Infectious eccrine hidradenitis: sweat glands as the portal of entry for cellulitis.

Neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis (NEH) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis involving the eccrine glands. It is commonly associated with haematological malignancy and administration of chemotherapy. An infective aetiology for NEH is termed infectious eccrine hidradenitis (IEH). Pathogens that have been associated with IEH include Nocardia, Serratia, Enterobacter sp., Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium chelonae We describe a case of IEH in a patient with prolonged use of a compression sleeve for their upper limb lymphoedema. The histopathological findings of NEH and IEH are almost identical.

Forty-year-old man with dyspnoea, haemoptysis and night sweats.

CLINICAL INTRODUCTION: A 40-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of night sweats, haemoptysis, dyspnoea and weight loss. He had never smoked. Physical examination was unremarkable. He was haemodynamically stable. He was anaemic with a haemoglobin of 10 g/L and his D-dimer was elevated at 1.32 µg/mL.A 12 lead ECG showed sinus rhythm with no abnormalities. A chest radiograph (CXR) was performed (figure 1A). Transthoracic echocardiography revealed normal right ventricular size and systolic function with a step-up, distally, in pulmonary arterial (PA) velocity from 0.7 m/s to 3.2 m/s.hear…

Comparison of T2 and T3 sympathectomy for compensatory sweating on palmar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: An otherwise successfully performed endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) to treat palmar hyperhidrosis (PH) often has a serious side effect: compensatory sweating (CS). This side effect occurs in other parts of the body to a disturbing extent. The objective of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between the level of ETS performed on patients with PH, and the occurrence and severity of postoperational CS. METHODS: Between January 2014 and January 2015, ETS procedures were performed on 25 randomly selected consecutive subjects (group A) at T2 level, and on …

Effects of clarithromycin, azithromycin and rifampicin on terbutaline-induced sweating in foals.

BACKGROUND: Erythromycin (ERY) induces anhidrosis in foals. Azithromycin (AZI) and clarithromycin (CLA), often combined with rifampicin (RIF), are commonly used to treat Rhodococcus equi infections, but effects on sweating have not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of AZI, CLA and RIF on sweat responses in normal foals. STUDY DESIGN: Each experiment was a blinded, duplicated, six foal × three period counterbalanced within subjects design (12 foals/experiment). METHODS: Antimicrobials were given orally for 5 days. In Experiment 1, ERY, AZI and CLA were given. In Experime…

Menopausal hot flushes and night sweats: where are we now?

OBJECTIVE: An overview of the current knowledge on the etiology and treatment of vasomotor symptoms in postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acknowledged experts in the field contributed a brief assessment of their areas of interest which were combined and edited into the final manuscript. RESULTS: Women around the world experience vasomotor symptoms as they enter and complete the menopause transition. Vasomotor symptoms, specifically hot flushes, are caused by a narrowing of the thermoneutral zone in the brain. This effect, although related to estrogen withdrawal, is most likely rela

[Case of Parkinson disease with heat retention due to sweating dysfunction].

A 71-year-old man was diagnosed as Parkinson disease at age 59, and levodopa therapy was started. Eleven years after the beginning of treatment, he noticed high fever (38.0 degrees C-39.0 degrees C) in July, but hyperthermia spontaneously disappeared three months later. In early July of the following year, he was re-admitted to our hospital because of continuous high fever, despite no any inflammation. Neurological examination revealed flexion posture of trunk and limbs and short step gait. He also presented limb rigidity, akinesia, and resting tremor during off period. Routine laboratory exam

Thermometry and calorimetry assessment of sweat response during exercise in the heat.

Our objective was to characterise sweat rate responses in a hot environment during rest and subsequent increasing levels of exercise in relation to thermometrically (i.e., rectal, tympanic, mean skin and mean body temperatures) and calorimetrically derived (i.e., change in body heat storage) thermal parameters. Ten healthy males volunteered and entered an environmental chamber set at 42 degrees C. Participants rested seated during their first hour inside the chamber. Thereafter, they exercised to volitional exhaustion on a cycle ergometer at 20 W with step increments of 20 W h(-1). Across time…

A case of multiple epitrichial sweat gland ductal carcinomas in a horse.

This case report describes a rare epitrichial sweat gland ductal carcinoma in a 14-year-old horse and is the first report of multiple carcinomas of this type in horses. Although several tumours developed, mostly on the distal extremities, over a 2-year period, the horse remained otherwise healthy. Topical treatment with imiquimod was successful for many of them.

The use of botulinum toxins to treat hyperhidrosis and gustatory sweating syndrome.

Hyperhidrosis is a chronic condition characterized by excessive sweating. Recent studies report that it affects approximately 2.8% of the population and typically begins during adolescence. Gustatory sweating usually occurs after parotid gland injury or surgery, and both disorders can be debilitating for those who are affected. Both diseases respond very well to botulinum toxin therapy and this article will review the use of botulinum toxins, including the serotypes used, dosing, and complications.

Are patients better than the laboratory in assessing sweating? Validation study.

BACKGROUND: Primary focal hyperhidrosis is a hereditary condition characterized by excessive sweating affecting a variety of areas, including the palms. In most cases, the decision to treat a patient is based only on the patient's own description of the symptoms because laboratory tests have not been established in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: To validate a subjective self-assessment scale for sweating in comparison with an objective method of quantifying evaporation from the skin surface. METHODS: We studied palmar sweating in 20 patients with primary focal hyperhidrosis and 20 age- and ge…

Evidence for metaboreceptor stimulation of sweating in normothermic and heat-stressed humans.

1. Isometric handgrip (IHG) exercise increases sweat rate and arterial blood pressure, and both remain elevated during post-exercise ischaemia. The purpose of this study was to identify whether the elevation in arterial blood pressure during post-exercise ischaemia contributes to the increase in sweating. 2. In normothermia and during whole-body heating, 2 min IHG exercise at 40% maximal voluntary contraction, followed by 2 min post-exercise ischaemia, was performed with and without bolus intravenous administration of sodium nitroprusside during the ischaemic period. Sodium nitroprusside was a…

Mechanisms underlying the age-related decrement in the human sweating response.

To examine the mechanisms underlying the age-related decrement in the ability to sweat, seven older (64-76 years) and seven younger (20-24 years) men participated in a 60-min sweating test. The test consisted of placing the subject's lower legs in a water bath at 42 degrees C while sitting in a controlled environment of 35 degrees C ambient temperature and 45% relative humidity. The rectal (Trc) and skin temperatures, local sweating rates (m(sw): on the forehead, chest, back, forearm and thigh) and the frequency of sweat expulsion (f(sw)) were measured during the test. No group difference was …

Modified ventilated capsule for the measurement of sweating rate in the exercising horse.

Modification of a ventilated capsule technique for the measurement of sweating rate (SR) is described for application in an exercising horse. The plastic capsule was sealed against the coat of the horse. Dry air was blown through the capsule over the skin and the change in absolute humidity (g/m3) between air entering and leaving the capsule was used to calculate SR. The effect of flow rate on the response characteristics of the system was investigated and measured over a range of sweating rates in a group of horses completing a short exercise test. Repeatability of SR measurements made at 2 s…

A case of periodic sweating associated with a subarachnoid cyst and multifocal dystonia.

A case of periodic sweating with multifocal dystonia is reported in a 60-year-old woman. At the age of 48 years, she presented with involuntary twisting of the lower face on the right. Six months later she noticed similar movements in the head and right arm. Four years later she began having attacks of generalized sweating over the whole face, anterior region of the trunk and both arms. The attacks occurred hourly each and every day. They lasted for about 10 min and were followed by voluntary urinary voiding. The biochemical and laboratory investigations showed no abnormalities except for the …
