots are thought to reflect the anatomical location of specialized thermosensitive nerve endings from single primary afferents. Thermosensitive spots provide foundational support for "labeled line" or specificity theory of sensory perception, which states that different sensory qualities are transmitted by separate and specific neural pathways. This theory predicts a highly stable relation between repetitions of a thermal stimulus and the resulting senso

Differences in finger skin contact cooling response between an arterial occlusion and a vasodilated condition.

To assess the presence and magnitude of the effect of skin blood flow on finger skin cooling on contact with cold objects against the backgr … equent cold contact exposure was measured. No significant difference was found between the starting skin temperatures for the two blood flow conditions, but a distinct difference in shape of the contact cooling curve was apparent between the two blood flow conditions, with Newtonian cooling observed under the occluded condition, whereas a rewarming of the finger s …

Thermal Imaging to Predict Failed Supraclavicular Brachial Plexus Block: A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Successful brachial plexus blockade produces sympathetic blockade, resulting in increased skin temperature in the blocked segments. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of infrared thermography in predicting failed segmental supraclavicular brachial plexus block. METHODS: This prospective observational study included adult patients undergoing upper-limb surgery under supraclavicular brachial plexus block. Sensation was evaluated at the dermatomal distribution of the ulnar, median, and radial nerves. Block failure was defined as absence of complete sensory loss 30 min after bl…

[The reactions of the vascular bed of the breast in normally lactating women and in hypogalactia].

Vascular responses of the mammary gland were studied by means of rheography and measuring skin temperature in breast nursing women. Gradual rise of the mammary gland temperature occurred within the first 5 days after delivery, the increase being less obvious in deficient lactation (oligogalactia). Breast nursing within the first 3 days of lactation caused a short-term decrease of the skin temperature followed by its increase. This short-term decrease was more obvious and occurred later during lactation in women with oligogalactia. The results of rheographic studies agree with those of thermome…

Immune response of the Almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana) against the infestation with Neobenedenia sp. in three cultivated temperatures.

The Almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana) is a marine fish maintained in mariculture systems and frequently infested by monogenean parasites like Neobenedenia sp. Severe infestations can lead to high mortalities and economic losses for farmers. This study evaluated the effects of temperature on the immune response on Almaco jack infested with Neobenedenia sp. We exposed infested fishes at temperatures of 20 °C, 24 °C, and 30 °C for 20 days and took samples of different tissues at the beginning of the experiment, and after 3 and 20 days. The tissues considered were the skin, thymus, cephalic kidney,

Conductive heat loss in simulated outdoor settings: a preliminary experimental human study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the nature and magnitude of conductive heat loss in outdoor environments. Although manikin studies provide … a mean heat loss of 159 Watts. In both phases, a strong linear relationship was found between back skin temperature and heat flux. In Phase 1, the relationship was positive (β=+31 W/m² per 1 °C decrease in skin temperature; R²=0.986; p < 0.001), whereas in Phase 2, it was negative (β=-20 W/m² per 1 °C decrease; R²=0.946; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The heat flux th …

[Determinants for diagnosis of young women with and without chilliness].

Chilliness in women is a symptom of menopause, but there is increasing evidence that young women also suffer from chilliness, which can lead to mental problems such as insomnia and mood disorders. We elucidated methodological issues related to recognizing young women suffering from chilliness. Ninety-seven female university students were divided into two groups by their self-awareness of chilliness. Using a new questionnaire, we evaluated the severity of their physical, mental and chilliness-related complaints. We also measured several physical parameters (BMI, body fat ratio, basal metabolism

The influence of air humidity on human heat stress in a hot environment.

This article aims to present the physical adaptation capabilities of a human, seen as a response to extreme hot and dry or hot and humid conditions. Adaptation capabilities are expressed as safe exposure time in two variants: at rest and during physical activity. The study shows the results of calculations of the variability over time of the core temperature and skin temperature as well as heat balance. Calculations were made according to Standard No. EN ISO 7933:2005 on the basis of assumed and actual meteorological data. The results of the calculations show that in these conditions a hot but…

Conditions influencing the appearance of thermal windows and the distribution of surface temperature in hauled-out southern elephant seals.

Pinnipeds (true seals, sea lions and walruses) inhabit two thermally different environments, air and water, so need to make continuous adjustments to maintain a balanced body temperature. The thermal isolation properties of thick blubber keep warmth within the body's core, ideal for mammals while in the water; however, when on land, this thick blubber makes it difficult to lose heat. Some pinnipeds use thermal windows, discrete patches where temperature changes on their body surface, as a mechanism to dissipate excessive heat. We identify the factors that correlate with the appearance of therm

Agreement between box- and ellipse-shaped software-derived regions of interest in the assessment of exercise-related skin vasomotor adjustments using thermography.

During the measurement of skin temperature in sports by thermography, different factors could affect the values obtained, being one of them the software-derived analysis method. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the differences between box- and ellipse-shaped software-derived regions of interest in assessing exercise-related skin vasomotor adjustments using thermography. The skin temperature (Tsk) of forty-two male experienced runners was evaluated during three different conditions (rest, after cold water immersion, and after a 5-km running time trial test) in four muscles (quadriceps, ha…

Increases in core body temperature precede hot flashes in a prostate cancer patient.

OBJECTIVE: An effective and safe alternative treatment to hormone replacement therapy for hot flashes is needed for cancer patients. Interventions targeting the triggering mechanisms of hot flashes hold promise. Increases in core body temperature are a precursor of most hot flashes in women, and similar findings in prostate cancer patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy would support further research in this area. We present preliminary findings of physiological changes in a prostate cancer patient with frequent hot flashes. METHODS: Physiological changes in sternal skin conductance,
