Characterization of Corneal Indentation Hysteresis.

Corneal indentation is adapted for the design and development of a characterization method for corneal hysteresis behavior - Corneal Indentation Hysteresis (CIH). Fourteen porcine eyes were tested using the corneal indentation method. The CIH measured in enucleated porcine eyes showed indentation rate and intraocular pressure (IOP) dependences. The CIH increased with indentation rate at lower IOP (<; 25 mmHg) and decreased with indentation rate at higher IOP (> 25 mmHg). The CIH was linear proportional to the IOP within an individual eye. The CIH was positively correlated with the IOP, corneal

Quantifying the spatial and temporal variation in dose from external exposure to radiation: a new tool for use on free-ranging wildlife.

Inadequate dosimetry is often the fundamental problem in much of the controversial research dealing with radiation effects on free-ranging wildlife. Such research is difficult because of the need to measure dose from several potential pathways of exposure (i.e., internal contamination, external irradiation, and inhalation). Difficulties in quantifying external exposures can contribute significantly to the uncertainties of dose-effect relationships. Quantifying an animal's external exposure due to spatial-temporal use of habitats that can vary by orders of magnitude in radiation levels is parti

Post-burning fragmentation of calcined bone: implications for remains recovery from fatal fire scenes.

This research assesses how short term delays in time-until-recovery can affect the quality and quantity of burnt bone recovered from a fatal fire scene. Knowledge of trends in post-burning remains fragmentation will enable investigators to prioritise remains recovery and implement recovery protocols appropriately. By comparing calcined bone fragments recovered 0, 24, 56 and 168 h (1 week) after experimental burns, this research describes remains fragmentation over time. Sus scrofa (domestic pig) limbs were burnt in a series of wood fuelled fires with calcined remains recovered at the specified…

Comparison of a novel radially dilating balloon ureteral access sheath to a conventional sheath in the porcine model.

PURPOSE: Traditional ureteral access sheaths rely on tapered dilators and the Dotter principle of axial force to gain access into the ureter. We compared the performance of a novel balloon expandable ureteral access sheath using radial dilatation with that of a conventional ureteral access sheath. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten farm pigs underwent randomized placement of the novel sheath in 1 ureter and a conventional ureteral access sheath in the contralateral ureter followed by videotaped ureteroscopy. Acute study end points included maximum and mean force of sheath insertion and removal, salin

Farmers' motivational profiles for providing outdoor access to pigs.

Although in the minority, outdoor pig farming systems are experiencing a resurgence of interest in several countries such as France, systems that could contribute to the transition towards sustainable agriculture. Understanding farmers' motivations for adopting sustainable practices is crucial for transforming agricultural systems. Hence, this study aimed at identifying the motivational profiles of French farmers who chose to raise pigs on farms offering outdoor access to their animals. A total of 20 semi-structured interviews, lasting 1.25-2.25 h, were conducted among French farmers who raise

In touch with the dead: Disease implications of conspecific carcass visitation and contact.

Indirect transmission of diseases in wildlife is complex and poorly understood despite its significance in disease dynamics and predictive modeling. Carcasses of infected hosts can persist on the landscape as infectious sources, as shown in African swine fever (ASF), leading to outbreak persistence and spread. Yet little work has quantified the rate at which carcasses are contacted by conspecifics or the local ecological factors that may impact contact. We used wild pigs (Sus scrofa) to evaluate the probability of conspecific carcass visitation and contact, and to assess how local variables in…

Electromotive Drug Administration in the Porcine Ureter: First In Vivo Application for Ureteral Dilation.

OBJECTIVE: Retrograde intrarenal surgery is limited by the narrow caliber of the human ureter, resulting in both reluctance to deploy larger ureteral access sheaths and, at times, failed primary ureteral access, requiring placement of a ureteral stent and a delayed second procedure. In this study, we sought to evaluate the application of electromotive drug administration (EMDA) to deliver smooth muscle relaxants to the porcine ureter to facilitate acute ureteral dilation. METHODS: Eighteen juvenile female Yorkshire pigs were randomized into three treatment groups (alfuzosin, aminophylline, or

137Cesium (137Cs) assessment in wild boars from northwestern Italy.

Radionuclide contamination is a serious health issue caused by nuclear experiments and plant accidents, as seen for the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear plants. Italy has been especially interested in northwestern alpine regions, as have several other nations. The aim of this work was to indagate 134Cs and 137Cs contamination in wild boars, which were considered bioindicators sampled in the Chisone/Germanasca Valley and the Pellice Valley districts (Piedmont, Italy) in two hunting seasons (2014 and 2016). In the 2014 season, only the livers of the animals (n = 48) were sampled, whereas in 2016,

Scavenger-induced scattering of wild boar carcasses over large distances and its implications for disease management.

Vertebrate scavengers provide essential ecosystem services such as accelerating carrion decomposition by consuming carcasses, exposing tissues to microbial and invertebrate decomposers, and recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. Some scavengers do not consume carcasses on site but rather scatter their remains in the surroundings, which might have important implications for nutrient transport, forensic investigations and the spread of diseases such as African Swine Fever. However, only a few studies have investigated and measured the scatter distances. Using wild boar (Sus scrofa) carcass…

Morphometric changes on the vulva from proestrus to oestrus of nulliparous and multiparous HYPERPROLIFIC sows.

The aim of this study was to assess whether vulvar morphometric changes occurring in female pigs during proestrus and oestrus could be objective, accurate and predictive indicators of the onset to oestrus and thus performed artificial inseminations at the most appropriate time. For that purpose, pictures of vulvas from 60 hyperprolific females (30 gilts and 30 sows) during proestrus and oestrus were taken once a day. Vulva measurements (area, perimeter, length and width) on these pictures were performed using the image processing ImageJ software. Gilts and sows showed statistical differences (

Validation and optimisation of an automatic blood sampler for preclinical positron emission tomography research in domestic pigs.

In preclinical positron emission tomography animal studies, continuous blood sampling is used to measure the time course of the activity concentration in arterial blood. However, pigs have hypercoagulable blood that tends to clot inside plastic tubes. We tested several tube materials and lengths and the use of three-way connectors. We validated set-ups for automated blood sampling with and without blood recirculation that could run for 90 minutes without problematic clots and without any evidence of emboli formation during necropsy.

First detection of Blastocystis sp. in pigs in Slovakia and in Europe.

Blastocystis sp. is a single-cell microorganism occurring in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and various animals and is distributed worldwide. Blastocystis exhibits extensive genetic diversity of 28 subtypes (STs) based on the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. In this study, the genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of Blastocystis were evaluated using pig faecal samples from two farms in Slovakia. Blastocystis spp. were detected in pigs intended for distribution and consumption. ST 5 subtype was identified in all positive samples and age categories with a prevalence of 12%.
