Cortical facilitation of somatosensory inputs using gravity-related tactile information in humans with vestibular hypofunction.

A few years after their bilateral vestibular loss, patients usually show a motor repertoire that is almost back to normal. This recovery is thought to involve an upregulation of the visual and proprioceptive information that compensates for the lack of vestibular information. Here, we investigated whether plantar tactile inputs, which provide body information relative to the ground and to the Earth vertical, contribute to this compensation. More specifically, we tested the hypothesis that somatosensory cortex response to electric stimulation of the plantar sole in standing adults will be great…

Improvement in Touch Sensation after Stroke is Associated with Resting Functional Connectivity Changes.

BACKGROUND: Distributed brain networks are known to be involved in facilitating behavioral improvement after stroke, yet few, if any, studie … scrimination was associated with stronger correlations at 6 months between contralesional secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) and inferior parietal cortex and middle temporal gyrus, and between contralesional thalamus and cerebellum. Somatosensory responses in normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer's disease.

As a part of a larger study of normal aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), which included patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), we i … contralateral secondary somatosensory source across diagnostic category. These results suggest that somatosensory cortex is affected early in the progression of AD and may have some consequence on behavioral and functional measures.

Laryngeal vibration as a non-invasive neuromodulation therapy for spasmodic dysphonia.

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is an incurable focal dystonia of the larynx that impairs speech and communication. Vibro-tactile stimulation (VTS) alters afferent proprioceptive input to sensorimotor cortex that controls speech. This proof-of-concept study examined the effect of laryngeal VTS on speech quality and cortical activity in 13 SD participants who vocalized the vowel /a/ while receiving VTS for 29 minutes. In response to VTS, 9 participants (69%) exhibited a reduction of voice breaks and/or a meaningful increase in smoothed cepstral peak prominence, an acoustic measure of voice/speech qual

Structural and functional differences in the barrel cortex of Mecp2 null mice.

Functional deficits in sensory systems are commonly noted in neurodevelopmental disorders, such as the Rett syndrome (RTT). Defects in methy … e line, a popular animal model for the RTT. Such structural and functional anomalies in the primary somatosensory cortex may underlie orofacial tactile sensitivity issues and sensorimotor stereotypies characteristic of RTT.

RESULTS: Peripheral input could evoke PLP in amputees with chronic PLP (7/12), but not in amputees without a history of PLP (0/10). The amplitudes of the somatosensory components were comparable between amputees with and without PLP. In addition, …

Defective Somatosensory Inhibition and Plasticity Are Not Required to Develop Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Dystonia may have different neuroanatomical substrates and pathophysiology. This is supported by studies on the motor system showing, for instance, that plasticity is abnormal in idiopathic dystonia, but not in dystonia secondary to basal ganglia lesions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test whether somatosensory inhibition and plasticity abnormalities reported in patients with idiopathic dystonia also occur in patients with dystonia caused by basal ganglia damage. METHODS: Ten patients with acquired dystonia as a result of basal ganglia lesions and 12 healthy control sub

Abnormal brain structure implicated in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Recent studies suggest dysfunctional brain-gut interactions are involved in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia (FD). However, limit … s were observed between the Nepean Dyspepsia Index (NDI) and cortical thickness in the mPFC, second somatosensory cortex (SII), ACC and parahippocampus (paraHIPP). And significantly negative correlations were found between disease duration and the cortical thickness in the vlPFC, first somatosensory cortex (SI) and insula in FD patients. These findings suggest that FD …

Role of the medial parieto-occipital cortex in the control of reaching and grasping movements.

The medial parieto-occipital cortex is a central node in the dorsomedial visual stream. Recent physiological studies in the macaque monkey have demonstrated that the medial parieto-occipital cortex contains two areas, the visual area V6 and the visuomotor area V6A. Area V6 is a retinotopically organized visual area that receives form and motion information directly from V1 and is heavily connected with the other areas of the dorsal visual stream, including V6A. Area V6A is a bimodal visual/somatosensory area that elaborates visual information such as form, motion and space suitable for the con

Towards an understanding of somatosensory perturbation on covert speech production: a functional near infrared spectroscopy study.

INTRODUCTION: Recent initiatives have sought to understand the impact of somatosensory feedback during varying speech production tasks. The supramarginal gyrus (SMG) is a multi-function region that represents the somatosensory system and plays an essential role in the DIVA model via the generation and monitoring of novel motor commands. Here, we investigate the extent to which SMG activity is modulated via somatosensory perturbations (i.e., oral anesthesia via lidocaine and oral stimulation via lollipop) during covert production tasks. METHODS: Thirty adult participants completed two covert p

Synchronization of gamma oscillations increases functional connectivity of human hippocampus and inferior-middle temporal cortex during repetitive visuomotor events.

Do recency processes associated with repetitive sensorimotor events modulate the magnitude and functional coupling of brain rhythmicity in human temporal cortex? Intracranial stereo electroencephalographic activity (SEEG; 256 Hz sampling rate) was recorded from hippocampus, and inferior (BA20) and middle (BA21) temporal cortex in four epilepsy patients. The repetitive events were represented by predicted imperative somatosensory stimuli (CNV paradigm) triggering hand movements ("repetitive visuomotor") or counting ("repetitive counting"). The non-repetitive events were "rare" (P3 paradigm) som

Corticocortical neurons projecting to the medial and lateral banks of the middle suprasylvian sulcus in the cat: an experimental study with the horseradish peroxidase method.

Corticocortical afferents to both cortical walls of the cat middle suprasylvian sulcus (MSs area) were investigated by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). the visual cortex (V-I and V-II) projects to the medial wall of the MSs, the projection from V-II being heavier. The auditory cortex (A-I, A-II,. and Ep), including cortical walls of the dorsal part of the anterior and posterior ectosylvian sulci, sends fibers to the lateral wall of the MSs. Connections from the first auditory area (A-I) are heavier than from the second (A-II). In the rostral part of the MSs
