Association among oral health, social participation, and higher-level functional capacity in Japanese older people.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining a high level of functional ability, which is essential for independent living in older adults, is influenced by social participation. Oral health has been associated with higher-level functional ability; however, whether social participation is related to this association remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association among oral health, higher-level functional ability, and social participation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 154 participants aged ≥65 years (mean age: 82.6 ± 5.5 years) in an underpopulated area. Higher-level functional ab

Adaptation to social-evaluative threat: Effects of repeated acceptance and status stressors on cardiovascular reactivity.

Social-evaluative threat plays a key role in research on stress, health and related psychophysiological mechanisms such as cardiovascular reactivity (CVR). Social-evaluative threats can activate two broad social motives: striving for status, achievement and influence, and/or striving for acceptance, inclusion, and connection. Prior research emphasizes threats related to status (e.g., task performance) or combined threats to status and acceptance, obscuring their independent effects. Further, because prior research has mostly utilized single stressors, it is not clear if effects of social-evalu

Mental health as a non-communicable disease among refugees, asylum seekers, and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The number of forcibly displaced people has reached unprecedented levels, exposing refugees, asylum seekers, and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection to cumulative adversities that severely affect health. Non-communicable diseases - particularly mental health conditions - represent a growing yet inadequately addressed component of this burden, with mental health remaining poorly integrated into non-communicable disease care frameworks. Within the NCD framework, mental disorders are increasingly recognized as chronic, disabling conditions with profound social and economic conseque

Self-other discrimination in face recognition depending on personal familiarity: investigating a sample consisting of Japanese and Han Chinese women.

This study explored how the inclusion of others in the self during face recognition is modulated by personal familiarity, cultural background within East Asia, and autistic traits. Female Japanese and Han Chinese university students completed the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ) questionnaire and performed a self-other discrimination task using images of their own face morphed with that of a friend or stranger of the same sex. Thresholds and widths were calculated by fitting a psychometric function to each participant's responses. In both groups, the threshold in the self-friend morphing conditio

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for optical characterizations of orthotopic head and neck cancer models in vivo.

PURPOSE: Inclusion in sports fosters social integration and well-being for individuals with disabilities. However, sports environments also present risks related to alcohol consumption, particularly through social interactions and established drinking norms. While general prevention programs exist in Swiss sports, limited research exists and no specific strategies are tailored to the needs of disability sports settings. This study explores alcohol consumption and prevention measures in Swiss disability sports, focusing on the perspectives of sports coaches. METHODS: A qualitative research des

Cultural Dynamics in Disaster Management: Exploring Sociocultural Influences on Disaster Response in Malaysia.

OBJECTIVE: Disaster management strategies often emphasize technical and structural solutions, overlooking the sociocultural factors that shape community resilience and disaster response. In Malaysia, a multiethnic and multireligious country frequently affected by floods and monsoon storms, cultural beliefs, social networks, and traditional practices play a pivotal role in shaping disaster preparedness and recovery. This study examines how religious beliefs, community cohesion, gender roles, and traditional knowledge influence disaster management in Malaysia. METHODS: A qualitative research ap

Loneliness and socio-occupational functioning in psychosis: A systematic review.

Loneliness is highly prevalent in psychosis and is associated with poorer clinical and quality-of-life outcomes. In nonclinical populations, loneliness is linked to a range of social and occupational difficulties. Difficulties with socio-occupational functioning (SOF) are common in psychosis and are consistently identified as a key recovery priority. However, the relationship between loneliness and SOF in psychosis remains unclear. A PROSPERO-registered systematic review was conducted. Database searches (PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO and CINAHL) identified 1118 records, of which 15 met inclusion cr

An examination of the relationship between hoarding symptoms and hostility.

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a persistent and severe psychiatric condition in which individuals are unable to discard possessions, which results in considerable clutter. Individuals who hoard often endorse interpersonal difficulties and social isolation. However, little research has examined mechanisms that may help to explain this relationship. One possible mechanism is hostility, which is characterized by increased sensitivity to real or perceived social threats. The current study examined the relationship between hoarding symptoms and hostility across two undergraduate samples. In study 1, uns

The effect of social anxiety on threat acquisition and extinction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Although exposure-based therapy has been found to be effective at alleviating symptoms of social anxiety disorder, it often does not lead to full remission, and relapse after treatment is common. Exposure therapy is based on theoretical principles of extinction of conditioned fear responses. However, there are inconsistencies in findings across experiments that have investigated the effect of social anxiety on threat conditioning and extinction processes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine whether elevated levels of social anxiety are associated with abnormalities in thr

Rethinking Weight-Centric Models: Advancing Weight-Inclusive Care for Black Women.

Weight-inclusive interventions offer a promising alternative to traditional weight-centric approaches that focus primarily on weight loss. Black women, who are disproportionately classified as having obesity based on body mass index (BMI) criteria, often face limited success and added stigma from weight-focused models, which overlook the complex biological, social, and structural factors affecting health, as well as intersecting oppressions like racism, sexism, and weight bias. This article examines how cultural norms, body image, and systemic barriers shape health behaviors among Black women

The impact of dance/movement psychotherapy on social skills in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: This study conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of Dance/Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) on social skills in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although DMP has been widely applied as an embodied and relational intervention, quantitative evidence regarding its impact on social functioning remains limited. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed across major databases (PubMed and PsycNet) to identify studies published between 2000 and 2025. Eligible studies examined DMP-based interventions targeting social skills in individuals with ASD and

Ostracism, cortisol reactivity, and motivation for high-calorie food in children and adolescents with obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Experiencing ostracism (i.e., social exclusion) may impact self-regulatory eating behaviors, particularly in youths with excess weight. Yet, research in pediatric patients with obesity is lacking. Hence, we examined the effect of Virtual Reality(VR)-based ostracism on motivation for food in children and adolescents with BMI ≥97th percentile. METHODS: In a randomized experimental between-subject design, forty-one patients (Mage = 13.37 years, 46% female) with a diagnosis of obesity (ICD-10: E66) were randomized to a social exclusion or inclusion condition in a VR-Cyberball-paradigm.
