Duodenal hemangiopericytoma: CT and MRI findings.

Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a rare mesenchymal tumor generally occurring in adults and originating from the pericytes. The tumor more commonly affects the soft tissues of the extremities, the pelvis, and the retroperitoneum. We describe the computed tomographic and magnetic resonance appearance of a patient affected by HPC of the duodenum.

The use of free fat tissue transfer from the buccal fat pad to obtain and maintain primary closure and to improve soft tissue thickness at bone-augmented sites: technique presentation and report of case series.

PURPOSE: Atrophic ridges usually have both hard and soft tissue shortages, and bone augmentation can make soft tissue closure difficult. The aim of this case series is to present a new method utilizing transfer of free fat tissue grafts (FFG) from the buccal fat bad (BFP) during bone augmentation to enhance immediate primary soft tissue closure and improve long-term soft tissue thickness and quality at the recipient site. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with moderate to severe ridge atrophy in different regions of the jaws were treated over a 4-year period with bone augmentation and FFG. The

Computed tomography of spinal tuberculosis.

The computed tomographic (CT) features of nine documented cases of spinal tuberculosis are analyzed. The mechanisms of vertebral involvement are reviewed. The ability of CT to facilitate the diagnosis as well as to delineate the extent of soft tissue involvement is emphasized. The need for increased alertness to the diagnosis of tuberculosis is stressed.

Radiographic/MR Imaging Correlation of the Elbow.

This article covers the use of radiographs and MR imaging for diagnosing elbow disorders. It concentrates on these techniques, but other imaging techniques including computed tomography, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine are discussed when clinically important. The article covers the use of imaging for specific symptoms including lateral, medial, anterior, posterior and generalized elbow pain, focal swelling, restriction of movement, locking, and neurologic symptoms. Radiographs have been the mainstay of initial imaging of the elbow, while ultrasound examination is often used for soft tissue di

A Case of Postpartum Ovarian Vein Thrombosis.

Ovarian vein thrombosis (OVT) is an rare condition, which can present in the postpartum period. We present a case of a 35-year-old female who presented with right lower quadrant pain and fever. Her computed tomography (CT) abdomen revealed a dilated right ovarian vein with soft tissue attenuation material in its lumen that extended into the inferior vena cava, along with fat stranding of the surrounding soft tissues signifying thrombophlebitis. She was treated with enoxaparin and piperacillin-tazobactam, which lead to a resolution of the thrombus. Our case highlights the importance of prompt d

Pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate: major tumor in a minor gland.

Salivary gland tumors are a relatively rare and morphologically diverse group of lesions. Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor of the salivary gland that consists of a combination of epithelial and mesenchymal elements. The tumor most commonly arises from the parotid (60-70%) or submandibular glands. It develops less frequently in a minor salivary gland, presenting as an intraoral mass depend on the soft palate. We describe a case of benign pleomorphic adenoma of soft palate in a 45 year old female with computed tomography and histopathological findings. This patient presented in ENT departme

Fluid-induced osteolysis: modelling and experiments.

A model to calculate bone resorption driven by fluid flow at the bone-soft tissue interface is developed and used as a basis for computer calculations, which are compared to experiments where bone is subjected to fluid flow in a rat model. Previous models for bone remodelling calculations have been based on the state of stress, strain or energy density of the bone tissue as the stimulus for remodelling. We believe that there is experimental support for an additional pathway where an increase in the amount of the cells directly involved in bone removal, the osteoclasts, is caused by fluid press

Cat scratch disease with epidural extension while on antimicrobial treatment.

We report the first case of a child with an epidural abscess caused by Bartonella henselae. This case is unique in that the diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the abscess fluid. A 3-year-old male was admitted with a 1-week history of fever and lower back pain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar spine revealed a paraspinal soft tissue abnormality extending from the T(12) to the L(4) level, and a computed tomography (CT) scan of the lumbar spine showed osteomyelitis at the T(12) level with soft tissue changes. B. henselae serology showed an IgG titer of 1:2

Fat-containing soft-tissue masses of the extremities.

The authors review the radiologic spectrum of fat-containing soft-tissue masses of the extremities, with emphasis on computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and pathologic correlation. These masses include both common and uncommon, benign and malignant lesions, such as lipoma, intramuscular and intermuscular lipoma, neural fibrolipoma, lipoblastoma, lipomatosis, hibernoma, hemangioma, elastofibroma, and liposarcoma, as well as lesions that may mimic fat-containing soft-tissue masses. Imaging studies of fat-containing lesions will often allow a specific presumptive diagnosis. When a sp

Beyond skeletal studies: A computational analysis of nasal airway function in climate adaptation.

OBJECTIVES: Ecogeographic variation in human nasal anatomy has historically been analyzed on skeletal morphology and interpreted in the context of climatic adaptations to respiratory air-conditioning. Only a few studies have analyzed nasal soft tissue morphology, actively involved in air-conditioning physiology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used in vivo computer tomographic scans of (N = 146) adult individuals from Cambodia, Chile, Russia, and Spain. We conducted (N = 438) airflow simulations during inspiration using computational fluid dynamics to analyze the air-conditioning capacities of the

Virtual Surgical Planning and Customized Subperiosteal Implant for Reconstruction of Maxillary Defect After Oncological Resection.

Reconstructing defects after jaw tumor removal is difficult because of the complex facial skeleton, which affects patient nutrition and self-confidence. Traditional methods like iliac bone or fibula grafts take a long time and may raise aesthetic issues. Advancements in computer-aided three-dimensional (3D) modeling allow precise surgical planning, leading to more symmetrical reconstructions. Moreover, the application of custom-designed prostheses, similar to joint prostheses used in joint surgery, offers promising outcomes, particularly in cases involving the removal of the ramus and temporom

Intraoperative 3D imaging of the facial skeleton using the SIREMOBIL Iso-C3D.

OBJECTIVES: With respect to high-contrast structures, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) offers an alternative imaging modality to computed tomography (CT), requiring less radiation exposure. The C-arm system SIREMOBIL Iso-C3D for three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction has made this modality available for intraoperative use. This paper presents the first intraoperative images of the facial skeleton using the SIREMOBIL Iso-C3D. METHODS: Cases of a zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture, a mandibular angle fracture and a bimaxillary repositioning osteotomy are described to demonstrate the applic

CT and MR findings in parameningeal leukaemic masses.

This study presents the clinical and imaging findings in seven patients with parameningeal leukaemic masses: four adults with granulocytic sarcoma and three children with soft tissue masses from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were helpful in detecting these masses and in showing their extent. Magnetic resonance was particularly valuable in demonstrating abnormal bone marrow in the adult patients with granulocytic sarcoma. Computed tomography was valuable in demonstrating leukaemic relapse in the children when examination of CSF or bone marrow

[Reconstructive orbital surgery].

BACKGROUND: In complex orbital reconstructions ideal positioning of the bony buttress and surrounding soft tissue is a prerequisite for an aesthetic and functional result. The use of computer-assisted surgery can support the surgeon before and during the reconstruction procedure and facilitate quality control processes. This is illustrated using three clinical examples. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The areas of interest (bony defect areas, surrounding tissues) are segmented in a 3D image series. In most cases, the contralateral non-affected side can serve as the reference in virtual reconstruction.

Prenatal detection and postnatal management of an intranasal glioma.

Nasal gliomas are rare benign congenital midline tumors composed of heterotopic neuroglial tissue. They have potential for intracranial extension through a bony defect in the skull base. Neuroimaging is essential for identifying nasal lesions and for determining their exact location and any possible intracranial extension. Computed tomography is often the initial imaging study obtained because it provides good visualization of the bony landmarks of the skull base; it is not, however, well suited for soft tissue imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging has better soft tissue resolution and may be th

Osteoid Osteoma of the Atlas in a Boy: Clinical and Imaging Features-A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Osteoid osteoma is a benign osteoblastic tumor, quite uncommon in the spine. We report a case of an osteoid osteoma involving the atlas in a 6-year-old boy, who presented with suboccipital pain and torticollis. Initial radiological findings were ambiguous as magnetic resonance imaging showed mainly edema of upper cervical soft tissues. The subsequent computed tomography depicted a lesion of left lamina of C1. As conservative treatment failed, the lesion was surgically resected and the patient became pain free. To our knowledge, this is the first case of osteoid osteoma involving the atlas asso
