Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that disrupts cognitive function across multiple domains, particularly affecting language networks and speech production pathways in the brain. Patients demonstrate symptoms including aphasia, reduced syntactic complexity, and diminished verbal fluency that reflects underlying neural pathology in language-related cortical areas. Current detection methods rely on resource-intensive neuroimaging, invasive biomarker sampling, and extensive neuropsychological testing, creating substantial barriers to early diagnosis. While resear

PURPOSE: Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is widely used to assess dysphagia in acute care settings; however, there are currently no broadly accepted FEES standardized procedure and interpretation protocols. We identified a need to harmonize FEES practice across one acute care hospital speech-language pathology team with goals to improve consistency, interrater reliability, and clinical decision making.
METHOD: The Translating Evidence Into Practice model was used as a guide for harmonization. This model includes summarizing the evidence, identifying barriers to implementat…

PURPOSE: Misconceptions about dyslexia abound among the public and educators alike. Refutation texts have been used to change misconceptions about a variety of topics, mostly in science education. The purpose of this study was to determine whether reading a refutation text about dyslexia could improve knowledge of dyslexia among school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs).
METHOD: Participants were school-based SLPs (n = 37). They completed a pretest of knowledge of dyslexia, were randomly assigned to read a refutation text or comparison text about dyslexia, and then completed a posttest

PURPOSE: Videofluoroscopy is an invaluable tool in the study of swallowing physiology. It is not without risks, however, primarily from exposure to ionizing radiation. As such, regulation across states within the United States and institutional policies are in place to protect patients, research participants, and occupational users from the negative effects of radiation exposure. These regulations restrict those who can "push the button" to energize the x-ray machines during radiographic studies, typically to licensed physicians and radiologic technologists. While recognizing the importance of

PURPOSE: Scientific transparency and rigor are essential for the successful translation of knowledge in clinical research. However, the field of oropharyngeal dysphagia research lacks guidelines for methodological design and reporting, hindering accurate interpretation and replication. This article introduces the Framework for RigOr aNd Transparency In REseaRch on Swallowing (FRONTIERS), a new critical appraisal tool intended to support optimal study design and results reporting. The purpose of introducing FRONTIERS at this early phase is to invite pilot use of the tool and open commentary.

Evidence-based health care is now a reality within the national health service (NHS) and the randomised controlled trial (RCT) is the linchpin of this movement. In modern health care, there has also been a shift towards understanding client perspectives. With regard to clients' participation in research, much consideration has been given to ethical issues and barriers to participation. However, less attention has been paid to the participants' views of clinical trials and understanding how they construe the research. This paper reports a study of the attitudes of parents whose children took pa

The purpose of this study was to examine speech and language therapists' practices, and their perceptions of the knowledge and skills that they use in everyday clinical practice. The paper compares the knowledge and skills identified in a much larger consultative study of speech and language therapists' competence with the knowledge and skills identified by four speech and language therapists reflecting on a representative or 'typical' day in their working lives. This comparison between the outcome of a large survey and a more detailed ethnographic investigation of speech and language therapis

PURPOSE: Mounting research supports the use of motor-based intervention (e.g., Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing [DTTC]) for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), but large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are needed to better understand optimal treatment conditions. Partnering with community clinicians may help support recruitment and data collection for large groups of participants with CAS. However, to achieve this, rigorous training is needed to ensure high-fidelity treatment and adherence to research protocols. This work presents a multiphase process for training community

PURPOSE: There are multiple frameworks for goal writing that are applicable to the practice of speech-language pathology. Motor-based speech disorders are a subset of speech sound disorders that are thought to require specific elements of intervention that are typically not addressed in the traditional frameworks used in the clinical setting. The purpose of this tutorial is to review general approaches of goal writing and suggest additional elements that may be used to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of treatment for childhood motor speech disorders, specifically childhood apraxia of …

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify training gaps and continuing education (CE) needs for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in evaluating and treating children with cleft palate across and among areas of varying population density.
METHOD: An anonymous 35-question survey lasting approximately 10-15 min was created in Qualtrics based on a previously published study. The survey information and link were electronically distributed to American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-certified SLPs through ASHA listservs, social media, individual-state SLP organizations, and an

The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of Passavant's ridge in patients with history of cleft palate presenting with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) after primary palatal surgery. Twenty-five adult patients (mean age of 32 years), who wore a pharyngeal bulb prosthesis to correct VPI after primary palatoplasty participated in the study. Presence of Passavant's ridge was investigated in four conditions: prior to pharyngeal bulb for treatment of VPI (C1); during the molding of the pharyngeal bulb (C2); six months after the use of the pharyngeal bulb, but with the prosthe

The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to test the ability of normal children to discriminate the speech of children with repaired cleft palate from the speech of unaffected peers and (2) to compare these naive assessments of speech acceptability with the sophisticated assessments of speech pathologists. The study group (subjects) was composed of 21 children of school age (aged 8 to 12 years) who had undergone palatoplasty at a single cleft center and 16 matched controls. The listening team (student raters) was composed of 20 children who were matched to the subjects for age, sex, and other va

OBJECTIVES: To describe the phonoscopic evaluation, present a rationale for its use, and demonstrate its use in identifying laryngeal and vocal pathology.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
METHODS: One hundred consecutive cases of new patients referred to our voice clinic team were reviewed. Findings on laryngeal examination as reported by the referring otolaryngologist were compared with our findings on "phonoscopic" examination. The phonoscopic examination combines the traditional voice evaluation performed by speech-language pathologists with endoscopy, which is relatively new to the vo

OBJECTIVE: To present and test a production-matching method with external references, looking at the improvement of inter-rater variability of expert evaluations.
METHOD: It consists of adjusting quality attribute levels of a synthetic vowel for a simultaneous matching with the natural patient vowel (NPV) attributes. In an initial experiment, seven speech-language pathology (SLP) experts performed this task with the new method and evaluated the same NPV with the standard method. Targets were twelve NPVs with a variety of quality attribute combinations. In a second experiment, we employed the …

PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to elucidate the effects of repeated practice treatment on sound production accuracy in individuals with apraxia of speech (AOS) and aphasia. A secondary purpose was to determine if the addition of rate/rhythm control to treatment provided further benefits beyond those achieved with repeated practice.
METHOD: A single-subject design was employed with 10 speakers with chronic AOS and aphasia. Articulation accuracy served as the dependent measure. Participants received repeated practice treatment until a plateau in performance was observed or high levels

The most common otolaryngologic features associated with LMBBS include SNHL, speech and language disorders, and oral and dental abnormalities. Early otolaryngologic, audiologic, speech pathology, and dental evaluation of these individuals is recommended. This is the first reported case of bifid epiglottis, a rare congenital laryngeal anomaly, found in association with LMBBS. Most patients with bifid epiglottis have additional congenital anomalies, most commonly polysyndactyly. Polysyndactyly is a feature of both LMBBS and bifid epiglottis and may be an early hallmark for the presence of other
