Three-year trajectories of social networks, face-to-face interactions, and non-face-to-face interactions among community-dwelling older adults in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic: Otassha study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the trajectories of social networks and interactions among older Japanese individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: We used data from a cohort of community-dwelling older individuals from the Otassha study's 2019-2022 survey. Participants comprised 606 older individuals who participated in the 2019 survey and were followed up at least once. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Social networks were assessed using the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6), whereas social interactions were assessed by the frequency of face-to-face or non-face-to-face contact with non

Functional connectivity strength and topology differences in social phobia adolescents with and without ADHD comorbidity.

Social phobia (SP) is associated with changes in functional connectivity strength and topology. However, reported changes have been heterogeneous due to small sample sizes, inconsistent methodologies, and comorbidities, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which has a high comorbidity rate with SP. Furthermore, there are few studies looking at SP in an adolescent population, a critical period for the development of the social brain. This project focuses on functional connectivity strength and topological differences in social phobia patients with and without ADHD comorbidit

Beyond Neighbors: Social Capital and Self-Empowerment Among Older Adults Diagnosed with HIV Late.

Older people with HIV (those aged ≥ 50 years) are living longer due to advances in HIV and chronic disease treatment. Social capital is often associated with better HIV clinical outcomes, such as high adherence to medication rates. However, this group is experiencing disrupted social connectedness related to shrinking social networks, which may impact their quality of life. We conducted in-depth interviews via web conferencing among a sample of (n = 18) older people diagnosed with HIV late and attending care at two HIV clinics in New Haven, CT, between February 2020 and July 2021. We employed

Peripheral Positions and Reachability of Casual Sexual Partners in Egocentric Networks Among Sexual and Gender Minorities.

BACKGROUND: Casual sexual partners (CSP) involve non-monogamous partnerships, limited personal disclosure, and sexual behaviors that could facilitate HIV transmission. Their peripheral positions in social networks may limit intervention reach but also create unique bridging opportunities for prevention efforts. METHODS: Egocentric network data were collected from sexual and gender minority participants (egos) in Charlotte, North Carolina from 2023 to 2025. We compared CSPs' demographic characteristics and structural positions in networks with those of other social contacts (alters), including

Emotion regulation strategies and their associations with social and emotional loneliness: A network approach.

ABSTRACTLoneliness, increasingly recognised as a global public health concern, comprises two related but distinguishable dimensions: emotional (EL) and social loneliness (SL). This study examined how EL and SL relate to cognitive and behavioural emotion regulation strategies, using a network analysis method to explore their affective and regulatory profiles. A cross-sectional sample of 1,215 Polish university students (76.8% female, Mage = 21.64) completed the six-item De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale and the Loneliness-Related Emotion Regulation Scale. Results suggest that EL was strongly as

Social Isolation, Acculturative Stress, and Resilience Among Older Asian Indian Immigrants in the United States: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and loneliness are increasingly recognized as public health concerns for aging populations, yet the experiences of older Asian Indian immigrants in the United States (US) remain understudied. This qualitative study explored how immigration, acculturation, and changes in social networks shape isolation, loneliness, and resilience among older Asian Indian immigrants. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 29 Asian Indian immigrants aged 50 years and older in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling with suppor

Movement patterns, social dynamics, and the evolution of cooperation.

The structure of social interactions influences many aspects of social life, including the spread of information and behavior, and the evolution of social phenotypes. After dispersal, organisms move around throughout their lives, and the patterns of their movement influence their social encounters over the course of their lifespan. Though both space and mobility are known to influence social evolution, there is little analysis of the influence of specific movement patterns on evolutionary dynamics. We explored the effects of random movement strategies on the evolution of cooperation using an a

Gender-Specific Networks in the Relationship Between Time Perspective and Short-Form Video Addiction Among Chinese Adolescents.

Short-form video addiction (SFVA) is increasingly prevalent among adolescents and closely related to time perspective, yet their associations at the symptom and dimensional levels, particularly gender differences, remain underexplored. This study applied network analysis to examine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between time perspective dimensions and SFVA symptoms in Chinese adolescents, with attention to gender-specific patterns. A total of 1, 580 Chinese adolescents (55.1% female; Mage = 15.86 ± 0.80 at T1) completed measures on two occasions at 6-month intervals. Cross-secti

The impact of autism on the relations between social anxiety, camouflaging, and depression in Taiwanese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Both camouflaging and social anxiety are adolescence-emerging phenomenon, rooted in social situations, and associated with mental health. The directionality between camouflaging and social anxiety in autistic versus non-autistic adolescents is underexplored. This study aims to investigate the inter-relations between camouflaging, social anxiety, and depression, and the moderating role of autism diagnosis on these inter-relations. METHODS: A total of 205 Taiwanese adolescents (100 autistic, 105 non-autistic) completed self-reported measures, including the Camouflaging Autistic Trai

Polysubstance use among youth experiencing homelessness: The role of trauma, mental health, and social network composition.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is common among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH). However, less is known about the use of multiple substances (polysubstance use), or factors associated with polysubstance use among YEH. The present study sought to identify subgroups of YEH based on their recent polysubstance use behavior, and investigate traumatic experiences, mental health and social network composition as predictors. METHODS: YEH (N = 1,032; Mage = 21.3) from three drop-in centers in Los Angeles completed an in-person survey and social network interview between October 2011 and June 2013. Lat

Psychosocial factors discriminate multidimensional clinical groups of chronic low back pain patients.

Previous studies have empirically defined clinical subgroups of chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients, based on differing patterns of pain, disability and emotional distress. Because these identified groups generally are comparable in terms of physical and demographic variables, variation in functional status cannot be adequately explained by medical or social factors. In the present study we evaluated whether other psychosocial factors (stress, coping attempts, and satisfaction with social supports) might differentiate the observed groups. A discriminate function analysis indicated that ratin

Sports tourism as a pathway to older adults' psychological well-being: a dual-pathway model integrating broaden-and-build and social identity perspectives.

This study explores how sports tourism is associated with older adults' eudaimonic well-being through dual psychological mechanisms. Drawing on Broaden-and-Build Theory and Social Identity Theory, the research examines an emotion pathway in which positive emotions and sense of physical challenge achievement are linked to psychological resources, and an identity pathway in which sports group identification is linked to positive age identity. Survey data from 467 older Chinese sports tourism participants were analyzed using PLS-SEM and artificial neural network analysis. PLS-SEM results provide

Increased functional connectivity with puberty in the mentalising network involved in social emotion processing.

This article is part of a Special Issue "Puberty and Adolescence". There is increasing evidence that puberty plays an important role in the structural and functional brain development seen in adolescence, but little is known of the pubertal influence on changes in functional connectivity. We explored how pubertal indicators (salivary concentrations of testosterone, oestradiol and DHEA; pubertal stage; menarcheal status) relate to functional connectivity between components of a mentalising network identified to be engaged in social emotion processing by our prior work, using psychophysiological

The relationship between interpersonal emotional regulation and psychological resilience in nursing undergraduates: a cross-sectional study and network analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Nursing students are more likely to have mental health problems due to the influence of many social environment factors, such as busy professional courses, difficult balance of learning and practice and complex and changeable clinical work environment. Psychological resilience, as a well-known protective factor, plays an important role in maintaining students' mental health. At the same time, from the perspective of social interaction, the particularity of close interpersonal contact (including colleague relationship, nurse-patient relationship, etc.) in clinical practi

Social support coping strategies among sub-Saharan African refugees: A systematic review and meta-synthesis.

Social support is a key coping resource; its specific role for refugees from sub-Saharan Africa in high-income settings remains poorly understood. This systematic review synthesises existing evidence on the sources of social support and how these networks aid coping during resettlement. We applied an optimised search strategy to identify studies examining social support among sub-Saharan African refugees across six academic indexing databases. We then undertook a meta-synthesis of the identified studies. This involved the use of meta-thematic analysis of the interpretations and quotes presente

Social networks, secondary syringe exchange, and opioid agonist therapy retention among people who inject drugs in Hartford, CT.

BACKGROUND: Opioid agonist therapies (OAT) and  harm reduction such as syringe service programs (SSP) have been shown to be effective in preventing adverse outcomes such as overdose deaths, HIV and Hepatitis C infections among people who inject drugs (PWID). The importance of social network influence on disease transmission is well established, yet the interplay between harm reduction and network structures is, generally, not well understood. This study aims to analyze how social networks can mediate the harm reduction effects associated with secondary exchange through syringe service programs
