Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated from chicken meat and giblets often produces staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) in non-refrigerated raw chicken livers.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is responsible for several difficult-to-treat infections and staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and enterotoxigenicity of MRSA in broiler chicken meat and giblets. A total of 5.5% (8/144) of the examined samples were contaminated with mecA positive/mecC negative MRSA, with staphylococcal counts of approximately 102 colony forming units (CFU)/g in breast, leg and gizzard samples and approximately 3.3 × 103 CFU/g in frozen liver samples. Most MRSA isolates (75%, 6/8) harboured the staphylo

Antistaphylococcal antibodies in dogs with recurrent staphylococcal pyoderma.

Staphylococcus intermedius skin infection (pyoderma) may be perpetuated in some dogs by a hypersensitivity reaction to staphylococcal organisms. Dogs with idiopathic superficial or deep recurrent staphylococcal skin infections may thus have quantitative differences in serum antistaphylococcal IgE antibodies compared with healthy dogs. To test this hypothesis, antistaphylococcal IgG and IgE antibodies were measured by ELISA in groups of dogs with idiopathic recurrent pyoderma, recurrent pyoderma secondary to atopic disease, non-recurrent pyoderma, and in healthy dogs. All groups of dogs with pr

[Clinical evaluation of a new oral cephem, cefprozil in children].

Cefprozil (CFPZ, BMY-28100) was evaluated for its efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetics in children. CFPZ was effective against streptococcal pharyngitis, pneumococcal lower respiratory tract infections, staphylococcal skin infections and Escherichia coli urinary tract infections, but was less effective against lower respiratory tract infections and otitis media due to Haemophilus influenzae. No adverse reactions were encountered in 46 cases treated with CFPZ. With a premeal administration of 7.5 mg/kg, the Cmax was approximately 3.2 micrograms/ml and the T 1/2 beta was 1.4 hours. From the pre

Atypical Presentation of Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Infection in a Dengue-Positive Patient: A Case Report with Virulence Genes Analysis.

Concurrent bacteraemia in patients with dengue fever is rarely reported. We report a case of a patient who initially presented with symptoms typical of dengue fever but later succumbed to septic shock caused by hypervirulent methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). A 50-year-old female patient with hypertension and diabetes mellitus presented with typical symptoms of dengue fever. Upon investigation, the patient reported having prolonged fever for four days prior to hospitalization. Within 24 hours post-admission, the patient developed pneumonia and refractory shock, and ultimatel

Plasmid-mediated resistance to thrombin-induced platelet microbicidal protein in staphylococci: role of the qacA locus.

Thrombin-induced platelet microbicidal protein 1 (tPMP-1) is a small, cationic peptide released from rabbit platelets following thrombin stimulation. In vitro resistance to this peptide among strains of Staphylococcus aureus correlates with the survival advantage of such strains at sites of endothelial damage in humans as well as in experimental endovascular infections. The mechanisms involved in the phenotypic resistance of S. aureus to tPMP-1 are not fully delineated. The plasmid-encoded staphylococcal gene qacA mediates multidrug resistance to multiple organic cations via a proton motive fo

Overexpression of the T-cell receptor V beta 3 in transgenic mice increases mortality during infection by enterotoxin A-producing Staphylococcus aureus.

We have previously demonstrated that staphylococcal enterotoxins contribute to arthritis and mortality during staphylococcal infection. To further explore the mechanism by which bacterial superantigens contribute to the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus septicemia, T-cell receptor V beta 3 transgenic (TGV beta 3) mice and nontransgenic (non-TG) littermates were inoculated intravenously with S. aureus AB-1, which produces large amounts of staphylococcal enterotoxin A, which specifically reacts with T-cell receptor V beta 3. Within 9 days after inoculation, 85% of the TGV beta mice died, com

Diversity in Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins.

The molecular mechanism of Staphylococcus aureus phathogenicity is complex and involves several toxins, including the famous staphylococcal … he clinical situation. It is proposed that the production of SEs plays a role not only in classical staphylococcal infections but also in noninfectious diseases. This review will focus on recent findings related to staphylococcal superantigens and their impact on human diseases.

A case of acute cholecystitis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in an immunocompromised patient.

Although infections with Staphylococcus aureus can implicate multiple organ systems, involvement of the biliary tract is rare. A case of acute cholecystitis and bacteremia with methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) in a patient with HIV infection is presented. The MRSA isolate was found to be a community-associated strain. The present case highlights the invasive nature of staphylococcal infections and the emerging importance of community-associated MRSA strains.

Common skin conditions in humans and animals.

A variety of fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections may affect the skin of both humans and animals. Streptococcal and staphylococcal infections may be transmitted from animals to man. Although lice are host-specific, fleas may leave the preferred animal host and cause local allergic reactions when they bite humans. Ticks and mites commonly infest both humans and animals. A canine variety of Sarcoptes may occasionally cause human scabies.

Role of coagulase in a murine model of hematogenous pulmonary infection induced by intravenous injection of Staphylococcus aureus enmeshed in agar beads.

We describe a novel mouse model of acute staphylococcal pneumonia induced by intravenous injection of Staphylococcus aureus enmeshed in agar beads. For comparison, we also used various strains of bacteria, including three strains of S. aureus, two strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis, one strain of Streptococcus pyogenes, three strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and one strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae. All except two strains of S. aureus were cleared rapidly from the lungs. When S. aureus NUMR1 enmeshed in agar beads was injected intravenously, the organisms concentrated and remained in the l

Interaction of staphylococci with bone.

Staphylococci, in particular Staphylococcus aureus, are the predominant cause of bone infections worldwide. These infections are painful, debilitating and with the rise in antibiotic-resistant forms, increasingly difficult to treat. The growth in the number of prosthetic joint replacement procedures also provides new opportunities for these infections to take hold. Comprehending the mechanisms by which staphylococci interact with and damage bone is critical to the development of new approaches to meet this challenge. This review summarises current understanding of the mechanisms by which staph

Persistent bacteremia due to coagulase-negative staphylococci in low birth weight neonates.

During a 6-month period in 1987, 13 low birth weight neonates without indwelling central intravascular catheters had persistent (positive blood cultures for greater than or equal to 6 days) coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia despite adequate antibiotic therapy. Daily blood cultures remained persistently positive for a mean of 13 days (range 6 to 25 days). This group of infants was compared with other low birth weight infants with similar birth weights and nonpersistent coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia, defined as two or more positive blood cultures accompanied by supporti

Septic Arthritis and Prosthetic Joint Infections in Older Adults.

Older adults are at increased risk for septic arthritis and prosthetic joint infections (PJI), owing at least in part to comorbid conditions and frailty. An increasing number of older adults undergo total joint arthroplasty to improve their quality of life. Infections in older adults differ from younger populations by the causative organisms, a great proportion of which are Staphylococcal infections. Targeting important modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors may prevent or reduce the burden of joint infections in older adults. This review summarizes the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical …

Fifty-five-year-old man with chronic yeast infections.

As immunologists, we are frequently asked to evaluate patients with recurrent infections. These infections can provide us with clues regarding what pathways might be aberrant in a given patient, e.g., specific pyogenic bacteria with Toll-like receptor problems, atypical mycobacteria with interferon gamma receptor autoantibodies, and Candida/staphylococcal infections with cellular immune abnormalities. We present a 55-year-old man who presented to our immunology clinic with onychodystrophy of the toenails and fingernails and recurrent oral-esophageal candidiasis. The differential diagnosis for …

Staphylococcus aureus and Hyper-IgE Syndrome.

Hyper-immunoglobulin E syndrome (HIES) is a primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by recurrent Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections, eczema, skeletal abnormalities and high titers of serum immunoglobulin E. Although the genetic basis of HIES was not known for almost a half century, HIES most frequently exhibits autosomal dominant trait that is transmitted with variable expressivity. Careful genetic studies in recent years identified dominant-negative mutations in human signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) gene as the cause of sporadic and dominant forms o

Mycotic aneurysm of common carotid artery induced by Staphylococcus aureus infection after cervical reoperation.

The objective of this study was to define a novel type of mycotic aneurysm of the carotid artery arising after cervical reoperation. We retrospectively analyzed all staphylococcal mycotic aneurysms of the common carotid artery. These aneurysms had developed after reoperative thyroid or parathyroid surgery, including resection of the central lymph node compartment and cervical reexploration. Mycotic aneurysms were found in three patients, with an incidence of 0.77% (2/261) and 0.62% (1/161) for thyroid and parathyroid reoperations, respectively. Postoperatively, a lymphatic fistula and cervical

Serum anti-Staphylococcus pseudintermedius IgE and IgG antibodies in dogs with atopic dermatitis and nonatopic dogs.

BACKGROUND: Dogs and humans with atopic dermatitis (AD) are predisposed to colonization and recurrent infection with Staphylococcus spp. Studies in humans suggest that staphylococcus-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) plays a key role in disease pathogenesis. Few such studies have been undertaken in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare levels of staphylococcus-specific IgE and immunoglobulin G (IgG) in dogs with AD, nonatopic dogs with staphylococcal pyoderma, and nonatopic and noninfected control dogs.
