Appraisals of Social Trauma and Their Role in the Development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder.

Cognitive theories of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) feature appraisal of trauma as a critical factor in the development and maintenance of the disorder. Here we explored appraisals of social trauma (severe rejection or humiliation). Participants were outpatients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and clinically significant PTSD symptoms (PTSS) after social trauma (n = 15); two clinical control groups of either SAD (n = 32) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; n = 13); and a control group with no diagnoses (n = 38). Measures included a clinical interview to assess social trauma and re

Evidence of altered metabolism of cellular membranes in bipolar disorder comorbid with post-traumatic stress disorder.

In proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H MRS) studies, aberrant levels of choline-containing compounds that include glycerophosphocholine plus phosphocholine (GPC+PC), can signify alterations in the metabolism of cellular membrane phospholipids (MPLs) from a healthy baseline. In a recent ¹H MRS study, we reported increased GPC+PC in cortical and subcortical areas of adult patients with bipolar disorder I (BP-I). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can worsen the severity of BP-I, but it is unclear whether the effect of a PTSD comorbidity in BP-I is associated with altered MPL metabolism

The comorbidity between autism spectrum disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder is mediated by brooding rumination.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication difficulties and restricted repetitive behaviors. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are often diagnosed with other psychiatric conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and depression. However, research on post-traumatic stress disorder among individuals with autism spectrum disorder is scarce. Nonetheless, studies have shown that those with autism spectrum disorder may face an increased risk of exposure to traumatic events. Separate lines of research in autis

Stimulating research on childhood adversities, borderline personality disorder, and complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

Traumatic events of a long-lasting invasive, primarily interpersonal nature (e.g., childhood abuse, intimate partner violence) can have wide-ranging consequences across various life domains. This involves an increased risk of developing mental disorders, such as (complex) post-traumatic stress (PTSD, CPTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Both within and outside of these diagnostic boundaries, complex trauma has been associated with emotional dysregulation, dissociation, distrust, interpersonal problems, and maladaptive coping behaviours, such as self-harm and suicidal behaviour. Cannabis use disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder: The prevalence of comorbidity in veterans of recent conflicts.

AIMS: Veterans have high rates of cannabis use, and rates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) are rising among this population. These rising rates are particularly true for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is common among veterans of recent conflicts, Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND). Although prior work has documented links between PTSD and cannabis use, a better understanding of the intersection among CUD, PTSD, and other disorders in real-world clinical practice can inform prevention and treatment efforts. Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in post-traumatic stress disorder and cocaine use disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often comorbid with cocaine use disorder (CUD), but little is known about hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function in PTSD + CUD. Here we review the clinical and pre-clinical literature of PTSD and CUD with the goal of generating hypotheses about HPA axis activity in comorbid PTSD + CUD. Low glucocorticoid (CORT) levels immediately after trauma exposure are associated with PTSD. CORT administered within 12 h of trauma exposure reduces later PTSD symptoms. Weeks-years after trauma, meta-analyses find lower CORT levels in patients with PTSD rela

The phenomenology of auditory verbal hallucinations in emotionally unstable personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the phenomenology of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) in a clinical sample of young people who have a 'non-psychotic' diagnosis. METHODS: Ten participants aged 17-31 years with presentation of emotionally unstable personality disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder and frequent AVHs were recruited and participated in a qualitative study exploring their subjective experience of hearing voices. Photo-elicitation and ethnographic diaries were used to stimulate discussion in an otherwise unstructured walking interview. RESULTS: 'Non-psychotic' voices comprised audit

Is the Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP) Effective for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder? A Meta-Analysis.

Following collective traumas, the need for mental health services to become accessible to a large number of people in a short time not only requires the effectiveness of psychological interventions but also their accessibility. Collective experiences such as natural disasters, wars, forced migration, epidemics and incidents of social violence pose a significant risk to public mental health because they affect multiple individuals simultaneously. Therefore, along with individual therapy, group therapy is becoming increasingly important in making mental health services accessible to more people

Verbal Memory in Traumatic Brain Injury: Associations With Age, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Antidepressant Use.

OBJECTIVE: Episodic memory is one of the cognitive domains most affected after a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and memory decline is a hallmark of both normal aging and Alzheimer disease (AD). Although TBI is reported to accelerate age-related cognitive decline and brain atrophy, it is unclear how this trajectory is shaped by frequent co-occurring factors such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychotropic medication use. This study tested whether age-related decline in delayed verbal memory is more pronounced among adults with a history of TBI than those without TBI. Analyses also

Efficacy of imagery rehearsal therapy in the treatment of traumatic nightmares in youth with complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic nightmares are a core feature in adolescents with complex PTSD (CPTSD) exposed to early and repeated trauma, maintaining hyperactivity and dysregulation. Despite their prevalence and functional impact, targeted treatments for youth remain scarce. Imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) is a brief cognitive-behavioral intervention effective in adults, but evidence in adolescents with CPTSD is limited. METHODS: This study assessed the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of four sessions of IRT adapted for young participants (14-25 years) with CPTSD. Thirty-nine participants

Post-traumatic stress disorder in autistic and non-autistic adults: The impact of appraisals on reactions to traumatic events.

Research suggests autistic people experience greater post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity than non-autistic people following traumatic events. Post-trauma appraisals are fundamental in cognitive models of post-traumatic stress disorder, but have not been explored in autistic people. We aimed to explore whether we could replicate effects of heightened trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity in autistic adults, and examine how post-traumatic appraisals affect the association between autism and post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity. Traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder are not associated with Alzheimer's disease pathology measured with biomarkers.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies report an association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease (AD). We examined the association between TBI/PTSD and biomarker-defined AD. METHODS: We identified 289 non-demented veterans with TBI and/or PTSD and controls who underwent clinical evaluation, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collection, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau positron emission tomography, and apolipoprotein E testing. Participants were followed for up to 5.2 years. RESULTS: Expo

Post-traumatic stress disorder and self-reported outcomes after traumatic brain injury in victims of assault.

INTRODUCTION: Assault is the third most common cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI), after falls and road traffic collisions. TBI can lead to multiple long-term physical, cognitive and emotional sequelae, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Intentional violence may further compound the psychological trauma of the event, in a way that conventional outcome measures, like the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), fail to capture. This study aims to examine the influence of assault on self-reported outcomes, including quality of life and symptoms of PTSD. METHODS: Questionnaire were complete

EEG Neurofeedback for Anxiety Disorders and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders: A Blueprint for a Promising Brain-Based Therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review provides an overview of current knowledge and understanding of EEG neurofeedback for anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: The manifestations of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) are associated with dysfunctions of neurophysiological stress axes and brain arousal circuits, which are important dimensions of the research domain criteria (RDoC). Even if the pathophysiology of these disorders is complex, one of its defining signatures is behavioral and physiological over-arousal. Interestingly, arousal-rel

Electrophysiological markers of altered affective information processing in post-traumatic stress disorder.

We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to characterize the cortical and autonomic nervous system activity associated with affective information processing in PTSD. Participants were service members assigned to one of two groups based on whether they met (n = 36) or did not meet (n = 48) the DSM-V criteria for PTSD. MEG recordings were performed while participants viewed and rated for pleasantness images with positive affective valence (set 1) and neutral images (set 2). Higher amplitudes of the early (75 ms-150 ms) neuromagnetic evoked responses to positive vs. neutral images indicated that the

Resource management and post-traumatic stress disorder in peacekeepers: A qualitative exploratory study.

The high variability in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence among peacekeepers facing similar trauma underscores that factors beyond exposure determine outcomes. Based on Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this qualitative study identified the primary risk and protective factors shared by peacekeepers and, as a secondary objective, conducted a preliminary, hypothesis-generating comparison between those with and without probable PTSD. Semi-structured interviews with 32 Portuguese peacekeepers from various missions were transcribed and thematically analyzed using NVivo. The PCL

Post-traumatic stress disorder and cardiometabolic dysfunction: Molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex psychiatric condition affecting approximately 6.1% of the US population and is characterized by intrusive memories, trauma avoidance, emotional dysregulation, and hyperarousal. The disorder is associated with significant neurobiological changes, including structural and functional alterations in key brain regions such as the amygdala, hippocampus, corpus callosum, prefrontal cortex, and premotor cortex. Neurologically, PTSD is marked by heightened amygdala activity, reduced ventromedial prefrontal cortex activation, and significant cognitive i
