Clinical utility and methodological implementation of smartphone-based mobility analysis: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Mobility is an informative marker of neurological function, physiological reserve, and functional independence. Laboratory gait analysis requires costly specialized equipment, while research wearables can impose sustained-use burdens. Smartphone inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a widely available platform for longitudinal assessment within a patient's natural environment. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched for peer-reviewed studies using internal smartphone sensors to map reported clinical applications, methodological implemen…

Scalable depression monitoring with smartphone speech using a multimodal benchmark and topic analysis.

Objective, scalable biomarkers are needed for continuous monitoring of major depressive disorder. Smartphone-collected speech is promising, yet clinically useful signals remain elusive. We analyzed 3151 weekly voice diaries from 284 German-speaking adults (128 MDD, 156 controls) to predict Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores. Sentence-embedding models outperformed lexical and acoustic baselines: Qwen3-8B achieved MAE 4.65 and R2 0.34, and stacked generalization of multilingual-E5 with Qwen3-8B further improved performance (MAE 4.37, R2 0.41). Audio embeddings added little incremental value.…

Smartphone-Based Multimodal Digital Biomarker Integration for Parkinson's Disease Screening and Diagnostic Support.

INTRODUCTION: Timely identification of Parkinson's disease (PD) is often delayed because of clinical heterogeneity and limited awareness of early symptoms. Digital biomarkers obtained via smartphones offer scalable screening potential. However, unimodal assessments may lack sufficient sensitivity or specificity given the multidimensional nature of PD. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a smartphone-based, multimodal digital biomarker framework for PD screening and diagnostic support. METHODS: The study progressed through two phases: an initial version [n = 368; 233 PD, 135 heal…

InclusiveHAR: A smartphone-based dataset for human activity recognition across diverse physical abilities.

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has numerous applications in healthcare, rehabilitation, athletics, and smart environments. Effective AI models rely on diverse and representative datasets to achieve robust generalization. However, the majority of existing HAR datasets are collected exclusively from non-disabled individuals, limiting their applicability in real-world healthcare scenarios involving the elderly or individuals with disabilities. To address this limitation, we introduce InclusiveHAR, a novel smartphone-based HAR dataset collected from 20 participants, including 10 non-disabled ind…

Bridge-Disease Curriculum Transfer Enables Smartphone-Based Balance Assessment in Rare Neurologic Disorders.

Video-based motor assessment could enable scalable assessment of neurological function, but rare-disease applications are constrained by extreme data scarcity and poor generalization from small cohorts. We develop and evaluate a smartphone-based balance-assessment framework in NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN), an ultra-rare disorder for which objective balance assessment is clinically valuable yet logistically challenging. At its core, a staged bridge-disease curriculum adapts a skeleton-based spatiotemporal graph model from large-scale action recognition through an intermediate Parkinson…

Smartphone-integrated colorimetric nanosensor for azodicarbonamide detection in flour using BSA/MnO₂ nanoprobes.

A smartphone-integrated colorimetric sensing platform based on bovine serum albumin (BSA)-templated manganese dioxide (BSA/MnO2) nanoprobe was successfully constructed to achieve high sensitivity and high selectivity for the detection of azodicarbonamide (ADA) in flour. The BSA/MnO2 nanoprobe was synthesized by a simple one-pot reduction method of BSA using KMnO4, without the need for complex post-processing, and had excellent water dispersibility. It undergoes redox reactions with glutathione (GSH) causing self-degradation. Since ADA can oxidize the thiol groups of GSH to disulfide bonds, the…

Predicting Post-Fracture Recovery with Smartphone Mobility Data: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

BACKGROUND: After a lower-extremity fracture, the patient's priority is to regain function. To date, our ability to measure function has been limited. However, high-fidelity sensors in smartphones continuously measure mobility, providing an expansive pre- and post-injury gait history. We assessed whether pre-injury mobility data, combined with demographic and injury data, reliably predicted post-fracture mobility. METHODS: We enrolled 107 adult patients (mean age, 45 years; 43% female, 62% White, 36% Black, 1% Asian, 1% more than one race) ≥6 months after the surgical treatment of a lower-ext…
