The objective of the present study is to investigate the impact of Sex Chromosome Trisomy (SCT; XXX, XXY, XYY) on the early appearance of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) symptoms, and the predictive value of Joint Attention for symptoms of ASD. SCTs are specific genetic conditions that may serve as naturalistic 'at risk' models of neurodevelopment, as they are associated with increased risk for neurobehavioral vulnerabilities. A group of 82 children with SCT (aged 1-8 years) was included at baseline of this longitudinal study. Joint Attention was measured at baseline with structured behavior ob

Impairments in social interaction and verbal and non verbal communication are among the main features of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The causes of ASD are still unknown but the research efforts of the last decade have identified a number of factors (rare gene mutations, gene variations and adverse environmental events) that, interacting in complex ways, affect early brain development. The clinical evidence that prenatal exposure to the antiepileptic drug valproate (VPA) is associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental delay, cognitive deficits and autism in children, has drawn the a

CONTEXT: Young children have increasing access to interactive applications (apps) at home and at school. Existing research is clear on the potential dangers of overuse of screens, but there is less clarity around the extent to which interactive apps may be helpful in supporting early learning.
OBJECTIVE: In this systematic review, we present a narrative synthesis of studies examining whether children <6 years can learn from interactive apps.
DATA SOURCES: The PsycInfo, PubMed, ACM Digital Library, and ERIC databases were searched.
STUDY SELECTION: Studies were included if the study design w

INTRODUCTION: The Neurodevelopmental Parent Report for Outcome Monitoring (ND-PROM), initially developed to monitor developmental and behavioral functions in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), assesses symptoms across a wide range of domains relevant in Down syndrome (DS).
METHODS: Psychometric properties of ND-PROM were assessed in 385 individuals with DS and 52 with a combined diagnosis of DS and ASD (DS+ASD), whose caregivers completed the ND-PROM questionnaire for a clinical visit in a specialized Down syndrome program at a tertiary pediatric hospital. Confirmatory factor analy

It is estimated that social anxiety disorder affects approximately 13.3% individuals within the community at some point in their lifetime and is associated with significant functional impairment. A variety of drug groups have demonstrated efficacy in treating social anxiety disorder, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paroxetine is an SSRI approved by the FDA and Health Canada for the treatment of a variety of psychiatric conditions. Paroxetine has been the most studied agent in social anxiety disorder and has been shown to be effective in short-term, fixed- and flexibl

This study sought to understand how young adults (age 18-25) with histories of mental health disorders are coping with disrupted transitions to adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional web survey was conducted in March-June 2021 of 967 US young adults with pre-pandemic psychiatric disability to assess their current psychiatric status, interrupted transitions, and associations with social determinants including income, community participation, and social context. Mental health was assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7)

PURPOSE: DSM 5 indicates social communication deficit as one of the necessary criteria for the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. However, the pragmatic assessment of language is not as commonly considered as the formal aspects of language. The presented guide aims to consider communicative elements that include nonverbal aspects of language and the intentionality of communicative acts to identify the first signs of pragmatic alteration.
METHODS: The ROLPP (Observation Script of Language from a Pragmatic Perspective) is an observation script for socio-cognitive and pre-verbal language ski

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the etiology of autistic-like traits in the general population and the etiological overlap between the three aspects of the triad of impairments (social impairments, communication impairments, restricted repetitive behaviors and interests) that together define autism spectrum disorders.
METHOD: Parents of 3,400 8-year-old twin pairs from the Twins Early Development Study completed the Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test, a screening instrument for autism spectrum symptoms in mainstream samples. Genetic model-fitting of categorical and continuous data is reporte

INTRODUCTION: The disorders of the autistic spectrum form a collection of symptoms due to dysfunction of the central nervous system with great variations in the degree of severity. Autism is considered to be a generalized disorder of development (DSM-IV). Autism is not defined as a specific disease, since it does not have a specific aetiology.
DEVELOPMENT: There are many syndromes related to autism, but most of these disorders are not selective and show a combination of autistic symptoms together with symptoms of neurological dysfunction. There is no specific aetiology, although in recent yea

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, featuring social communication deficit and repetitive/restricted behaviors as common symptoms. Its prevalence has continuously increased, but, till now, there are no therapeutic approaches to relieve the core symptoms, particularly social deficit. In previous studies, abnormal function of the glutamatergic neural system has been proposed as a critical mediator and therapeutic target of ASD-associated symptoms. Here, we investigated the possible roles of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptors (AMPARs) in au

BACKGROUND: People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly experience symptoms related to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. One-third of ASD cases may be complicated by the presence of ADHD. Individuals with dual diagnoses face greater barriers to accessing treatment for ADHD and respond less positively to primary pharmacologic interventions. Nonpharmacologic technology-aided tools for hyperactivity and inattention in people with ASD are being developed, although research into their efficacy and safety remains limited.

Autistic disorders are summarized in DSM‑5 under the term autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and are severe, lifelong, pervasive neurodevelopmental disorders. Core features manifested even in childhood are impairments in social interaction and communication as well as restricted and repetitive behavior. The intensity of symptoms, language and cognitive impairments vary but the majority of affected individuals have below average intelligence and 80% have at least one comorbid disorder. The diverse pathology and heterogeneity in phenotypes are caused by a complex genetic etiology, which is associate

Approximately 50% of patients with the genetic disease tuberous sclerosis complex present with autism spectrum disorder. Although a number of studies have investigated the link between autism and tuberous sclerosis complex, the etiology of autism spectrum disorder in these patients remains unclear. Abnormal cerebellar function during critical phases of development could disrupt functional processes in the brain, leading to development of autistic features. Accordingly, the authors review the potential role of cerebellar dysfunction in the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder in tuberous sc

The authors of "Impact of Electronic Health Records on Information Practices in Mental Health Contexts: Scoping Review" have effectively brought to our attention the failure of the electronic health record (EHR) to represent the human context. Because mental health or behavioral disorders (and functional status in general) emerge from an interaction between the individual's characteristics and the social context, it is essentially a failure to represent the human context. The assessment and treatment of these disorders must reflect how the person lives, their degree of social connectedness, th

Social phobia is the most common anxiety disorder in the community with a prevalence rate in the range of 5-8%. The problem most often emerges in childhood or adolescence. Individuals with generalized social phobia are at risk of developing other psychiatric disorders such as major depression, alcohol abuse and other anxiety disorders. Sufferers of social phobia often do not seek treatment until they encounter difficulty with comorbid disorders. Recent research indicates that social anxiety disorder is associated with higher levels of disability and greater reductions in quality of life than p

OBJECTIVE: Subjective social status (SSS) may be a stronger determinant of health than objective measures of socioeconomic status. We sought to examine the effect of community and national SSS on symptoms of depression in a racially/ethnically diverse sample of adult women with noncancerous uterine conditions.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data obtained from 634 women who enrolled in the Study of Pelvic Problems, Hysterectomy, and Intervention Alternatives (SOPHIA) in 2003 and 2004. SOPHIA was a longitudinal study of women aged 31 to 54 who were experiencing abnormal uterine b

I present a case study of a latency-age boy referred for assessment of a nonverbal learning disability/disorder (NLD) who also had features of Asperger's syndrome (AS). I review NLD terminology, presumed brain-behavior relationship, neuropsychological profile, and diagnosis/classification issues. I discuss the challenge of differentiating NLD from AS in relation to the client's pattern of visual-spatial, communication, social-emotional, and behavioral NLD correlates. I integrate neuropsychological and personality assessment data with interviews, observations, prior testing, and input from teac

Clinical significance of a broad autism phenotype (BAP) seems to be increasingly supported by growing reports of high prevalence of subthreshold autism spectrum disorder (sASD) or autistic traits (AT) in various demographic samples, particularly in individuals with psychiatric conditions. We question this increasing extension of the autism spectrum and its potential negative consequences for clinical services, research, cultural attitudes, and resource allocation, as well as alternative explanations of what is currently attributed to sASD and AT. In modern psychiatry the diagnostic threshold i

Asperger's syndrome symptoms in children, adolescents and young adults. Asperger syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopemental disorder which is classified into autism- spectrums disorders (ASDs). AS is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, stereotyped and restricted patterns of behaviour, activities and interests. There is no clinically significant delay in cognitive development nor general delay in language. However, there are specific abnormalities such as literal interpretations, miscomprehension of nuance, unusually pedantic and formal speec
