1-Sarcosine, 8-isoleucine angiotensin II (Sar1-Ile8-AII) was infused intravenously in 5 normal volunteers and 66 subjects with various hypertensive, fluid and electrolyte disorders. Changes of blood pressure (BP), plasma renin activity (PRA) and plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) were studied. In normal subjects, Sar1-Ile-AII showed pressor (agonistic) activity, which was related to both dosage and sodium intake. Neat chlorosulfonic acid reacts with anhydrous sodium tungstate to give tungstate sulfuric acid (TSA), a new dibasic inorganic solid acid in which two sulfuric acid molecules connect to a tungstate moiety via a covalent bond. Novel artemisinin derivatives bearing Mannich base group were prepared and tested for their antimalarial activity. These water-soluble artemisinin derivatives were more stable than sodium artesunate and few compounds were found to be more active against Plasmodium berghei in mice than artesunic acid by oral administration. Two most potent derivatives 17b and 17d were examined for their antimalarial activity against Plasmodium knowlesi in rhesus monkeys.

The treatment of onchocerciasis using diethylcarbamazine and suramin sodium, which can kill different stages of the parasite, Onchocerca volvulus, remains unsatisfactory. Recent studies have more clearly defined the serious limitations of the existing forms of treatment. The effects of tributyltin and sodium cyanide on hemolysis in human erythrocytes are described. Tributyltin has a sharp cut-off concentration for induction of hemolysis. A 5 microM concentration of tributyltin induces hemolysis and 1 microM or less does not in erythrocyte suspensions with 2.3 X 10(8) cells per ml. The kinetics for tributyltin-induced hemolysis are sigmoidal indicating a complex molecular mechanism leading to lysis.
