Patterns of sun safety behaviors in parents: Associations with physical activity, sedentary behavior, and access to neighborhood physical activity resources.

Exposure to ultraviolet rays is associated with increased risk of sunburn - a biomarker of skin cancer risk - and physical activity can increase exposure. Sun safety behaviors can mitigate the increased risk of skin cancer. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine associations between physical activity behaviors, access to neighborhood physical activity resources, and sunburn across different patterning of sun safety behaviors. Data collected in 2014 from parents in the United States were analyzed (N = 1680; 75% female, primarily between the ages of 35-44 and 45-59, and 67%…

Reporting of skin cancer risks in the house-building industry: alternative approaches to the analysis of categorical data.

BACKGROUND: Increasing incidence of skin cancer is of concern to public health. Working predominantly outside, construction workers are at increased risk of sunburn and certain forms of skin cancer. The objective of this paper was to explore these concerns via use of alternative approaches to categorical data analysis by considering the relationship between the size of house-building companies, use of risk assessments and the system for reporting sunburn. METHODS: The survey population was speculative house-building companies. A self-administered questionnaire was sent to health and safety ad…

Behaviors, Attitudes, and Knowledge Related to Sun Exposure Among Medical Students at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of skin cancer, for which the main risk factor is exposure to ultraviolet radiation, has risen worldwide. Sunburn is one of the simplest ways to assess sun exposure habits. To date, few studies have evaluated sun exposure in university students. OBJECTIVES: To determine behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge related to sun exposure and sun protection measures among medical students at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and to assess their relation to sunburn frequency. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The voluntary participants in this cross-sectional survey were fi…

Mechanisms of Broad-Band UVB Irradiation‒Induced Itch in Mice.

Although sunburn can produce severe uncontrollable itching, the underlying mechanisms of UV irradiation‒induced itch are poorly understood because of a lack of experimental animal models of sunburn itch. In this study, we established a sunburn-related mouse model and found that broad-band UVB irradiation elicited scratching but not wiping behavior in mice. Using a combination of live-cell calcium ion imaging and quantitative RT-PCR on dorsal root ganglion neurons, H&E staining, immunofluorescence staining of skin preparations, and behavioral testing, in combination with genetic and pharmacolog…

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor as an Immediate-Early Activator of Ultraviolet-Induced Skin Injury.

The negative health consequences of acute ultraviolet (UV) exposure are evident, with reports of 30,000 emergency room visits annually to treat the effects of sunburn in the United States alone. The acute effects of sunburn include erythema, edema, severe pain, and chronic overexposure to UV radiation, leading to skin cancer. Whereas the pain associated with the acute effects of sunburn may be relieved by current interventions, existing post-sunburn treatments are not capable of reversing the cumulative and long-term pathological effects of UV exposure, an unmet clinical need. Here we show tha…

UV-B-Induced Erythema in Human Skin: The Circadian Clock Is Ticking.

Acute exposure of skin to UV-B causes DNA damage and sunburn erythema in both mice and humans. Previous studies documented time-of-day-related differences in sunburn responses after UV-B exposure in mice. Because humans are diurnal and mice are nocturnal, the circadian rhythm in human skin was hypothesized to be in opposite phase to the rhythm in mice. A study by Nikkola et al. demonstrates that humans are more prone to sunburn erythema after evening exposure to solar UV-B radiation as compared with morning exposure.

Relief of uremic pruritus with ultraviolet phototherapy.

We studied the effect of ultraviolet-light phototherapy on severe persistent pruritus in 18 adult patients on hemodialysis. Patients were randomly assigned to one of two light sources. The experimental group received conventional sunburn-spectrum light in gradually increasing doses. The control group received time-matched exposures to long-wave ultraviolet light. All patients received eight exposures to the entire skin surface over a four-week treatment period. Nine of 10 patients in the sunburn-spectrum group reported marked decrease in pruritus as opposed to two of eight in the placebo group…

Skin type, minimal erythema dose (MED), and sunlight acclimatization.

Minimal erythema doses (MEDs) of individuals with different skin types were compared. Each skin type was shown to be statistically different from each other skin type in terms of sunburn sensitivity. Individuals of each skin type who primarily stayed indoors were compared with those who attempted to be outdoors. In the winter there was no difference between the sunburn sensitivity (MEDs) of these groups. During the summer, those who went outdoors were more resistant to sunburn than those who stayed indoors. In effect, acclimatization makes an individual respond to sunlight like a less sensitiv…

Ultraviolet recall phenomenon following the use of ampicillin.

Ultraviolet recall or sunburn reactivation is an uncommon phenomenon that has been most frequently reported in patients who suffered sunburns and then subsequently underwent therapy with methotrexate. There are very few cases in which antibiotics are involved. We report a case of ultraviolet recall occurring after ampicillin therapy. Our patient suffered severe vesiculobullous skin reaction in areas that had been sunburned only minimally 2 months previously. The patch test was positive only to ampicillin tested in the skin previously affected.

Ultraviolet-radiation induced skin inflammation: dissecting the role of bioactive lipids.

Acute exposure of human skin to the ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in sunlight results in the sunburn response. This is mediated in part by pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and other bioactive lipids, which are in turn produced via mechanisms including UVR-induction of oxidative stress, cell signalling and gene expression. Sunburn is a self-limiting inflammation offering a convenient and accessible system for the study of human cutaneous lipid metabolism. Recent lipidomic applications have revealed that a wider diversity of eicosanoids may be involved in the sunburn response than previously appreciat…

Acute dorsal skin responses to UVB-irradiation in Wistar-derived hypotrichotic WBN/ILA-Ht rats.

Acute responses of the dorsal skin to UVB-irradiation (10 kJ/m2) were compared between Wistar-derived hypotrichotic WBN/ILA-Ht rats and Wistar rats. In the epidermis of WBN/ILA-Ht rats, intracellular edema of keratinocytes with or without nuclear shrinkage developed at 3 hours after irradiation mainly in the spinous layer. At 12 hours after irradiation, many sunburn cells characterized by eosinophilic cytoplasm and pyknotic nuclei were observed chiefly in the basal layer. Sunburn cells were mainly observed in the spinous and granular layers at 24 hours after irradiation, and they almost disapp…

Drug eruptions presenting at sites of prior radiation damage (sunlight and electron beam).

Two patients are described in whom sunburn and electron beam radiodermatitis, respectively, were critical determinants in localizing the initial presentation of drug eruptions. In the first instance, a severe sunburn of the back and thighs was followed 7 months later by the appearance of a toxic epidermal necrolysis drug reaction to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in the exact sites of the previous bullous sunburn reaction. In the second patient, a radiodermatitis of the left upper arm due to electron beam therapy for metastatic breast cancer was followed 7 weeks later by a codeine drug reaction…

Regulation of MdANR in Anti-Burning Process of Apple Peel.

Sunburn in apple peel significantly affects fruit appearance and reduces its commercial value. Previous research has shown that apple peel reduces sunburn by increasing the accumulation of proanthocyanidins (PAs) and other protective compounds. However, the precise molecular regulatory mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated MdANR, a key gene involved in PAs biosynthesis. We found that MdANR expression in apple peel is responsive to temperature and light fluctuations, with higher expression levels observed under increased temperature and light exposure. Functio…

Ultraviolet light exposure, pigmentary traits and the development of melanocytic naevi and cutaneous melanoma. A case-control study of the German Central Malignant Melanoma Registry.

The present study firstly aimed at understanding the relationship between sun exposure, pigmentary traits and the history of sunburns. Secondly, the significance of UV-exposure for cutaneous melanoma and for melanocytic naevi was investigated. The case-controlled study comprised 513 patients with primary cutaneous melanoma and 498 controls matched by age and gender. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to study melanoma risk factors. The number of common melanocytic naevi was associated with age, gender, the history of sunburns and UV-exposure during holidays (odds-ratio = 1.9; 9…

Sunscreen use and failures--on site observations on a sun-holiday.

With this observation study we aimed to determine how and when sunscreen was used. 20 sun seekers were observed during a one-week sun holiday in Hurghada, Egypt. The sunscreen application thickness was related to part of body, time outdoors, exposure to ultraviolet radiation and to sunburning. Skin sites with sunscreen were exposed to UVR significantly longer and received significantly higher UVR doses than skin sites without sunscreen. They received an average of 0.62 SED [0.0-9.3 SED] (13% of their MED) before the first sunscreen application of the day. The average sunscreen used was SPF15 a…

Langerhans cells orchestrate apoptosis of DNA-damaged keratinocytes upon high-dose UVB skin exposure.

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of the skin causes mutations that can promote the development of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer. High-dose UVB exposure triggers a vigorous skin reaction characterized by inflammation resulting in acute sunburn. This response includes the formation of sunburn cells and keratinocytes (KC) undergoing programmed cell death (apoptosis) when repair mechanisms of DNA damage are inadequate. The primary objective of this research was to clarify the involvement of Langerhans cells (LC) in the development of acute sunburn following intense UVB skin irradiation. To addr…
