Seven different suspension systems for below-knee prostheses were tested on 20 adult, unilateral amputees. All subjects walked with a prosthesis. Gait was evaluated with regard to longitudinal and vertical accelerations of the body, forward velocity, axial (piston) movement of amputated limb in the socket, and knee movement. Harmonic analyses of variable waveforms provided the primary method to discriminate performances among the suspensions. The appropriateness of a given suspension system depended on both the length and the shape of the residual limb.

The apparent loss of carbamazepine suspension during administration through polyvinyl chloride nasogastric feeding tubes in vitro was studied. Twelve methods of administering carbamazepine suspension (100 mg/5 mL) were tested; the methods differed with respect to nasogastric tube size, presence and type of diluent, and type of flush solution. Fifty-two epiurethral suprapubic vaginal suspension procedures for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence were reviewed. The long-term results (80.5% success rate) were comparable to those of other urethropexy procedures. Complications included deep vein thrombophlebitis (3.8%), excessive bleeding (5.8%), prolonged (more than seven days) postoperative catheterization (32.7%), or tape rejection (3.8%). A highly successful transvaginal bladder neck suspension for female stress urinary incontinence is described and illustrated. Precise lateral placement of sutures, maximum mobilization of the anterior vaginal wall and bladder neck, and ease of approach are keys to the technique. The procedure can be utilized in any setting with minimal complications and with neither obesity nor multiple previous surgeries as contraindications.

Endoscopic suspension of the vesical neck was used to prevent urinary leakage in 2 female spinal cord patients with reflex neurogenic bladders, chronic urethral catheters and massive urethral dilatation. Factors responsible for the favorable results are discussed.

Twenty-four retropubic urethrovesical suspension operations were performed in a five-year period. Twenty-one of the patients were satisfied with the results, although the objective success of the operation did not always correlate with subjective relief of symptoms.
