Fetal feminization and female gender identity in the testicular feminizing syndrome of androgen insensitivity.

Interview data on aspects of sex and eroticism from a sample of 10 chromosomally male (XY) patients with the complete testicular feminization (androgen insensitivity) syndrome and from a sample of 23 patients with the late-treated adrenogenital syndrome showed marked differences. Homosexual experiences and/or dreams were lacking in the androgen-insensitive group as compared with the adrenogenital group (p[Symbol: see text]0.01).The androgen-insensitive group reported lower frequency of sexual arousal from visual stimuli than did the adrenogenital group (p[Symbol: see text]0.05).Findings on dif

Condom use among high-risk adolescents: anticipation of partner disapproval and less pleasure associated with not using condoms.

OBJECTIVE: We determined the association of demographic, psychosocial, and contextual factors with condom use among a large community sample of at-risk adolescents recruited from four locations in the U.S. METHODS: We enrolled 1,410 adolescents/young adults between the ages of 15 and 21 with a history of unprotected sex in the past 90 days at four study sites. Subjects completed an audio-assisted, computerized assessment that gathered information about sexual behavior and its contexts, substance use, and relevant risk and protective attitudes. RESULTS: Nearly two-thirds of adolescents did no

Belief in demons and exorcism in psychiatric patients in Switzerland.

Belief in demons as the cause of mental health problems is a well-known phenomenon in many cultures of the world. However, there is little literature on this phenomenon in Protestant subcultures of the West. The author conducted a systematic investigation of the prevalence of this attribution in 343 mainly Protestant out-patients of a psychiatric clinic in Switzerland, who described themselves as religious. Of these, 129 (37.6 per cent) believed in the possible causation of their problems through the influence of evil spirits, labelling this as 'occult bondage' or 'possession'. One hundred and

Lifestyle and risk of premature sexual activity in a high school population of Seventh-Day Adventists: Valuegenesis 1989.

In the past 20 years, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including AIDS, and the physical, psychological, and economic difficulties associated with unwanted pregnancy have increased steadily among American adolescents. The objective of this study was to evaluate Adventist lifestyle as a modification of popular American culture which reduces the risk of early sexual activity in adolescents and thus also reduces the risk for both STDs and teen pregnancy. The study was based on 8,321 respondents to a questionnaire concerning specific behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes among Seventh-Day Adventis

College Campus Community Readiness to Address Intimate Partner Violence Among LGBTQ+ Young Adults: A Conceptual and Empirical Examination.

This paper provides an overview of a conceptual model that integrates theories of social ecology, minority stress, and community readiness to better understand risk for and outcomes of intimate partner violence (IPV) among LGBTQ+ college students. Additionally, online survey data was collected from a sample of 202 LGBTQ+ students enrolled in 119 colleges across the United States to provide preliminary data on some aspects of the proposed model. Results suggested that students generally thought their campuses were low in readiness to address IPV; that is, students felt that their campuses could

Patient assessed symptoms are poor predictors of objective findings. Results from a cross sectional study in patients treated with radiotherapy for pharyngeal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to assess the value of the EORTC questionnaires C30 and H&N35, as an instrument for the study of side effects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We invited all recurrence free patients, treated with radical radiotherapy for pharyngeal cancer between 1998 and 2002 at our institution, to participate in the study. Data was retrieved using questionnaires, functional endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, dental examination with orthopantomography and saliva flow measurements. Thirty-five (55% of invited) participated. RESULTS: Side effects were omnipresent and often seve

[Are children properly classified within the scope of expert assessment to determine need for services?].

This project deals with assessment directives issued by the leading statutory care insurance companies to define the need for care of children at certain ages in coping with the activities of daily life specified by the German Social Legislation. The ages in question relate to healthy, normally developed children. They are used as a measure of comparison for the assessment of diseased children. Besides, they have a decisive significance in defining the need for care. Only if a child is not able to perform a certain activity, although it is meant to be able to do so at that age, can we define t

Antigen unmasking enhances visualization efficacy of the oocyte activation factor, phospholipase C zeta, in mammalian sperm.

STUDY QUESTION: Is it possible to improve clinical visualization of phospholipase C zeta (PLCζ) as a diagnostic marker of sperm oocyte activation capacity and male fertility? SUMMARY ANSWER: Poor PLCζ visualization efficacy using current protocols may be due to steric or conformational occlusion of native PLCζ, hindering antibody access, and is significantly enhanced using antigen unmasking/retrieval (AUM) protocols. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Mammalian oocyte activation is mediated via a series of intracellular calcium (Ca2+) oscillations induced by sperm-specific PLCζ. PLCζ represents not only

Behaviour therapy for obesity treatment considering approved drug therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a worldwide health problem whose prevalence is on the increase. Many obesity-associated diseases require intensive medical treatment and are the cause of a large proportion of health-related expenditures in Germany. Treatment of obesity includes nutritional, exercise and behaviour therapy, usually in combination. The goal of behaviour therapy for obesity is to bring about a long-term alteration in the eating and exercise habits of overweight and obese individuals. Under certain circumstances, drug treatment may be indicated. OBJECTIVES: What is the effectiveness of be

The Management of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Adolescents with Obesity.

Adolescence marks a transition between childhood and adulthood, a time of change and turbulence in which the hypothalamo-pituitary gonadal (HPG) axis activates, acting as a harbinger for the development of secondary sexual characteristics, thelarche and menarche in girls, growth and development of bone and skeletal muscle, psychosocial and identity development. Contemporaneous with these changes, adolescence coincides with heightened peer pressure to conform to social norms, academic pressure, and impending exams. This rite of passage into adulthood is like a white-water ride, at a time when t

Predictors, patterns, and correlates of moderate-severe psychological distress among New York City College Students during Waves 2-4 of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have exacerbated mental health conditions by introducing and/or modifying stressors, particularly in university populations. We examined longitudinal patterns, time-varying predictors, and contemporaneous correlates of moderate-severe psychological distress (MS-PD) among college students. During 2020-2021, participants completed self-administered questionnaires quarterly (T1 = 562, T2 = 334, T3 = 221, and T4 = 169). MS-PD reflected Kessler-6 scores ≥ 8. At T1 (baseline), most participants were cisgender women [96% vs. 4% transgender/gender non-conforming (TGNC)]. MS-P

Facility characteristics preferred by older men seeking medical male circumcision services in Kenya: qualitative findings from the 'Tasco' study (May 2014-June 2016).

Primary healthcare facilities are central to the implementation of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) as points of access to integrated health services in line with the Kenya AIDS Strategic Framework II (2020/21-2024/25). Knowledge of factors that explain men's uptake of VMMC and sexual health services at these facilities and preferences of where to get the services remain poorly understood. Using qualitative methodologies, we examined factors that determined facility choice for VMMC services and reasons for preferring the facility among men aged 25-39 years who previously underwent VM

Drivers: A Biologically Contextualized, Cross-Inferential View of the Epidemiology of Neurodegenerative Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Sutherland et al. (2011) suggested that, instead of risk factors for single neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs), there was a need to identify specific "drivers", i.e., risk factors with impact on specific deposits, such as amyloid-β, tau, or α-synuclein, acting across entities. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Redefining drivers as "neither protein/gene- nor entity-specific features identifiable in the clinical and general epidemiology of conformational NDDs (CNDDs) as potential footprints of templating/spread/transfer mechanisms", we conducted an analysis of the epidemiology of ten CNDDs,

A prevalence-based approach to societal costs occurring in consequence of child abuse and neglect.

BACKGROUND: Traumatization in childhood can result in lifelong health impairment and may have a negative impact on other areas of life such as education, social contacts and employment as well. Despite the frequent occurrence of traumatization, which is reflected in a 14.5 percent prevalence rate of severe child abuse and neglect, the economic burden of the consequences is hardly known. The objective of this prevalence-based cost-of-illness study is to show how impairment of the individual is reflected in economic trauma follow-up costs borne by society as a whole in Germany and to compare the

Quality of life after combined adenoidectomy and laser tonsillotomy for pediatric sleep-disordered breathing: A prospective observational cohort trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tonsillotomy is an alternative to tonsillectomy with much less morbidity in case of tonsil surgery for pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (PSDB), but tonsillar disease-specific quality of life data conforming the effectiveness are sparse. METHODS: A prospective observation study was conducted in children with PSDB undergoing laser (adeno)tonsillotomy. A German version Tonsil and Adenoid Health Status Instrument (TAHSI) for the children (G-TAHSI-c), for the parents (G-TAHSI-p), and the Tonsillectomy Outcome Inventory 14 (TOI-14) were measured before surgery (T0), 3 months (T3),

The mental health of university students in South Africa: Results of the national student survey.

BACKGROUND: We estimate 30-day prevalence of 11 common mental disorders among a representative sample of university students in South Africa and explore disparities in student mental health across historically segregated institutions and marginalised groups. METHODS: Cross-sectional data collected in self-report surveys of students (n = 28,268) from 17 universities were weighted to adjust for differences in survey responses. Poisson regression was used to estimate risk ratios (RRs). RESULTS: Prevalence estimates were highest (21.0-24.5 %) for two anxiety disorders (social anxiety disorder, P

Women and barriers to harm reduction services: a literature review and initial findings from a qualitative study in Barcelona, Spain.

BACKGROUND: There are an estimated 3.2 million women who inject drugs worldwide, constituting 20% of all people who inject drugs. The limited data that are available suggest that women who inject drugs are at greater risk of HIV and viral hepatitis acquisition than men who inject drugs. This increased vulnerability is a product of a range of environmental, social and individual factors affecting women, which also affect their ability to engage in health promoting services such as harm reduction. METHODS: The researchers undertook a narrative literature review examining access to harm reductio
