The Harris Center: Expanding Integrated Care with Partnerships Beyond Traditional Clinic Walls.

Integrated behavioral health care has advanced from simple service colocation to a coordinated, system-wide approach that connects behavioral health, primary care, emergency medicine, social services, and community support. Health systems increasingly rely on partnerships to address the complex medical and social needs driving population health outcomes. The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD (The Harris Center) illustrates this evolution, operating as a comprehensive population health partner that serves nearly 90,000 individuals annually across Harris County. Through deep integration wi

Social media use and depression among middle-aged and older Chinese adults: mediating roles of health literacy and perceived social support.

BACKGROUND: Most research on social media use and depression has focused on young adults. A few studies in middle-aged and older Chinese adults have reported a negative association, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among middle-aged and older adults (n = 2,743) in five cities of Hainan Province, China. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Social Media Use Integration Scale, the Short-Form Health Literacy Questionnaire, and the Perceived Social Support Scale. Mediation and moderation models were tested using

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy for Treating Social Anxiety: A Scoping Review of Treatment Designs and Adaptation to Stuttering.

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) has been shown to be an effective technique for reducing social anxiety. People who stutter are at greater risk of developing heightened social anxiety. Cognitive behavior therapy protocols have shown promise in reducing social anxiety in people who stutter, but no studies have investigated VRET targeting social anxiety associated with stuttering. The aim of the current review is to provide an overview of VRET techniques used to treat social anxiety and insights into how these techniques might be adopted in the case of comorbid stuttering and social anxi

Paving the Way for an Integrated Care Model: Experiences of Women Living With HIV and Breast Cancer in Tanzania.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women globally. In sub-Saharan Africa, its impact is compounded by high HIV prevalence. Studies show that women living with HIV and BC (WLHIVBC) often present at advanced stages despite contact with HIV Care and Treatment Clinics. Little is known about their experiences in navigating both conditions. This study explored barriers and facilitators to integrated care for WLHIVBC in Tanzania to inform development of a patient-centered care model. METHODS: This qualitative study used a grounded theory approach, conducting 21

Perceived barriers and opportunities for implementing an integrated psychological intervention for depression in adolescents living with HIV in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) have an increased risk of depression, negatively affecting their adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and treatment outcomes. Integrating mental health care in HIV care and treatment settings improves comprehensive care. However, integration remains challenging in Tanzania, like in other high-burden and low-resource settings. The overall objective of this work is to inform the development of a psychological intervention for depression in adolescents living with HIV (ALWHIV). We describe perceived barriers and opportuni

Heterogeneity and Its Impact on Rehabilitation Outcomes and Interventions for Community Reintegration in People With Spinal Cord Injuries: An Integrative Review.

Background: Various injury characteristics such as cause, level, severity, and time since injury divide individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) into many subgroups. The heterogeneity among individuals' injuries and personal characteristics has significant implications for SCI rehabilitation practice, specifically directed toward community reintegration, which is a key goal of rehabilitation interventions for people with disabilities. Purpose: This study aims to summarize the evidence on attributes that make the SCI population heterogeneous, the impact of these attributes on community reinteg

Maintaining community living with post brain injury agitation: a role for sodium valproate.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence to support pharmacological interventions for post-brain injury agitation and aggression. CASE REPORT: The case of Patient A, a man with severe agitation and aggression post-brain injury, highlights the successful use of sodium valproate, in the maintenance of community living, which had been threatened by the breakdown of the care package for this lone-dwelling individual. CONCLUSIONS: The case uniquely illustrates the effect of the drug due to a washout period, albeit due to patient non-compliance, allowing comparative observations both on and off and a

Asperger syndrome revisited.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a disorder on the continuum of autistic spectrum disorders characterized by a lack of social reciprocity and empathy, and severe difficulties in social integration. Controversy remains as to what constitutes AS and whether it should be declared a separate disease or higher-functioning autism. This review discusses the contributions made by Hans Asperger and Leo Kanner in first delineating the condition, and examines the syndrome's incidence, prevalence, and etiologies. Recent studies using neuroimaging are described, along with current diagnostic and treatment options…

The protocol for the Families First Edmonton trial (FFE): a randomized community-based trial to compare four service integration approaches for families with low-income.

BACKGROUND: Families with low incomes experience an array of health and social challenges that compromise their resilience and lead to negative family outcomes. Along with financial constraints, there are barriers associated with mental and physical health, poorer education and language. In addition, vulnerable populations experience many services as markedly unhelpful. This combination of family and service barriers results in reduced opportunities for effective, primary-level services and an increased use of more expensive secondary-level services (e.g., emergency room visits, child apprehen

Exploring the Association of Community Integration in Mental Health among Formerly Homeless Individuals Living in Permanent Supportive Housing.

Supportive housing has been widely used among persons experiencing chronic homelessness and/or mental health conditions. While it has been demonstrated to be effective in addressing homelessness among populations with complex needs, community integration remains a challenge. Community integration is the extent to which individuals live, participate, and socialize in their community and consists of three aspects: physical, social, and psychological. The study utilized data from the Transitions to Housing project that followed formerly homeless individuals (N = 383) throughout their first year o

Multidimensional social support and the health of homeless individuals.

Homeless individuals often suffer from serious health problems. It has been argued that the homeless are socially isolated, with low levels of social support and social functioning, and that this lack of social resources contributes to their ill health. These observations suggest the need to further explore the relationship between social networks, social support, and health among persons who are homeless. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between multidimensional (cognitive/perceived and behavioral/received) social support and health outcomes, including physical health
