Exploration of non-phytopathogenic Aspergillus spp. isolates recovered from soil and compost as potential source of bioactive metabolites for potato Fusarium dry rot control.

During storage, infected potato tubers by Fusarium species leads to significant losses. Searching natural-based alternatives to chemical fungicides for the control of tuber dry rot pathogens is becoming essential. Nine Aspergillus spp. (A. niger, A. terreus, A. flavus, and Aspergillus sp.) isolates, recovered from soil and compost samples, were explored and evaluated for their ability to suppress Fusarium sambucinum the main causal agent of potato tuber dry rot disease in Tunisia. All conidial suspensions of Aspergillus spp. tested and their cell-free culture filtrates had significantly inhibi

Pseudomonas putida mediates bacterial killing, biofilm invasion and biocontrol with a type IVB secretion system.

Many bacteria utilize contact-dependent killing machineries to eliminate rivals in their environmental niches. Here we show that the plant root colonizer Pseudomonas putida strain IsoF is able to kill a wide range of soil and plant-associated Gram-negative bacteria with the aid of a type IVB secretion system (T4BSS) that delivers a toxic effector into bacterial competitors in a contact-dependent manner. This extends the range of targets of T4BSSs-so far thought to transfer effectors only into eukaryotic cells-to prokaryotes. Bioinformatic and genetic analyses showed that this killing machine i

Development of a multiplex TaqMan qPCR targeting unique genomic regions for the specific and sensitive detection of Pectobacterium species and P. parmentieri.

AIM: The newly defined species Pectobacterium parmentieri has emerged as an aggressive pathogen that causes soft rot and blackleg diseases on potato and has been widely disseminated across the globe, jeopardizing the productivity and potato food safety. The implementation of a fast and accurate detection tool is imperative to control, monitor and prevent further spread of these pathogens. The objective of this work was to develop a specific and sensitive multiplex TaqMan qPCR to detect P. parmentieri and distinguish it from all known Pectobacterium species. A universal internal control was inc

A Small Cysteine-Rich Phytotoxic Protein of Phytophthora capsici Functions as Both Plant Defense Elicitor and Virulence Factor.

Small cysteine-rich (SCR) proteins, including fungal avirulence proteins, play important roles in pathogen-plant interactions. SCR protein-encoding genes have been discovered in the genomes of Phytophthora pathogens but their functions during pathogenesis remain obscure. Here, we report the characterization of one Phytophthora capsici SCR protein (namely, SCR82) with similarity to Phytophthora cactorum phytotoxic protein PcF. The scr82 gene has 10 allelic sequences in the P. capsici population. Homologs of SCR82 were not identified in fungi or other organisms but in Phytophthora relative speci

Chemical Stability of Lycopene in Processed Products: A Review of the Effects of Processing Methods and Modern Preservation Strategies.

Lycopene, one of the most dominant carotenoids in a person's diet, is a well-known natural compound that has protective effects against chronic diseases. Industrial and domestic processing and storage conditions significantly influence retention and isomerization of lycopene; thus, in recent years, great attention has been given for their preservative effects of lycopene. This review highlights recent strategies that have been developed to preserve lycopene in processed products, especially in tomato pulp, puree, paste, and juice. The key factors influencing lycopene degradation and isomerizat

Exogenous nitric oxide alleviates sulfur deficiency-induced oxidative damage in tomato seedlings.

Despite numerous reports on the role of nitric oxide (NO) in regulating plants growth and mitigating different environmental stresses, its participation in sulfur (S) -metabolism remains largely unknown. Therefore, we studied the role of NO in S acquisition and S-assimilation in tomato seedlings under low S-stress conditions by supplying NO to the leaves of S-sufficient and S-deficient seedlings. S-starved plants exhibited a substantial decreased in plant growth attributes, photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll (Chl) and other photosynthetic parameters, and activity of enzymes involved in Chl bio

Disruption of elements uptake due to excess chromium in Indian medicinal plants.

Chromium and its compounds may cause disturbance in the nutrient level of the plants. Iron, manganese, copper, and zinc are essential nutrient elements and required for balanced growth and development of plants, but chromium uptake sometimes disturbed their concentration in plants. Therefore, in the present paper, an effort has been made to observe the effect of different levels of Cr on nutrient uptake of Phyllanthus amarus and Solanum nigrum, the medicinally important plants of indigenous systems of medicine having hepatoprotective and diuretic properties. The study revealed that Cr causes s…

Sand fly feeding on noxious plants: a potential method for the control of leishmaniasis.

The sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi transmits Leishmania major, which causes cutaneous leishmaniasis, in vast regions of the Old World. In addition to blood, the sand flies feed on plants. In a study of this diet, we observed that one night of feeding on branches of Solanum jasminoides, Ricinus communis, or Bougainvillea glabra drastically shortened the life span of the sand flies. Flowering B. glabra attracted P. papatasi in the field. Nevertheless, in the region endemic for L. major in yards abounding with vector sand flies, the number of P. papatasi trapped near hedges of B. glabra was eight …

Neuroactive compounds in tomatoes: metabolic fate during in vitro digestion and colonic fermentation.

Neurodegenerative diseases are hard to treat, and their progression is linked to diet and the gut microbiota. Tomatoes contain potentially neuroactive compounds, but their fate during digestion and colonic fermentation remains unclear. This study tracked neuroactive compounds and fecal fatty acids (<C12) during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and fecal fermentation. Conditions included a fecal blank, digested inulin, digested tomato, tomato with neuro-disrupting compounds, and individual neuroprotective compounds. Targeted analyses and linear mixed-effects models showed samples were primar

Drying-induced structural transitions in amyloid-like potato protein fibrils.

Amyloid-like fibrils derived from plant proteins are increasingly investigated as sustainable, label-friendly building blocks for food-grade functional materials. In this study, we clarified the structural transition of potato protein fibrils formed under combined acidic and thermal conditions and examined how dehydration routes govern their post-processing integrity. Fibrillation was verified across the tested concentration range by ThT fluorescence and Congo Red binding, together with the development of β-sheet-rich assemblies and shifts in surface charge. Among the tested systems, 2.5% (w/v

Starch and tuber traits of diploid potato lines B26 and B100 and their hybrids.

Diploid potato breeding enables faster genetic improvement via selection against deleterious alleles in inbred lines, unlike breeding by intercrossing tetraploid varieties. Starch is the major source of calories in potato tubers, but the starch properties of diploid lines have rarely been reported. In this study, we provide a comprehensive characterisation of tuber and starch properties in two diploid lines that are early isolates from the Solynta breeding program, B26 and B100, and their F1 hybrids. B100 produced fewer, but larger tubers compared to B26, and both diploid lines produced tubers
