The fear of others: a pilot study of social anxiety processes in paranoia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is good reason to consider the role of social anxiety processes in paranoia; both the research and clinical literature indicate significant overlap between the two presentations. The aim of this study was to explore cognition and behaviour that are typically associated with social phobia, in people with paranoia, and then to draw out theoretical and clinical implications. METHOD: We used a cross-sectional between-subjects design to compare participants with persecutory delusions (without social phobia), social phobia, a clinical control group with panic disorder, an

How should we measure social disadvantage in clinic settings?

BACKGROUND: Despite a large research literature supporting their validity, deprivation indices derived from census data have not been routinely applied to clinic populations. METHOD: A case-note sample of 201 cases was examined, to identify whether such data (Jarman indices) predicted presenting disability separately from diagnostic class (behaviour, emotional, mixed, other, and no diagnosable disorder), or conventional clinic measures of social adversity (ICD-10 psychosocial diagnostic codes). RESULTS: Jarman index scores predicted disability in behaviour disorders or other disorders. Conve

Relationship between social capital and post-partum antiretroviral therapy adherence among women living with HIV in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is crucial for preventing vertical transmission of HIV and maternal deaths. While the literature is replete with studies on ART adherence, the role of social capital in adherence to ART is less studied. Drawing from the social cognitive theory, this study examines the relationship between social capital and post-partum adherence to ART. METHODS: We analysed data from 481 post-partum women with HIV in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Adherence to ART was measured using a validated scale, capturing self-reported medication-taking behaviours.

Subjective word-finding complaints in older adults: Development and preliminary psychometric evaluation of a novel self-reported questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: Subjective word-finding complaints (SWFC) are among the most frequent cognitive complaints in cognitively unimpaired older adults (CU). However, no comprehensive tools currently exist to assess this phenomenon. This study aimed to conduct a preliminary psychometric evaluation of a novel SWFC questionnaire, better characterize SWFC, and establish their demographic/clinical correlates. METHODS: 287 older adults (192 CU, 95 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI)) from the PREVENT-AD cohort completed a novel 29-item SWFC questionnaire available in French and English. Internal consistenc

"What I believe is true": Belief-confirming reasoning bias in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research shows that people tend to consider believable conclusions as valid and unbelievable conclusions as invalid (belief bias). When applied to anxiogenic beliefs, this belief bias could well hinder the correction of dysfunctional convictions. Previous work has shown that high socially anxious students indeed display such fear-confirming, belief biased, reasoning. A critical next question is whether these findings translate to a clinical population of people with social anxiety disorder (SAD). We test whether (i) patients with SAD show belief bias with regard to S

An evaluation of paid social media advertising and traditional advertising for addiction research recruitment.

BACKGROUND: Social media advertising may improve efficiency and reduce costs for research recruitment. However, few studies comparing social media-based and traditional recruitment methods aimed to recruit people with a history of substance use. METHODS: Between May 2022 and September 2024, we enrolled people in treatment and/or recovery from an opioid use disorder into a randomized trial of a mobile app-based peer recovery support program with six months of follow-up. We used multiple recruitment strategies including paid social media advertising (Facebook, Craigslist) and traditional method

My child is growing and now? Exploring the environmental needs of children with congenital Zika syndrome according to their caregivers' perceptions.

INTRODUCTION: Promoting social inclusion of children with congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZS) is challenging, mostly, when there is a transport problem, low access to information and a long distance between the house and health services. Participation can be understood as involvement in a life situation and is strongly influenced by physical, social and attitudinal environmental factors; however, was still little explored in the case of children with CZS. In this sense, this study aimed to explore the perception of caregivers about the environmental needs of children with CZS, differentiating

The meaning of participation for children in Malawi: insights from children and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Global rates of childhood disability are high and are estimated through tools that focus on impairment, functioning and activity. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health has promoted a framework to define disability more broadly and to include participation. New outcome measures have now been created to assess participation of children with disabilities for use in research and clinical practice. In order to use these in other cultural contexts, the validity of concepts and tools developed should be evaluated prior to use. We aim to create a tool that

Building and Testing of a Conceptual Model to Describe and Measure the Health of People as Affected by Post-traumatic Stress Disorder During Social Unrest: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling.

BACKGROUND: Social unrest affects people's health and well-being. People's health-related needs during social unrest are concerns in both research and clinical practice. This study aimed to build and test a framework to describe and understand the health status and needs of people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during social unrest. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional survey. A total of 460 people who had experienced post-traumatic distress as a result of the social unrest in 2019 and 2020 were included. A conceptual model comprised four essential areas, namely posttraumatic

Calculable People? Standardising Assessment Guidelines for Alzheimer's Disease in 1980s Britain.

This article shows how funding research on Alzheimer's disease became a priority for the British Medical Research Council (MRC) in the late 1970s and 1980s, thanks to work that isolated new pathological and biochemical markers and showed that the disease affected a significant proportion of the elderly population. In contrast to histories that focus on the emergence of new and competing theories of disease causation in this period, I argue that concerns over the use of different assessment methods ensured the MRC's immediate priority was standardising the ways in which researchers identified a

Sympathetic surgery for psychiatry. Case report.

One of the authors has, for many years, operated patients suffering from social phobias by using compression block on the sympathetic nerve (1). The Finnish health insurance system has not accepted this treatment as valid for reimbursement. We planned a research based on a design of pre- and post-surgery interviews conducted by a psychiatrist. Data collection was started in 1997. The sample now consists of 45 persons, of whom 20 have also been interviewed after the operation. The results are fascinatingly good. Only one person did not benefit from the operation. We present two illustrating exa

The role of perceived social support for outcomes for the long-term health condition hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Social connection is a key health determinant yet remains under-researched in long-term conditions marked by isolation such as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). Individuals with hEDS are especially vulnerable due to the condition's complex and often misunderstood symptoms. This study presents the first high-powered quantitative investigation (n = 401) of perceived social support and companionship in hEDS. Using validated, theory-informed measures, we examined whether loneliness, support from family and friends, and dog guardianship predicted physical, mental, and social wellbeing outc

Psychometric Properties of the Greek Version of the Relational Provisions Loneliness Questionnaire (RPLQ) in Early Adolescents.

BackgroundLoneliness during adolescence has increased worldwide in recent years and has been consistently associated with a broad range of adverse psychosocial outcomes. The availability of valid and reliable measures is essential for the early identification of loneliness and for the rigorous evaluation of intervention effectiveness. Nevertheless, multidimensional, psychometrically validated instruments for assessing loneliness in Greek adolescents remain limited.ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the Relational Provisions

BODY-Q-7D Measures Consensus-Based Patient-Reported Outcomes for the Management of Obesity Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: A global multidisciplinary consensus initiative identified eight patient-reported outcome domains important in obesity care: self-esteem; physical, mental, and social health; eating; stigma; body image; and excess skin. Several of these domains are not represented in generic preference-based measures typically used in weight loss research. We developed the BODY-Q-7 Dimensions (BODY-Q-7D) to provide a valuation-ready framework for a preference-based instrument. METHODS: Concepts from the BODY-Q were used to inform the development of items that covered the eight consensus initiative

The Childhood Autism Spectrum Test (CAST): Spanish adaptation and validation.

The Childhood Autism Spectrum Test (CAST; Scott, Baron-Cohen, Bolton & Brayne, 2002) has proved to be a good test for screening autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and social communication problems. This study provides evidence on its psychometric properties, describe its validity for screening and provides data on its discriminative capabilities in a Spanish sample of 4-12 year-old children from community and clinical settings (N = 1460 and 36, respectively). Factorial and convergent validity is also assessed. The full Spanish version with a cut-off score of 15 presented a high sensitivity (83.9%

Development and testing of screening indicators for psychological abuse of older people.

Abuse of older people is a serious and growing social problem. Although physical abuse is the easiest to identify, covert acts of psychological abuse are of concern to elders' health care providers. The assessment of psychological abuse in elders is an important, but difficult, aspect of concern for these older adults. This article describes the development and testing of a screening instrument for elders' psychological abuse. The Elders' Psychological Abuse Scale (EPAS) was developed from many abuse indicators that have been identified in past research and from inputs from a focus group discu
