Unmet psychological needs underlying mobile phone dependence among medical undergraduates: a qualitative study based on the basic psychological needs theory.

BACKGROUND: Mobile phone dependence is recognized as a global public health concern, particularly among medical students. The unmet psychological needs reflected in mobile phone dependence among undergraduate medical students remain unclear. Our study aimed to explore the unmet psychological needs underlying mobile phone dependence among medical undergraduates from the Basic Psychological Needs Theory (BPNT) perspective through interviews. METHODS: Fifteen undergraduate medical students exhibiting mobile phone dependence were recruited through purposive sampling for in-depth, semi-structured

Trajectories of mobility difficulty and falls in community-dwelling adults aged 50 + in Taiwan from 2003 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: A decline in mobility leads to fall occurrence and poorer performance in instrumental activities of daily living, which are widely proved to be associated with older adults' health-related quality of life. To inform potential predicaments faced by older adults at different age levels, predictors of this mobility change and falls along with the ageing process need to be further evaluated. Therefore, this study examined the risk factors associated with the longitudinal course of mobility difficulty and falls among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults in the Taiwanese commu

Multidomain Vulnerability and Fear of Falling in Mexican American Older Adults: A Repeated Measures Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To examine how multidomain vulnerability relates to fear of falling among Mexican American older adults across repeated survey waves. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of three waves (2012-2021) of the H-EPESE study with 893 person-wave observations. Fear of falling was the ordinal outcome. A vulnerability index combined four indicators: mobility impairment, depressive symptoms, loneliness, and urinary incontinence. Ordinal GEE models adjusted for age, sex, cognitive status, and survey wave. RESULTS: Multidomain vulnerability was strongly associated with fear of falling. Com

Laser: The torch of freedom for ankyloglossia.

The tongue is an important oral structure that affects speech, position of teeth, periodontal tissues, nutrition, swallowing, nursing, and certain social activities. Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie, is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenulum, which restricts mobility of the tongue. Though the ankyloglossia is not a serious condition, it may lead to a host of problems including infant feeding difficulties, speech disorders, and various mechanical and social issues related to the inability of the tongue to protrude. Hence, management of ankyloglossia should be cons

Reemergence of Scabies Driven by Adolescents and Young Adults, Germany, 2009-2018.

To validate anecdotal evidence on scabies infestations, we analyzed inpatient and outpatient claims data in Germany. Scabies diagnoses increased 9-fold and treatment failure 4-fold during 2009-2018, driven mainly by persons 15-24 years of age. Prevention and control in young adults appear key because of these persons' high mobility and social connectivity.

Deaf older adults' experiences of receiving old age care support.

Research examining Deaf older adults' needs or experiences of old age care is scarce. This study aims to describe how Deaf older adults, supported by Swedish old age care, experience interactions and participation in everyday life and in social care situations. This study gives voice to Deaf older adults whose perspectives are rarely represented in research. To minimize misunderstandings, the qualitative individual interviews with Deaf older adults were conducted by Deaf signing research assistants. The results show that Deaf older adults face communication barriers due to a lack of shared lan

"When I Need to Travel, I Feel Feverish": Everyday Experiences of Transport Inequalities Among Older Adults in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Buses are the most common form of public transport for older adults in developing countries. With over 37% of total trips, buses are the principal mode of transport in Dhaka. The majority of older adults are dependent on buses because of their affordability relative to other modes such as auto-rickshaws, rideshares, and taxis. This study aims to investigate key barriers in accessing buses in Dhaka and the consequences of these barriers to the everyday mobility of older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Thirty participants aged 60 and older were recruited from 2 s

Rehabilitation aimed at improving outdoor mobility for people after stroke: a multicentre randomised controlled study (the Getting out of the House Study).

BACKGROUND: One-third of stroke patients are dependent on others to get outside their homes. This can cause people to become housebound, leading to increased immobility, poor health, isolation and misery. There is some evidence that outdoor mobility rehabilitation can reduce these limitations. OBJECTIVE: To test the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an outdoor mobility rehabilitation intervention for stroke patients. DESIGN: Multicentre, parallel-group randomised controlled trial, with two groups allocated at a 1 : 1 ratio plus qualitative participant interviews. SETTING: Fif

Sequins, sass, and sisterhood: an exploration of older women's belly dancing.

Disempowering stereotypes plague public perceptions of older women's bodies, particularly within Western contemporary societies. Consequently, as women age, their bodies often become sources of shame, discomfort, and ridicule. Belly dance, as a form of recreative leisure, provides a unique and somewhat unexpected space for women to subvert such perceptions. Based on qualitative interviews with older American women who belly dance, this article examines the ways in which this form of recreation provides participants a means of (re)gaining mobility, (re)claiming social space, (re)building social

Cognitive bias modification for threat interpretations: using passive Mobile Sensing to detect intervention effects in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder is associated with distinct mobility patterns (e.g., increased time spent at home compared to non-anxious individuals), but we know little about if these patterns change following interventions. The ubiquity of GPS-enabled smartphones offers new opportunities to assess the benefits of mental health interventions beyond self-reported data. OBJECTIVES: This pre-registered study (https://osf.io/em4vn/?view_only=b97da9ef22df41189f1302870fdc9dfe) assesses the impact of a brief, online cognitive training intervention for threat interpretations using passively-col

[Purpose of Using Mobility Scooters as Transportation Devices for Community-dwelling Elderly People and Changes in Their Daily Life].

Elderly people need a means to be able to move at their own will in order to stay socially active. One of the means of transportation is a mobility scooter. The purpose of this study was to find out how community-dwelling elderly people came to use a mobility scooter as a means of transportation and how they use it in their daily lives. We conducted a semi-structured interview with four participants regarding their background and actual experience of using a mobility scooter, and analyzed the data qualitatively and descriptively in three categories: Reason for Using a mobility scooter; Safe Us

Human mobility and outbreak origins in epidemic spread: Insights from agent-based modeling.

Human mobility is a key driver of early epidemic spread, and restricting travel remains one of the principal non-pharmaceutical interventions. To better understand how infections propagate through real-world mobility networks, it is essential to disaggregate their components and characterize the functional relationships between mobility flows and epidemic metrics. Here we introduce transCovasim, an agent-based extension of Covasim that explicitly couples parallel city simulations via inter-city traveler exchange while preserving the initial social network structure within each population, enab

Navigating Aging and Social Bonds: How Virtual Networks Shape Friendships Among Older Adult Women.

Friendships in later life play a crucial role in providing emotional support, social interaction, and a sense of belonging, particularly for older adults who lack family support. Traditionally, friendships were maintained through face-to-face interactions, phone calls, and written letters. However, with the advent of digital technology, virtual networks have emerged as vital tools in sustaining these connections, particularly for older adults with limited mobility or geographical separation. This study examined the advantages, challenges, and emotional impact of virtual friendships in later li

Physiological Response to Social Evaluative Threat in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was employed to study response to social evaluative threat in male adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, n = 21) and typical development (n = 13). Participants wore a mobile electrocardiogram to collect heart rate data. There were significant group effects on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a measure of parasympathetic nervous system function, with lower values in ASD (F = 4.97). Bivariate correlations also showed a significant relationship between parent reports of social problems and RSA response to the TSST (r = -0.586). These findings sugge
