Tumors of the para-testicular adnexa are very rare and are typically histologically diagnosed as adenomatoid neoplasms, leiomyomata, or smooth muscle hyperplasia. Though these masses are usually benign, the potential for malignancy and mass effect causing intrascrotal discomfort necessitate proper diagnosis and excision. Herein, we describe a unique case of gradual, atraumatic testicular dislocation in a 40-year-old male caused by smooth muscle hyperplasia of the testicular adnexa affecting the epididymis and vas deferens. This case highlights the diagnostic and surgical challenges associated

Leiomyomas are benign smooth tumors that rarely affect the neck area. Complete surgical resection is the treatment of choice. Here, we describe a 13-year-old girl with a large leiomyoma of the neck, which increased in size after incomplete resection. The tumor caused progressive cervical kyphotic deformity, difficulty breathing and severe malnourishment. The tumor was resected successfully in a second surgery, and the patient is stable after 3 years of follow-up. Histopathologically, the tumor was consistent with leiomyoma and showed strong reactivity to specific smooth muscle markers, such as

Uterine leiomyomas or fibroids are benign tumors of the myometrium that affect approximately 70% of reproductive-age women. Fibroids continue to be the leading cause of hysterectomy, resulting in substantial healthcare costs. Genetic complexity and lack of cellular and molecular understanding of fibroids have posed considerable challenges to developing noninvasive treatment options. Over the years, research efforts have intensified to unravel the genetic and cellular diversities within fibroids to deepen our understanding of their origins and progression. Studies using immunostaining and flow

This report describes five cases of an unusual variant of malignant smooth-muscle neoplasm involving the skin and subcutaneous tissue characterized by a proliferation of predominantly round to oval epithelioid cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Of the five patients, four were men, one a woman; ages ranged from 69 to 85 years (mean, 76.4). The size of the lesions varied from 1.2 to 2.5 cm; two were located in the scalp, two in the face, and one in the back of the neck. Immunohistochemical evaluation of the tumor cells showed immunoreactivity for actin and vimentin in all cases and nega

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal Schwannomas are uncommonly found in the retroperitoneum and few of them show malignant transformation and invasion. Local recurrence are common in malignant Schwannomas with very few reports of tumor distinct differentiation at recurrences.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report here a rare case of retroperitoneal schwannoma with multiple origins from retroperitoneum and pelvic wall. Pathological examination confirmed the case as a schwannoma with malignant transformation. Radical dissection of the tumors along with the sacrifice of adjacent sigmoid colon and left kidney fai

Angiolipoleiomyoma (ALLM) is a solid tumor that is mostly derived from muscle tissue. It is often located in the kidneys of patients with tuberous sclerosis; ALLMs located outside the kidneys are very rare. Among the rare presentations are cutaneous ALLMs, which manifest as 1- to 4-cm asymptomatic, acquired, solitary, subcutaneous nodules that have a strong predilection for males. To the best of our knowledge, only 22 cases of ALLM of the skin have been previously reported in the literature; in 5 of these cases, the tumor was located on the ear. Histologically, tumoral proliferation is observe

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a quasi-malignant smooth muscle tumor involving lymphatic and venous spaces of the myometrium. Rare cases of IVL with admixed endometrial glands and stroma have been described, termed intravascular adenomyomatosis. We report four additional cases of intravascular adenomyomatosis and expand the clinicopathologic features of these rare tumors. Patients were 39-45 years old and presented with symptoms of dysmenorrhea, postmenopausal bleeding, or pelvic mass. All cases were associated with endometriosis. Three cases comprised intravascular bland smooth muscle tu…

The expression of myosin in normal and diseased mammary glands of 199 Japanese women was evaluated immunohistochemically by the avidin-biotin peroxidase complex method using antibodies to three human smooth muscle myosin heavy chain isoforms derived from the vascular smooth muscle: myosin SM1 is expressed consistently from fetal stage to adulthood, myosin SM2 appears only in well-differentiated smooth muscle after birth, and myosin SMemb is more abundant in embryonic aortas. SM1 was expressed in myoepithelial cells of normal mammary glands and fibrocystic diseases and in myoepithelial-like tum

Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a rare type of tumor that is histologically benign but biologically invasive. It originates from the smooth muscle of the uterine or the uterine vein. It can grow through the uterus and extend into the pelvic cavity, or grow along the veins without invading the wall of the venous vessel itself. The tumors are estrogen-dependent and can metastasize through the bloodstream. Thus, in addition to continuous growth, some tumors exhibit isolated growths in the venous system and heart chambers or show disseminated growth in the lungs, although distant metastasis to other

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor that rarely affects children and occurs most frequently in the uterine myometrium and gastrointestinal tract. Its occurrence in the oral cavity is considered rare probably because of the scarcity of smooth muscle tissue in the oral cavity. The most common intraoral sites for leiomyoma are lips, palate and tongue. The purpose of this case report is to present the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of a rare case of oral leiomyoma in a 13-year-old girl with a 4-month history of a swelling in her left mandibular area extending from first molar to …

BACKGROUND: Primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare malignant smooth-muscle neoplasm with fewer than 30 documented cases worldwide. Immunohistochemically, ovarian leiomyosarcomas are characterized by the expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA). Until recently, no report investigated the role of bcl-2 expression in primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma. We report the management and an immunohistochemical analysis of bcl-2 in a patient with primary leiomyosarcoma of the ovary.
CASE REPORT: The patient, a 71-year-old woman, presented with a history of lower abdominal pain and a

Oral leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor with a low incidence. Oral leiomyomas present as slow growing, asymptomatic sub mucosal masses, usually in the tongue, hard palate or buccal mucosa. They may be seen at any age and are usually discovered when they are 1 to 2 cm in diameter. The diagnosis is mainly determined by histological studies and special stains that confirm the smooth muscle origin. Surgical excision appears to be the best line of treatment and recurrence is unexpected. The purpose of this article is to present a case of a 32-year old male with a 1 month history of a leiomyo…

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle neoplasm. They can occur in any organ, but the most common forms occur in the uterus, small bowel and the esophagus. Leiomyoma of breast is a rare benign non epithelial tumor. Most leiomyomas in the breast are found in the subareolar region. There are few cases being reported in the literature. Here we report a case of 52 years old lady who presented to us with a painless right sided breast lump. There was no history of nipple discharge, trauma or use of oral contraceptive pills. Excisional biopsy revealed a growth pattern of interlacing fascicles of smooth-

Fifty canine gastrointestinal (GI) mesenchymal tumors were examined to determine the occurrence of leiomyomas (LM) and GI stromal tumors and to compare their clinicopathologic features. Twenty-one tumors (42%) were histologically reclassified as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and 29 tumors (58%) as LMs on the basis of their histologic similarity with homologous human tumors. The GISTs occurred equally in males and females, with a mean age of 11 years (range 5-14 years). Five GISTs (24%) were associated with clinical signs and six (29%) had metastasis in liver or abdominal cavity. The

Ovarian leiomyomas (OLMs) are rare benign ovarian tumors, representing only 0.5%-1% of all benign ovarian neoplasms and exceptionally uncommon in children. Fewer than 100 cases are reported worldwide, with < 10 in the pediatric and adolescent age group. We report a 2-year-old girl presenting with incidental abdominal fullness. Imaging revealed a right adnexal mass, and intraoperatively, the tumor was found to completely replace the right ovary. Right oophorectomy with omentectomy and peritoneal washings was performed. Histopathology showed spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells with minimal atypia

Hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms. PEComas concurrent with other hepatic lesions is a very rare occurrence, with only two previously reported cases. We report a primary hepatic PEComa associated with focal nodular hyperplasia in a patient with a previous history of cutaneous melanoma. Diagnostic imaging studies suggested a hepatic adenoma and the patient underwent a segmentectomy. The tumor was mainly composed of epithelioid cells, adipose tissue and smooth muscle fibers intermixed with blood vessels. The neoplastic cells were diffusely i

The morphologic assessment of uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) may be challenging, and diagnostic immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis is currently lacking. We evaluated the genomic landscape of 167 uterine LMS by targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) to identify common genomic alterations. IHC analyses corresponding to these genomic landmarks were applied to a test cohort of 16 uterine LMS, 6 smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP), and 6 leiomyomas with NGS data and a validation cohort of 8 uterine LMS, 12 STUMP, 21 leiomyomas and leiomyoma variants, 7 low-grade endometri…

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare tumor, characterized by two different cell populations and both demonstrate a malignant nature microscopically. It constitutes less than 2% of all salivary gland malignancies. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified this disease as a separate pathological category. The diagnosis of this tumor is arrived by biopsy. It shows slow growth and is small in size; it appears in ulcerative form of mucosa in some cases. Gland cells consist of two layers of outer myoepithelium cells and inner epithelial cells. Vimentin staining is positive. It
