Assessment of Female Genital Surgery Education in Plastic Surgery Training: Report of an Expert Opinion Survey.

BACKGROUND: Patient demand for aesthetic genital surgery has markedly increased. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported 95,010 labiaplasties and 50,086 vaginal rejuvenation procedures in 2015. METHODS: We performed an online anonymous survey to evaluate the teaching of female genital procedures in plastic surgery training programs worldwide. RESULTS: A total of 1033 board certified plastic surgeons answered the survey. Most respondents were from the USA, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. The majority of plastic surgeons performing these procedures were in private practice

Modeling the Lifetime Impact of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Training: Implications for Building Capacity in Global Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Training local surgeons and building local surgical capacity is critical to closing the gap in unmet surgical burden in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings. We propose a conceptual framework to quantify the impact of a single surgeon's training across multiple generations of trainees. METHODS: A literature review was conducted to identify existing models for quantifying the impact of training. A model to estimate the attributable impact of surgical training was devised, based on a surgeon's attributable impact on a trainee and the lifetime number of cases trainees would

Chest Feminization and Masculinization Surgery: Part Two of the Plastic Surgeon's Perspective of Gender-Affirming Surgery.

Transgender individuals commonly feel significant distress and discomfort, termed gender dysphoria, as a result of the discrepancy between their gender assigned at birth and their gender identity. A major source of gender dysphoria stems from distinct anatomical differences between the male and female chest. Gender-affirming mastectomy of transmasculine patients and breast augmentation for chest feminization of transfeminine patients, also referred to as top surgery, are often the first surgical interventions and most commonly pursued physical modifications for the treatment of gender dysphori

Ortho Plastics The Adoption and Evolution of Polyethylene in Orthopedic Surgery.

Total joint arthroplasty relies on the use of biomaterials that are biologically inert and capable of forming wear-resistant articulating surfaces. Polyethylene use in arthroplasty has become ubiquitous since its introduction in the 1960s. Early arthroplasty procedures of the hip utilized poly-tetra-flouroethylene, or "Teflon," due to its low coefficient of friction that was presumed to closely mimic the hyaline cartilage of native joints. Early catastrophic wear of Teflon caused a significant local tissue reaction contributing to osteolysis, aseptic loosening, and clinical failure ultimately

[Scars of the soul--wounds of the body: plastic surgery and psychotherapy].

With the example of two case reports of chronic wounds the connection between somatic and psycho-social factors is shown on the basis of the biopsycho-social model of disease. Both in aetiology as well as in therapy the dilemma of "somatic OR psychic" can thereby be solved. The inclusion of psychotherapeutic interventions in conservative or surgical strategies increases the probability of healing.

[Treatment of complications of plastic surgery on the tendons of finger flexors].

From experience in the treatment of more than 800 patients by various methods of autotendoplasty which had been developed in the clinic earlier, the authors analysed the most characteristic complications of these operations. Separation of the wound edges and partial marginal necroses of the skin occurred in 7-8% of patients, mainly in bilateral damage to the neurovascular bundles of the fingers, ligature fistulas in 6-7%, ruptures in 5%, flexion contractures of the fingers formed in 2% of patients who had been operated on, suppuration of the wounds was practically not encountered. The peculiar

[Plastic surgery of the ligament for chronic lateral instability of the ankle].

Ten patients with chronic lateral instability of the ankle have been treated by operation using a homograft of preserved skin and scar tissue to reinforce the lateral ligament complex. The technique is simple and cheap. We have analysed the functional stability of the ankles after operation by E. M. G. and Cybex studies of the appropriate muscle groups when standing on an unstable platform and during normal gait. The passive tension of the ligaments is of greater value in stabilising the ankle than active contraction of the muscles. The peroneus brevis has an important action in opposing varus

Complications by liquid plastics in ophthalmic surgery. Histopathologic study.

Retrospective morphological studies of ocular tissues after treatment with liquid plastics reveal many complications induced by the material. Cyanoacrylates for punctal occlusion glide into the lacrimal sac and lead to obstructive dacryocystitis and even to reactive xanthogranuloma. The use of this glue in combination with a hard contact lens as 'artificial epithelium' provokes a remarkable stromal and endothelial cell loss of the cornea. Intraocular silicone oil sometimes induces a massive epiretinal macrophage activity with storage of the material or reactive fibrosis when it gets into the s

Evaluating the exoscope as an alternative to the operating microscope in plastic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgery is most commonly used in the anastomosis of vessels, flap harvesting, lymphedema, and nerve reconstruction, among others. During the 1920s the first microscope was invented by Nylen and Holmgren, quickly becoming the gold standard for microsurgery. However, technological advances have come forth in the form of exoscopes. METHODS: A search for full-text articles where using an exoscope was compared with a traditional operating microscope was conducted on the databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. The following terms were used to guide our search: Microsc

The role of primary plastic surgery in the management of open fractures.

A study was undertaken to determine the requirement for primary plastic surgery in the treatment of open fractures. We reviewed 3297 consecutive open fractures in a 22-year period in a defined population. Analysis showed that 12.6% of patients required primary plastic surgery with 5.6% being treated with split skin grafting and 7.2% with a flap. Only 3.5% of open upper limb fractures required primary plastic surgery compared to 27.9% of open lower limb fractures. The fractures that required most primary plastic surgery were those of the femoral diaphysis and all fractures between the proximal

Access to Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Nerve Procedures in Lower Extremity Amputations.

Neuroma complicates lower extremity (LE) amputations causing significant morbidity. This study examines the relationship between access to plastic surgery and the likelihood of receiving a neuroma-preventing nerve procedure with LE amputation in the United States.Using the National Inpatient Sample, 2016 to 2021, ICD-10 codes identified encounters undergoing above- or below-knee LE amputation with or without concurrent nerve procedures (targeted muscle reinnervation and regenerative peripheral nerve interface). Plastic surgery volume was determined using ICD-10-PCS codes. Outcomes included pop

Current Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Plastic Surgery: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves delivering 100% oxygen at pressures greater than 1 atmosphere and is used in several specialties. In plastic surgery, HBOT has been applied to ischemic wounds, compromised flaps, and tissue injury. Despite its growing use, comprehensive evaluations of its indications, complications, and outcomes remain limited. METHODS: A systematic review was performed in February 2025 using PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane. The Preferred Reporting for Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. Abstracts and full texts were revie
