The intent of the Operational K9 (OpK9) ongoing series is to provide the Special Operations Medical Association community with clinical concepts and scientific information on preventive and prehospital emergency care relevant to the OpK9. Often the only medical support immediately available for an injured or ill OpK9 in the field is their handler or the human Special Operations Combat Medic or civilian tactical medic attached to the team (e.g., Pararescueman, 18D, SWAT medic). The information is applicable to personnel operating within the US Special Operations Command as well as civilian Tact

Follow-up evaluation (mean, 13.7 months) was obtained in 30 dogs with gastric dilatation-volvulus that were surgically treated with circumcostal gastropexy. Evaluation was performed by questionnaire (29 dogs), radiographic contrast studies (23 dogs), and necropsy (6 dogs). The gastropexy was thought to be intact in all 23 dogs examined radiographically. Necropsy of 6 dogs dying from causes unrelated to gastric dilatation-volvulus (mean of 12.7 months after surgery) revealed an intact gastropexy site in each dog. Only 1 (3.3%) dog had clinical recurrence of gastric dilatation after surgery. Fiv

Morbid obesity is an epidemic and complex disease which imposes a multidisciplinary approach. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy has become a frequent procedure given its efficacy and safety compared to other surgical options. However, it isn't free from complications. Lax gastric fixation or incorrect positioning of the stomach during surgery can result in early gastric outlet obstruction caused by a volvulus-like mechanism by rotation of the stomach around its anatomic axes. This report refers to two cases of post sleeve gastric torsion resulting in persisting vomiting after initiating oral int

OBJECTIVE: To report the outcomes and complications associated with prophylactic incisional gastropexy performed in dog breeds at risk for GDV.
RESULTS: Seven hundred and sixty-six dogs underwent prophylactic incisional gastropexy of which 61 were electively performed at the time of castration or spay and 705 were adjunctively performed at the time of emergency abdominal surgery. All dogs had short-term follow-up, and 446 dogs (58.2%) had additional follow-up with a median long-term follow-up time of 876 days (range 58-4450). Only 3 dogs (0.4%) had a direct complication associated with the ga

OBJECTIVE: To compare complications between a modified incisional gastropexy (MIG) technique and standard incisional gastropexy (SIG).
ANIMALS: 347 client-owned dogs.
PROCEDURES: Dogs that had undergone SIG or MIG from March 2005 through April 2019 were identified through a medical record search of the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center. The MIG technique is identical to SIG except 2 additional simple interrupted sutures are added, 1 cranial and 1 caudal to the continuous suture line, going full thickness into the stomach to ensure engagement of submucosa. Medical record informa

Upside down stomach (UDS) is a rare type of hiatal hernia. It is categorized by herniation of either the entire stomach or most of the gastric portion of the stomach into the posterior mediastinum. Acute UDS usually presents with abdominal and thoracic symptoms immediately after the stomach rotates, while chronic UDS often has either mild or no symptoms with the entire stomach rotated in the mediastinum. The first case was a 70-year-old female who was admitted with complaints of sudden vomiting and epigastric pain after eating. Computed tomography (CT) revealed UDS. Almost the entire stomach w

INTRODUCTION: Wandering spleen is a rare condition for which splenopexy is indicated to prevent splenic torsion. We present a novel laparoscopic splenopexy technique for wandering spleen based on creation of a three-incision retroperitoneal pouch.
MATERIALS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: A 12-year-old male patient with abdominal distention and vomiting was transferred to our institution. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a swollen wandering spleen with associated gastric volvulus, and the patient underwent laparoscopic surgery. A 5-mm camera port was inserted through an umbilical incision with two addit

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a devastating disease that most commonly affects large and giant-breed dogs. Though a number of risk factors have been associated with the development of GDV, the etiology of GDV remains unclear. Abnormal gastric motility patterns and delayed gastric emptying have been previously described in dogs following GDV. Work evaluating the effects of gastropexy procedures and changes to gastric motility after experimental GDV has not found the same changes as those found in dogs with naturally occurring GDV. Although the role of abnormal gastric motility in dogs wi

Neonatal paraesophageal hernia with intrathoracic gastric volvulus is very rare in the newborn period. We report a case of a 2-day-old term neonate who presented with an antenatal diagnosis of paraesophageal hernia. We discuss the diagnosis and management with classical radiological features including an antenatal diagnosis of this extremely rare surgical cause of neonatal nonbilious emesis.

A new technique for fixation of a mobile spleen is described. It offers the advantages of a minimally risky procedure that very effectively keeps a mobile spleen in its bed without foreign materials and is feasible even when the gastrosplenic ligament is absent and the splenic vessels are uncovered. Our "button and hole" sutureless splenopexy was performed in six patients from 1979 to 1995. Three had a gastric volvulus (GV) and an extremely mobile spleen; one of these also had a diaphragmatic eventration. Another three had torsion of the spleen; in one it occurred 9 months after repair of a di

The authors reported two cases of gastric volvulus in female and male babies respectively 5 and 3 months old. Patients presented functional symptoms as vomiting, regurgitation. Baryum meal X ray allows to make diagnosis in meso-axial and organoxial varieties. They showed the interest to evocate this diagnosis related to an infant vomiting's diagnosis and discussed about therapeutic modality.

A case report of laparoscopic treatment of gastric volvulus in an 85-year-old man is presented. The patient did not have intraoperative or postoperative complications, tolerated a diet in 48 hours, and was discharged home 4 days after surgery. A gastric volvulus can be safely treated using laparoscopic techniques.

In this trial, the effect of supplementary administration of the opioid antagonist Naloxone was tested, in comparison to infusion of Ringer's-solution only, in the treatment of hypovolemic shock in cows suffering from right-sided abomasal displacement. Twenty cows were selected by several criteria (pulse rate greater than 95/min; plasma chloride content less than 90 mmol/l; body temperature less than 39.5 degrees C) and alternatively assigned to the Naloxone group and the control group. All animals were treated surgically by the usual clinical method. After opening the abdominal cavity paralum

Gastric volvulus is a rare acute abdominal condition, especially in the pediatric field. We reported 2 cases of gastric volvulus presenting with acute abdominal pain, abdominal distension and vomiting. Both were found to be mesentero-axial type gastric volvulus on operation; one was associated with gastrosplenic and gastrocolic ligment laxacity, the other with left side diaphragmatic hernia. Both of them recovered uneventfully with no evidence of recurrence on follow up.

Hernia through the foramen of Morgagni is uncommon in adults. Chronic gastric volvulus within the foramen of Morgagni is very rare. In this report, we describe a patient who presented with symptoms of gastric outlet obstruction due to chronic intermittent gastric volvulus in the foramen of Morgagni.
