A 70-year-old woman was admitted to the intensive care unit with refractory nonconvulsive status epilepticus. Extensive evaluation including neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid examination was unrevealing. Brain biopsy revealed spongiosis, and prion disease was confirmed by immunostaining, providing the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The characteristic features of Kluver-Bucy syndrome include hypersexuality, hyperorality, placidity, hypermetamorphosis, visual agnosia, changes in dietary habits, and memory impairment. Human cases have been reported with herpes simplex encephalitis, head injury, Pick's disease, transtentorial herniation, adrenoleukodystrophy, and Reye's syndrome, all involving bilateral temporal lobe pathology. We present the case of a patient with no evidence of a structural lesion in the temporal lobes and behavioral changes consistent with Kluver-Bucy syndrome following complex partial status epilepticus.

The misuse of benzodiazepines (BNZ)s may result in serious side effects. Three cases of convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) following abrupt discontinuation of long-term use of 25 mg of lorazepam in one patient and more than 20 mg of flunitrazepam in two patients are presented; they were non-epileptics and free of other high-risk factors for seizures. A favorable outcome for all three cases was noted. They remain free of seizures without antiepileptic treatment. Nevertheless, because of the extensive use of benzodiazepines, such rare high-risk side effects must be emphasized.

The convulsions could not be terminated by emergency medical services, resulting in aspiration of gastric contents. Assuming eclampsia, an emergency caesarean section was performed immediately in a central hospital. Postoperatively, a pathological pattern of tendon reflexes was noticed. Four prolonged episodes of partial complex status epilepticus were observed in a teenaged girl. During each there was an "ictal" phase, in which her mental state frequently fluctuated between mildly clouded consciousness and almost total unresponsiveness; once, she was also blind during this phase of impaired consciousness.
