Immunohistochemical localization of type IV collagen and laminin (alpha1) in denture stomatitis.

Chronic clinical irritation of the palatal mucosa by dentures involves a series of histological changes in epithelial and connective tissues, inflammatory cells and the vasculature. No single change is pathognomic of this inflammatory process. The rupture of basement membrane associated with the development of denture stomatitis often marks an important stage. This study investigated modifications in basement membrane organisation, especially the distribution of type IV collagen and a specific laminin chain (alpha1), during denture stomatitis. Biopsies of palatal mucosa were obtained from 12 p…

Detection of Helicobacter pylori DNA in recurrent aphthous stomatitis tissue by PCR.

Helicobacter pylori is recognised as being an aetiological agent of chronic active gastritis and peptic ulcer disease and has been associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. The natural reservoir for H. pylori is unknown, although the oral cavity has been the focus of much attention in this respect. Given the histological similarities between gastric and oral ulceration, it seemed prudent to investigate a possible association between H. pylori and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). In this study, the potential involvement of H. pylori in the aetiology of RAS was investigated using …

Oral recurrent aphthous ulcers/stomatitis: prevalence in Malaysia and an epidemiological update.

One of the objectives of this short communication was to add to the literature on the prevalence of oral recurrent aphthous stomatitis (ORAS). This research is based on a total of 11,697 randomly selected Malaysian subjects with an age range of 25-115 years and a mean age of 44.5 +/- 13.9 years who were examined for oral mucosal lesions (ORAS). The prevalence of ORAS detected during the oral examination (average point prevalence) was found to be 0.5% (64 subjects). ORAS formed 5.7% of all lesions detected during the survey. The average point prevalence of ORAS was highest in the indigenous peo…

Haematological abnormalities in oral lichen planus, candidiasis, leukoplakia and non-specific stomatitis.

A series of 322 patients presenting with non-ulcerative conditions of the oral mucosa was examined for haematological abnormalities. The series was divided into 5 major groups--lichen planus (103 patients), candidiasis (50), leukoplakia (30), stomatitis or glossitis (66), and a miscellaneous group (73). The prevalence of anaemia, and deficiences in iron, folate and vitamin B12 in each group were compared with that found in 100 controls. The prevalence of anaemia in the series as a whole was not significantly increased, but the prevalences of sideropenia (14.0%), folate deficiency (4.7%) and vi…

Neuroblastoma cell fusion by a temperature-sensitive mutant of vesicular stomatitis virus.

A temperature sensitive mutant of vesicular stomatitis virus which does not mature properly when grown at 39 degrees C promoted extensive fusion of murine neuroblastoma cells at this nonpermissive temperature. Polykaryocytes apparently formed as a result of fusion from within the cells that requires low doses of infectious virions for its promotion and is dependent on viral protein synthesis. Although 90% of infected N-18 neuroblastoma cells were fused by 15 h after infection, larger polykaryocytes continued to form, leading to an average of 28 nuclei per polykaryocyte as a result of polykaryo…

Replication of vesicular stomatitis virus facilitated by Shope fibroma virus in vivo.

Previous studies show that Shope fibroma virus facilitates replication of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) in some rabbit cells grown in vitro. In the present investigation, the possibility that these two viruses can also interact in vivo was determined. Rabbits inoculated intradermally with both viruses together, or each separately, were examined for the formation of lesions or tumors and for the production of infectious virus. The presence of VSV interfered with tumorigenesis by Shope fibroma virus. In tumors already formed, production of infectious VSV was greater than in normal skin. Hence…

Allergic contact dermatitis and stomatitis caused by a cinnamic aldehyde-flavored toothpaste.

A patient had acute stomatitis and dermatitis due to a popular toothpaste containing cinnamon oil flavor. Cinnamon cassia oil is known as a topical sensitizer and was demonstrated to be the offending allergen. Cinnamic aldehyde and related chemicals are used widely, so that patients having cinnamon allergy may be exposed to many sources. There is difficulty in diagnosing allergic contact stomatitis.

Native elution immunoaffinity chromatography for the efficient purification of vesicular stomatitis virus.

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is a promising platform for oncolytic virotherapy and vaccine development. However, its purification remains challenging due to the sensitivity of enveloped viruses to conventional downstream processing conditions. In this study, we investigated the transferability of our previously developed native elution immunoaffinity chromatography (IAC) concept to efficient VSV purification and systematically evaluated the key factors governing its performance while preserving virus integrity and infectivity. Polyclonal anti-VSV IgG antibodies of guinea pig and human orig…

Limited G-dependent residual infectivity of G gene-deleted vesicular stomatitis virus.

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) -ΔG vector particles are widely applied in vaccine development, gene delivery, and immunotherapy studies due to their high transduction efficiency and replication-defective design. However, G-pseudotyped VSV-ΔG preparations may exhibit residual multicycle infectivity associated with VSV-G-dependent entry. Therefore, in this study, we generated VSV-ΔG particles and corresponding M51R and ΔM51 derivatives to examine the relationship between G-dependent residual infectivity and post-entry innate immune regulation. Serial passage experiments were performed with rem…

Prophylaxis, clinical management, and monitoring of datopotamab deruxtecan-associated oral mucositis/stomatitis.

Oral mucositis/stomatitis (hereafter stomatitis) is a common dose-limiting toxicity seen with various classes of cancer treatment. Symptoms associated with stomatitis, primarily oral pain, may impact patient quality of life and may lead to dose delay and reduction or treatment discontinuation. Datopotamab deruxtecan (Dato-DXd) is a novel trophoblast cell surface antigen 2-directed antibody-drug conjugate undergoing clinical investigation in multiple solid tumor types. Stomatitis is among the most reported adverse events associated with Dato-DXd, with most cases being grades 1-2. This article r…

The relationship between smoking and recurrent aphthous stomatitis: A Mendelian randomization study.

INTRODUCTION: Existing research suggests an association between smoking and the incidence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS); however, the causal relationship remains ambiguous. We employed Mendelian randomization (MR) to clarify the potential causal association between smoking and the risk of developing RAS. METHODS: We utilized genome-wide association study (GWAS) sequencing data related to smoking from the Finnish database as instrumental variables (IVs) and GWAS data for RAS from the UK Biobank (UKB) as the outcome to perform a two-sample MR analysis. The selection of IVs was rigorous…

Association between tobacco use and recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to assess whether tobacco use is a risk factor for recurrent aphthous stomatitis. INTRODUCTION: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a common oral condition that presents as oral ulcers. Tobacco use is generally considered a risk factor for several types of oral lesions; however, literature is divided on the effect of tobacco use on recurrent aphthous stomatitis. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Primary studies reporting the association of tobacco use with recurrent aphthous stomatitis will be considered. There will be no restrictions on participants' age, gender,…

Novel Serum Markers that Distinguish Behcet's Disease from Idiopathic Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Behcet's disease (BD) is a rare and recurrent autoinflammatory disorder characterized by systemic vasculitis, frequently manifested as recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). We aim to identify specific serum proteins to discriminate between BD and idiopathicRAS. METHOD: Peripheral blood was collected from 12 BD patients, 12 idiopathic RAS patients, and 21 healthy volunteers. The serum samples underwent Tandem Mass Tag-based mass spectrometry analysis. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified for KEGG pathway enrichment, Gene Ontology (GO), and protein-protein interac…
