Modified Tail Amputation Technique in a Blue and Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna) With Uropygial Gland Adenocarcinoma.

A 33-year-old male blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) presented with a 5-month history of an ulcerated lesion and feather loss at the tail base. Two 4-mm biopsies obtained by the primary care veterinarian were consistent with uropygial gland adenocarcinoma. The bird was examined at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, University of California, and on physical evaluation, the dorsal and ventral surface of the tail base were devoid of feathers, ulcerated and crusted without an identifiable uropygial gland. Complete blood count, plasma biochemistry panel, whole-body radiographs, and an echoc

Caudal compression of the infraorbital nerve: a novel surgical technique for treatment of idiopathic headshaking and assessment of its efficacy in 24 horses.

UNLABELLED: REASONS FOR DESIGNING AND REPORTING TECHNIQUE: Idiopathic headshaking has remarkable similarities to human neuropathic facial pain syndromes associated with post herpetic and trigeminal neuralgia. These derive from abnormal sensory function within the peripheral or central pathways of the trigeminal nerve (TgN). Limiting input from the TgN can be helpful in controlling the perception of pain. Rhizotomy of the infraorbital branch of the TgN as it emerges from the infraorbital canal has been reported but has a poor efficacy. A novel technique involves compression of the nerve at a mo

Local anaesthetic efficacy provided by lidocaine or lidocaine-tramadol in dogs undergoing maxillary fourth premolar extraction.

Oral nerve blocks are an indispensable technique for pre-emptive pain management in various veterinary procedures, including tooth extractions. Local anaesthetic drugs are considered the safest and the most effective agents to inhibit oral pain. Recently, tramadol was used as an adjuvant to local anaesthetics to increase the duration of analgesia. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of maxillary nerve block induced by lidocaine or lidocaine-tramadol on perioperative pain in dogs undergoing upper fourth premolar extraction. A randomized blinded clinical study was conducted over five

Metastatic extradural melanoma of the lumbar spine in a cat.

A 7-year-old neutered male Domestic shorthair cat, with a 1.5-year history of left eye enucleation secondary to a diffuse iris malignant melanoma, was evaluated for progressive onset of pelvic limb paresis and ataxia with severe thoracolumbar hyperaesthesia and dysorexia. Neurological examination localised a lesion to the T3-L3 spinal cord segments. Magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracolumbar spine showed a well-defined extradural T1-weighted hyperintense non-contrast-enhancing mass, initially suggesting a potential haemorrhagic component. Exploratory surgery revealed a brownish extradural

Myelopeptides: new immunoregulatory peptides.

Bone marrow cells of various animal species and humans produce a group of bioregulatory peptides called myelopeptides (MPs). MPs have been isolated and purified, and their physico-chemical properties have been investigated. MPs have a wide spectrum of functional activities: immunoregulatory, differentiating, and opiate-like. A new immunocorrective drug, Myelopidum, which is used effectively in clinical practice for treating diseases accompanied by immunodeficiency, has been created on the basis of MPs. Administration of Myelopidum after surgery prevents 50% to 70% of postsurgical complications

Randomized clinical trial comparing outcomes after fentanyl or ketamine-dexmedetomidine analgesia in thoracolumbar spinal surgery in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Opioids are widely used for perioperative pain control in dogs undergoing spinal surgery, but alternatives may be required because data suggest that opioids exacerbate inflammation in the injured spinal cord and veterinary access to opioids may become more restricted in the future. OBJECTIVES: To compare recovery of ambulation and other functions between spinal cord-injured dogs receiving peri-operative fentanyl and those receiving a ketamine-dexmedetomidine combination. ANIMALS: A total of 102 client-owned dogs undergoing decompressive surgery for thoracolumbar intervertebral di

Efficacy of transdermal ketoprofen on surgical inflammation in dogs.

Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation in dogs. Despite having effective analgesic efficacy, prolonged oral administration has been associated with adverse effects. Transdermal delivery of ketoprofen has reduced the incidence of adverse effects in humans and could potentially be used in veterinary clinical medicine. A transdermal (TD) ketoprofen formulation was recently developed for use in dogs and this study aimed to determine the pharmacodynamic activity of this formulation using surgical castration as an acute inflammatory model. Incidence of Intra-abdominal Adhesions Following Intraperitoneal Injection of Hemostatic Products in Rabbits.

INTRODUCTION: Definitive management of non-compressible intra-abdominal hemorrhage (NCIAH) currently requires a surgeon and operating room capable of performing damage control surgery. In a wartime scenario or a geographically remote environment, these may not be readily available. In this study, we sought to test the safety of 2 emerging injectable hemostatic agents (CounterFlow and Fast Onset Abdominal Management, or FOAM, poloxamer component) versus normal saline control over a prolonged monitoring duration following administration by a non-surgical provider.
